My gg grandfather was Abijah Books "Ab" Crain, b. 3-14-1817, White Co., TN and d. 12-3-1895 at/near Toone in Hardeman County. Abijah Brook and his wife Ellender "Ellen" "Nellie" Cosby/Cozby were buried in the Caddell Cemetery SE of Toone (NE of Bolivar) in Hardeman Co., TN. Caddell Cemetery is a VERY remote cemetery no longer accessible by road. There are not many tombstones in this secluded cemetery--and most tombstones are barely readable. The tombstones indicated that the first burial was in 1856--Martha A. E. Crain, daughter of Abijah and Ellender Crain. The last interrment was in 1939. When I visited this cemetery in 1990, I had to walk from Walton Road about a mile across a field of soybeans to get to the cemetery which was not visable from Walton Road. The pictures made of the tombstones for Abijah, Ellender, and three of their children are not legible. At the cemetery the stones could identifed only by finger tracing and comparing with information copied from Vol. III of "Hardeman County Cemeteries." At this time the informtion copied from the cemetery book about the people buried in this cemetery, is in a very safe place (which I cannot find.) If ever we get to visit TN again, I will come prepared with water/mirror/chalk/mud to enhance the stones, so that the inscriptions will be readable. According to "Ten Sons of Oliver" by Solon P. and Margaret Starr Crain, Abijah's tombstone had these words inscribed on it: "He was a ... ... Baptist Missionary Christian, Son of Stephen, Grandson of Joel. From Joel and William Crain sprang the Crain family of this county." There have been many Abijah Crains--I have 10 in my database. Many of the sons of Joel Crain lived in Hardeman Co., TN. Perhaps that they felt it to be their personal responsibility to keep the clerks in the courthouse busy recording the deeds of their numerous land purchases and sales.
