For 1999, I would like to find as much information about the Hunt's of Hardeman County that I can. Specifically where there land was, transcribe the old cemetery at the Hunt House ( if I can get past the big Dog's lol) and learn more about the lives of my ancestors. the following is what I know. Wilkins Jones Hunt and his brother John Hunt, both moved to Hardeman County between 1824 and 1830. Both acquired land of around 1000 acres each, just north of grand junction ( I believe). Please help me and read the following carefully. It's confusing but is a very big missing piece of my puzzle... and I believe it could relate to others in Hardeman county as well. There father was Thomas Hunt of Sussex Va., his wife was Dorothy. John Hunt lost his family to a fever there except for one daughter. He remarried and raised a family in Hardeman county. His Daughter that survived the fever later mothered Lucy Pickins, civil war buffs might recognize that name. She was married to the governor who fired the shot heard around the world, to start the civil war. She was also pictured on the confederate 1 and 100 dollar bills. just tidbit info for interest. John Hunt named a son John Wilkins Hunt, assuming after his brother. John W Hunt built the Hunt home that still stands in Hardeman county, if any of you are familiar with it. I have seen the home from the driveway and it is wonderful to think that years ago my relatives built and lived there. I am going to try and get a tour of the home if I can locate the owner. Knocking on the door was out of the question...the dogs are bigger than I am. :) I also know that John Hunt's descendents sold there land to the Ames Plantation, but do not know what the boundaries were..still researching that. Wilkins Jones Hunt ( my direct ancestor) has proved to be more difficult to learn about than John. He had 2 sons and 3 daughters.. William, Avery, Mary, Virginia, and Lucy. Here is the part that gets confusing. 4 of these children married children of William Dickins. William Dickins was the brother of Samuel Dickins. So who is Samuel Dickins, well he was a land prospector in west Tennessee. both William and Samuel lived in north Madison County, bout 60 miles north of Grand Junction. How did these families meet? I asked myself that question, and then came up with a little theory.. yes it gets worse..lol Samuel Dickins was partners with a man by the name of Thomas Hunt (not Wilkins' and John's father) This Thomas is from another line of Hunt's that I am trying to tie my line into. So Samuel and Thomas hired Thomas' nephew Memucan Hunt Howard to survey thelands they acquired. Maybe Memucan new John and Wilkins and maybe that's how William Dickins' children met Wilkins' children? All of Wilkins' children left Hardeman and moved to Madison County. There appears to be one other child of Wilkins, Lucy Hunt named after her mother. she appears in records of guardianship for William Hunt her brother, but disappears. I also have no Idea what happened to Wilkins wife Lucy, she is mentioned in some Dickins family papers as the mother of the 4 Hunt children, but have no idea where she is. The information may help others in learning how the land was settled, if your ancestors came from Sussea Co Va, then maybe the families new each other, or even travled together to Hardeman Co. I really believe that the Memucan Hunt Howard is my key, many of you will find his name on deed's of your ancestors. I have a copy of a power of attorney for Memucan to act on behalf of Thomas Hunt. In later years Memucan partnered with Samuel alone. Yes this is long, but if u made it this far, congratulations :)) I don't post often, so when I do, I get carried away. I have some dates if anyone is interested in them. But wanted to give a broad overview of the family to see if it would jog someones memory. Maybe you have run across that little piece of paper that I need to put it all together. I hope so. :) If anyone can provide any information on any of the Hunts, I would be most grateful. I am also willing to share if anyone is interested. If you see a Hunt in your research, please pass it along to me.
