I don't know anything about the Texas Land Company, but do know where Tennessee Colony is in East Texas (I live in Texas). I know that someone named GREENBERRY CARTER of Hardeman County had descendants who ended up at Tennessee Colony, tho I think it was maybe in the early 1900s. I've been trying to figure out for a long while if this GREENBERRY CARTER is the G.B. CARTER who was 2nd bondsman on my JAMES CARTER's marriage record in Hardeman Co. in 1836. There was a JESSE CARTER in Hardeman County (wife LUCY STOKER / STOKES) who had a son GREENBERRY CARTER b.abt.1798-1800 or so. GREENBERRY CARTER married NANCY CREWS in Hardeman Co., and they went to Tippah County MS about the same time as my JAMES CARTER did. My JAMES CARTER went to Texas in 1851, and GREENBERRY CARTER went to Tishomingo Co. MS (tho I don't recall what year). ----- Original Message ----- From: "Georgia McKenzie Ellison" <georgia@theellisons.net> To: <TNHARDEM-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 29, 2003 12:25 PM Subject: [TNHARDEM] Texas Land Co. > I had never heard of the Texas Land Co. before, but find it very interesting. One of my ancestors, Carter Tarrant McKenzie, was in the 1830 census in Hardeman County. In 1835 there were land certificates recorded for him in Texas in an area today known as Tennessee Colony. I understand that Tennessee Colony was thus named because it was settled by so many people from TN. Another Hardeman Co family that went with McKenzie was Whittaker. > > If anyone knows more about the Texas Land Co., I would appreciate you sharing it. >
Hi Y'all, I have quite a bit more on the land company I will post if anyone is interested. I have a list of several families that were or probably were in the group. I am not sure what I have ready to send and what I may need to scan but let me know if your interested and I will see what I can pull together.
