Good Evening Everyone, The following is information that I have on Arthur Fulghum, son of Raiford and Winneford (Pierce) Fulghum. This information is as follows: Arthur Fulghum was born June 14, 1768, in Wayne County, North Carolina, and died November 30, 1845, in Nacogdoches County, Texas, near the present day town of Lufkin. He married Alice McKinnie, the daughter of William McKinnie Jr. and Mary Jernigan, sometime prior to 1801. Alice was born September 10, 1770, and died February 8, 1852, in Nacogdoches County, Texas. Arthur and Alice had the following 9 children: A. William McKinnie Wilson Fulghum B. Adeline M. Fulghum was born about 1822 and died after 1880. She married Ambrose H. Crain January 29, 1846. C. Susan Fulghum was born about 1804 and married John N. Jenkins on September 5, 1826. D. Pierce Fulghum was born about 1806 and died July 16, 1859. He married Hester A. Hines, March 3, 1832. Their children were: 1.) Mary, who was born in Tennessee about 1833. 2.) James A., who was born in Tennessee September 4, 1835. 3.) Amanda, who was born in Tennessee about 1839. E. Raiford Frank Fulghum was born about 1807 and he married Susan Craig November 22, 1836. She died in about 1840. They had the following child: 1.) Mary Jane, who was born February 29, 1840, in Hardeman County, Tennessee. Mary Jane married James Madison Weatherly, son of John Parker and Lucinda Parmley Weatherly, on December 29, 1859. James died February 11, 1863, while a POW in Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio, during the Civil War. Mary and James had two children: ----Emma A., who was born November 1, 1860, died April 29, 1861. ----John Edward, was born February 11, 1862. (At the death of her husband James, Mary Jane married Rufus F. Emmons, in Nacogdoches, Texas, January 3, 1867. Mary and Rufus had no children.) ***Raiford Frank Fulghum, following the death of wife Susan Craig, married Patience A. Crain January 29, 1846. They had the following 4 children: 1.) Susan E., was born about 1848 in Texas. She married Jerry G. Higgs on January 3, 1868, in Nacogdoches County, Texas (they were married by Methodist Preacher D. W. Ross). 2.) Jesse, was born in about 1852, in Texas. 3.) Ataway, was born about 1861 in Texas. 4.) Desria, was born about 1866, in Texas. F. Charlotte Fulghum was born about 1808 and died December 10, 1843. She was married to Robert O. Hooks on March 16, 1828. G. Richard Fulghum died September 8, 1841. H. Caroline Fulghum married Giles B. Crain on February 15, 1832. I. Julia Fulghum was born in about 1829 and died about 1883. She married Oscar Engledow on April 27, 1843. Arthur Fulghum and his brother Theophilus, in 1797, joined some members of the Williamson Family and migrated to Tennessee where they established Williamson County. Some years later, Arthur moved on to Hardeman County, Tennessee, with brother Benjamin Fulghum and some of the McKinnie line. In about 1839, Arthur moved his family to Nacogdoches County, Republic of Texas, where he was most probably the first in our family to settle there. With Arthur were his wife, Alice, and children Pearch, Raiford Charlotte, Adeline M., and Julia. Son William McKinnie Wilson Fulghum remained in Tennessee. Upon arriving in the Republic of Texas, on April 19, 1839, Arthur applied for a conditional class 3 lendright of 640 acres. After completing the three year residency requirement, he received the unconditional certificate on October 3, 1842. (Personal Note: I obtained a copy of the original land grant of 640 to Arthur from the Texas Land Office in Austin. The location of the gran! t was in the outskirts of present day Lufkin, Texas, on what was then Peach Creek.) Arthur died on November 30, 1845. (December 18, 1846, was the date of inventory of his estate.) Arthur's daughter,Adeline Fulghum Crain wrote a letter to her brother William in Tennessee, dated February 8, 1852. The letter stated "Mother died 1:45PM, February 8, 182 from a disease of the liver, having been in bed for 3 months...gave Pierce and Rayford her land of 200 acres...corn worth $l.00 to $1.50 per bushel, pork worth 8 cents per pound." In the letter to William, she also mentioned she had just given birth to daughter Julia Adeline on December 12, 1851. Hello Everyone, Tonight I am posting on William McKinnie Wilson Fulghum, son of Arthur and Alice McKinnie Fulghum. #5 William McKinnie Wilson "Squire Billy" Fulghum was born February 14, 1801, in Wayne County, North Carolina, and died October 19, 1877, in Tennessee. He married Marcella Elizabeth Seat on March 13, 1828. Marcella died on a trip to visit William McKinnie Wilson Fulghum's relatives in Nacogdoches County, Texas, in 1852. William and Marcella had 12 children. They are as follows: A. Louise "Sis" Rebecca