I have seen that the area that James and Levi moved to in San Augustine Co, was also known as the "Tennessee Colony". I was looking for a Caroline Crawford who married a R. A. Coburn in Hardeman County
Hi Bob, I was asking about Caroline Crawford who married Robert A. Coburn in Hardeman County.......He was born about 1849 in Stewart County and was in Hardeman County in 1860, the oldest son of William J. Coburn. There could be a connection there. I don't remember the date but I have seen a record of Caroline Crawford who married R. A. Coburn in Hardeman County. I think he may have moved to Texas after that and we have not been able to find any of his descendants so far. I have a picture of Buddy Crawford that was in my grandmother's things and it was taken about 1924 in Arizona. Thanks for any ideas you may have. Char
Hi, I'm researching some of the same names that you are. Chisum/Chism, Lewis, and Robinson. These are the surnames of my ancestors from Hardeman County. My ancestors were African-American and slaves in Hardeman County, except maybe the Chisum/Chism's they were of Native-American (Creek descent). The Chism's were from the area near Toone. I believe the Lewis's were also. I know that some of the Lewis',Chisms', and Robinson's were slave owners. Do you have any info on that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hi, Char, My great-grandmother's married name was Matilda Caroline Crawford. Her maiden name was Solomon. She lived in Hardeman County from her marriage to Robert Raiford Crawford in 1867 until her death in 1930. Could she be the one you are asking about? Bob
Thanks Georgia Saved me lots of work going thru my notebooks))) btw, My Sarah Grogan was in that group but did not receive land . She was obviously traveling with some family in that group very possibly the Baker's. But have found no hard evidence that she was related to any one of them. Her presence there was documented in testimony in a land dispute case concerning her oldest child's inheritance of her father's land . My Sally was married to Fredrick Roe, Sept of 1831, released from marriage bond after about 3-6 months Roe was paid by Wm Sowell a gallon of whiskey and a plug of tobacco to release her. She moved in with Wm and his father and mother where they lived as man and wife for over a year before being married by bond in the summer of 1834 their infant daughter Rachel attended the ceremony. William got into a dispute in the fall of 1834 with Spencer Morris who was also in the Tn Group. Morris cut his throat . My Sally married my ancestor Elijah Tate in Feb of 1835. Sally was pregnant with my gg-greatfather during the Texas Revolution and was in the Run away Scrape in the spring of 1836. She subsequently married the 4th time after Elijah's death or departure David Houmard in the fall of 1850. Earlier that year she was living with the John Baker family next door to Blackstone Hardiman's hh. She married for the last time in 1855 to Charles Thomas by whom she had her youngest child Ellen. Her children by Elijah were James Lewis (1836), William (1838) and Elizabeth (Lizze, 1842)). Some early letters suggested that she was Indian but I have not found any proof of that. I have not found a likely Grogan family in Tn that early (1813) . There was a Spencer Grogan in West Tn during the War of 1812 period but he moved on to Missouri long before Sally went to TX. Almeron and Susannah Dickerson were in that Tennessee group ( for those of you not familiar with Tx history) Susannah was the only Anglo woman left in the Alamo when it fell, her husband was killed there with other DeWitt Settlers who went to the aid of the men trapped there. Susannah witnessed the annulment of Sally's marriage to Fredrick Roe, well I am running on sorry, lot's of history in this group. One of his answers to this dilemma was to send his agent, William A. Matthews to Bolivar, Hardeman County, Tennessee to contract for 20 families to move to Texas and settle in the DeWitt colony. He drew up a contract with Alexander, Brock and the McKean brothers to recruit the 20 families. Only 17 families were contracted for, and Matthews accompanied the group on their "long, hard overland trip" and saw to their needs, supplies, land procurement and proper titles to their lands. The responsibility of the Bolivar group was to finance the move. All members of the Bolivar contractors were to receive land for their services. Joseph McKean never left Tennessee. Probably the other three accompanied the move to Texas, but John C. McKean witnessed to the appeals court that Brock, Alexander and Joseph McKean never completed their contract requirements. John C. McKean was active in the colony and added to his land holdings from time to time. The families named above have been confirmed as having been members of the Tennessee-Texas Land Company. I KNOW THAT MY SARAH EMILY GREEN WILSON WAS LIVING IN FLORENCE, ALA IN 1880. THEY MUST HAVE BEEN LIVING IN HARDEMAN COUNTY A YEAR EARLIER SINCE THEY HAVE A SON, WESLEY GREEN WILSON, BURIED EAST OF HICKORY VALLEY IN MARCH 1879. THEY WERE BACK IN HARDEMAN COUNTY BEFORE 1900. Susan, My Great-Great-Great Grandfather Arthur Fulghum's brother Theophilus (living in Williamson) sued Arthur's sons Pierce and Raiford over the estate of his sister Apsilla. In this suit, a copy of which was found in the Nacogdoches County, Texas, court records recently, there was a listing of the Fulghum and collateral family lines along with their locations. William McKinnie Wilson Fulghum (my Great-Great-Grandfather) was listed in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, at that time (early 1850s). Therefore, I would surmise your Fulghums are relatives. Send me a post with the names of your Fulghum's in Oktibbeha and Webster Counties at that time. I will check my database and that of the FFFNA to determine relationship. NOTE: My families' last name is Fulghum and there was another family line spelled Fulgham in Mississippi. Both of these lines came to the Republic of Texas in 1839 and 1840. Recently, through FamilyTreeDNA, I was able to conclusively prove the two blood lines are descended from Captain Anthony Fulgham of the Isle of Wight County, Virginia (circa 1640), our most recent documented common ancestor. My Fulghum line from Captain Anthony Fulgham's son Michael and the Fulgham line through Anthony's son John. Check the spelling of the last name and then give me the full names so I can check their lineages. This might help you in tracing your Fulghum/Fulgham ancestors. Hello everyone!! It is great to have so much activity!!! I am Helen, live in TN -- have been researching in Hardeman Co for awhile!!!! My main Surname is JORDAN -- and connected families which include: Roach Pirtle Mullins/Mullen Weaver deShazo Anderson Yarbrough Willoughby Robinson Overton Thornton Chisum Horm(e)sby Lewis Green(e) Hawk Pirtle Lambert This is quite a few surnames, but they are all married and/or are related in some form or fashion to my Jordan...(even though you may not expect your surname to have any relationship-- you may be surprised) ......most stayed in Hardeman Co, some drifted to Madison Co,(and probably other counties, as well) some went to Texas -- some stayed in Texas, others returned... ...some landed in OK and others -- Well, I'm still searching for their destination!!! I have pictures of gravestones -- mostly Vernon Cemetery and Maple Springs -- but not limited to those two. Also, some obits from the 1950's - 1980's.... If you have any of these surnames in Hardeman Co -- please let me know!!! Maybe we can prove kinship! Also, interested in the Texas Land Company......do you know which county in Texas they were in??? Helen in Middle TN
