    3. Jim, I checked the 1840 on Ancestry and the only Clark I see on stamped pg. 278 is a James CLARK with what looks like the initial "N". He has one male under 5, one 5-10, and one 30-40; one female under 5, one 5-10; and one 20-30. The index shows a John CLARK on pg. 5 and a John S. CLARK on pg. 94 in Hardeman Co. in 1840, but I can't find them on the actual census. I also checked the index for Peyton POWELL in 1840. There are 2 listed - one in Madison Co., AL on pg. 123 and one in Loudoun Co., VA on pg. 147 in the Jonah Hood township. Hope this helps you.