Fulghum was born May 26, 1828. She never married. B. Arthur "Gus" Augustus Fulghum was born January 26, 1831 and was married to his cousin, Sarah Jane Watkins, about 1856. (Note: We believe this is the Arthur Fulghum referenced in the book "Company Ayhtch".) Arthur's second wife was Valarie Wright Gilchrist. Civil War records indicate that Arthur was a private with Russell's 20th Tennessee Cavalry, CSA, Company D. Records indicate that while serving with the Second Division of Nathan Bedford Forrest's Cavalry, he was killed at the battle of Harrisburg, Mississippi, between July 13 and 15, 1864. C. Sophronia "Phrona" Adline Fulghum was born June 9, 1833. She married Benjamin Lewis and the two had four sons. D. Emmerson "Em" or "Emory" Raiford Fulghum was born December 2, 1834. He married Elie Hamilton in 1861. "Emery" and Elie had four children, including a son named Tobe. Civil War records indicate that :"Emery" enlisted in the 47th Tennessee Infantry, Company F, CSA, November 30, 1861. He was listed as wounded at Shiloh and was allowed to travel home to recover from wounds. "Emery" returned to his unit and was captured along with brother, Julius E. Fulghum, on November 25, 1863, at the Battle of Missionary Ridge. "Emery" and Julius spent 18 months in Rock Island POW camp in Rock Island, Illinois. (Note: This POW camp was termed the Andersonville of the North.) E. William "Billy" Richard Fulghum was born May 29, 1836, and was married to Susan Blackmore, daughter of James and Katherine (Rooker) Blackmore. Their union produced seven children, five boys and two girls (Maud and Kate). "Billy" had a second wife, his cousin, Sarah Fulghum. Civil War records indicate that "Billy" enlisted in the 47th Tennessee Infantry, Company F, CSA, on November 30, 1861. He was wounded and sent home at the Battle of Shiloh. "Billy" later lived in Dyer County, Tennessee, and was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. F. Julius "Shuke" Ebenezer Fulghum was born March 9, 1838, and was married to seventeen-year-old Nancy Ann Sharp on February 5, 1867. Nancy was the daughter of Henry Raiford and Mary (Chambers) Sharp of McNairy County, Tennessee. Civil War records indicate that Julius enlisted in Duckworth's 7th Tennessee Cavalry, Company A, CSA, on May 16, 1861. This was "Stonewall" Jackson's escort. Julius transfered to be with his brothers the next year. Records indicate he joined the 47th Tennessee Infantry, company F, on June 13, 1862. A pension application, dated December 13, 1896, indicates he once received a glancing blow of grapeshot on the left cheek. The pension and Civil War military records both indicate he was captured at Missionary Ridge and incarcerated at Rock Island POW Camp. Julius died January 19, 1917. G. Angeline Fulghum was born February 21, 1840. She never married. H. Mary Jane Idotha "Docia" Fulghum was born May 26, 1842, in Madison County, Tennessee, and was married to Sam Sharp on June 17, 1866. Sam Sharp was a Major in the 31st Tennessee Infantry and was later a prominent Banker in Corinth, Mississippi. An obituary in the Confederate Veteran Magazine indicated that Sam "...was an intimate friend of President Jefferson Davis." Sam was the brother of Julius Fulghum's wife, Nancy. Mary Idotha died July 15, 1921, at Corinth. Mary Idotha and Sam had 4 children, John, Ida Lue, Elmer Clinton and Willie R. I. Albert "Ab" Leonidas Fulghum was born February 10, 1844, and married Mollie Senter, on December 10, 1867. Civil War records indicate that Albert was a private in the 9th Tennessee Cavalry. He appears on the roll of prisons of war who were parolled at Gainesville, Alabama, May 10, 1865. Following the war, on April 30, 1895, Albert was killed along with John Fulghum in a shootout with Robert and Beaure Townsend. All four were killed as part of a feud between the two families. Albert and Mollie had eight children before his death. J. James Green was born August 3, 1846, and married Martha "Mat" Arnold December 16, 1873. Civil War records indicate that Green was a private in the 19th and 20th Tennessee Cavalry, Company E, CSA. He was on the roll of prisoners of war paroled at Gainesville, Alabama, May 11, 1865. Green's wife Martha died before 1880. He married his second wife, Nannie Arnold, on March 10, 1881. They had three children. James died January 30, 1926. K. Alice Virginia "Jennie" Fulghum was born on May 28, 1849, and married George Milton "Mitt" Kennan in 1869. They had no children. Alice died September 3, 1938. "Mitt," son of Michael Keenan and Permelia Hamilton, died April 26, 1926. Both are buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Humboldt, Tennessee. L. Marth "Matt" Wilson Fulghum was born January 15, 1852, and died unmarried March 22, 1939.
