I am researching the Pirtle and G. W. Black Families of Hardeman County.. My Grandmother was a Black before she married and moved to McNairy county. Her mother was a Pirtle. Most of the families lived north of Bolivar and around Toone and up to Vildo and over to Whiteville. I am also interested in the postal history of Hardeman County. I became interested in postal history from reading old letters. They are a window into the past. My grandmother and my grandfather exchanged love letters before they were married; she living in Vildo and he in Bethel Springs (McNairy County). Someday I hope to write a book on Postal history for Hardeman, McNairy, and Chester Counties. I collect copies or original letters "from" or "to" any place in Hardeman county (and also McNairy and Chester Counties). Currently I am working on a history of Buena Vista Methodist Church in McNairy County. The church is almost 150 years. I would welcome correspondence from anyone with interest in any of these areas. David Agnew P.S. Also interested in history of Agriculture, Education and churches in Hardeman, Chester and McNairy counties.
Hi Beverly; I'm just getting started so I'll let you know if there is, thank you. Charlotte
Hello Everyone, Tonight I am posting on William McKinnie Wilson Fulghum, son of Arthur and Alice McKinnie Fulghum. #5 William McKinnie Wilson "Squire Billy" Fulghum was born February 14, 1801, in Wayne County, North Carolina, and died October 19, 1877, in Tennessee. He married Marcella Elizabeth Seat on March 13, 1828. Marcella died on a trip to visit William McKinnie Wilson Fulghum's relatives in Nacogdoches County, Texas, in 1852. William and Marcella had 12 children. They are as follows: A. Louise "Sis" Rebecca Fulghum was born May 26, 1828. She never married. B. Arthur "Gus" Augustus Fulghum was born January 26, 1831 and was married to his cousin, Sarah Jane Watkins, about 1856. (Note: We believe this is the Arthur Fulghum referenced in the book "Company Ayhtch".) Arthur's second wife was Valarie Wright Gilchrist. Civil War records indicate that Arthur was a private with Russell's 20th Tennessee Cavalry, CSA, Company D. Records indicate that while serving with the Second Division of Nathan Bedford Forrest's Cavalry, he was killed at the battle of Harrisburg, Mississippi, between July 13 and 15, 1864. C. Sophronia "Phrona" Adline Fulghum was born June 9, 1833. She married Benjamin Lewis and the two had four sons. D. Emmerson "Em" or "Emory" Raiford Fulghum was born December 2, 1834. He married Elie Hamilton in 1861. "Emery" and Elie had four children, including a son named Tobe. Civil War records indicate that :"Emery" enlisted in the 47th Tennessee Infantry, Company F, CSA, November 30, 1861. He was listed as wounded at Shiloh and was allowed to travel home to recover from wounds. "Emery" returned to his unit and was captured along with brother, Julius E. Fulghum, on November 25, 1863, at the Battle of Missionary Ridge. "Emery" and Julius spent 18 months in Rock Island POW camp in Rock Island, Illinois. (Note: This POW camp was termed the Andersonville of the North.) E. William "Billy" Richard Fulghum was born May 29, 1836, and was married to Susan Blackmore, daughter of James and Katherine (Rooker) Blackmore. Their union produced seven children, five boys and two girls (Maud and Kate). "Billy" had a second wife, his cousin, Sarah Fulghum. Civil War records indicate that "Billy" enlisted in the 47th Tennessee Infantry, Company F, CSA, on November 30, 1861. He was wounded and sent home at the Battle of Shiloh. "Billy" later lived in Dyer County, Tennessee, and was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. F. Julius "Shuke" Ebenezer Fulghum was born March 9, 1838, and was married to seventeen-year-old Nancy Ann Sharp on February 5, 1867. Nancy was the daughter of Henry Raiford and Mary (Chambers) Sharp of McNairy County, Tennessee. Civil War records indicate that Julius enlisted in Duckworth's 7th Tennessee Cavalry, Company A, CSA, on May 16, 1861. This was "Stonewall" Jackson's escort. Julius transfered to be with his brothers the next year. Records indicate he joined the 47th Tennessee Infantry, company F, on June 13, 1862. A pension application, dated December 13, 1896, indicates he once received a glancing blow of grapeshot on the left cheek. The pension and Civil War military records both indicate he was captured at Missionary Ridge and incarcerated at Rock Island POW Camp. Julius died January 19, 1917. G. Angeline Fulghum was born February 21, 1840. She never married. H. Mary Jane Idotha "Docia" Fulghum was born May 26, 1842, in Madison County, Tennessee, and was married to Sam Sharp on June 17, 1866. Sam Sharp was a Major in the 31st Tennessee Infantry and was later a prominent Banker in Corinth, Mississippi. An obituary in the Confederate Veteran Magazine indicated that Sam "...was an intimate friend of President Jefferson Davis." Sam was the brother of Julius Fulghum's wife, Nancy. Mary Idotha died July 15, 1921, at Corinth. Mary Idotha and Sam had 4 children, John, Ida Lue, Elmer Clinton and Willie R. I. Albert "Ab" Leonidas Fulghum was born February 10, 1844, and married Mollie Senter, on December 10, 1867. Civil War records indicate that Albert was a private in the 9th Tennessee Cavalry. He appears on the roll of prisons of war who were parolled at Gainesville, Alabama, May 10, 1865. Following the war, on April 30, 1895, Albert was killed along with John Fulghum in a shootout with Robert and Beaure Townsend. All four were killed as part of a feud between the two families. Albert and Mollie had eight children before his death. J. James Green was born August 3, 1846, and married Martha "Mat" Arnold December 16, 1873. Civil War records indicate that Green was a private in the 19th and 20th Tennessee Cavalry, Company E, CSA. He was on the roll of prisoners of war paroled at Gainesville, Alabama, May 11, 1865. Green's wife Martha died before 1880. He married his second wife, Nannie Arnold, on March 10, 1881. They had three children. James died January 30, 1926. K. Arthur Fulghum and his brother Theophilus, in 1797, joined some members of the Williamson Family and migrated to Tennessee where they established Williamson County. Some years later, Arthur moved on to Hardeman County, Tennessee, with brother Benjamin Fulghum and some of the McKinnie line. In about 1839, Arthur moved his family to Nacogdoches County, Republic of Texas, where he was most probably the first in our family to settle there. With Arthur were his wife, Alice, and children Pearch, Raiford Charlotte, Adeline M., and Julia. Son William McKinnie Wilson Fulghum remained in Tennessee. Upon arriving in the Republic of Texas, on April 19, 1839, Arthur applied for a conditional class 3 lendright of 640 acres. Hello Everyone, My name is Dan Fulghum. I live just north of Houston, Texas. I'm researching the Fulghum and McKinnie families, primarily in the early to mid 1800s. My Great-Great-Great-Grandfather was Arthur Fulghum, who moved to Hardeman County after leaving Wayne County, North Carolina, and spending some time in Williamson County. He later was the first Fulghum to settle in the Republic of Texas (circa 1839). My Great-Great-Grandfather, William McKinnie Wilson Fulghum, and my Great-Grandfather, Julius Ebenezer Fulghum, were born in Hardeman County. Julius later moved to Gibson County, Tennessee. We are also related to the Sharps of McNairy County, Tennessee, and Corinth, Alcorn County, Mississippi. Through our Sharp line, we are also related to the McKee and Chambers families of McNairy County, Tennessee.
