    1. [TNHARDEM-L] JONES and a house fire in Hardeman Co.
    2. Nancy Harwood
    3. I'm combining a history and genealogy question here. I am looking for any information on a family named JONES whose house in Hardeman County was burned down during or shortly after the Civil War. My great-grandfather, John T. JONES, supposedly born in Hardeman Co. in 1859, came to Texas as a young boy with a family named ARMSTRONG who may or may not have been blood relatives (probably not). The man's name was William and the woman was called Puss. John T. told one of his sons that his family had been killed in a house fire "because of all the bitterness about the war." I would like to see if this family legend is true, and, if so, who the family members were who were killed. John T. was back in Hardeman County by the 1880 census, living with a McCLENDON family -- in December of that year he married Martha Elizabeth MCGLOTHLIN, step-daughter of George T. MCCLENDON. I'm also looking for information on an Ollie JONES who was a member of the 12th/22nd TN Infantry -- I saw his name listed in a Bolivar/Hardeman County newspaper c1885 as a member of this unit from Hardeman County. I am interested in him because my grandfather, son of John T. and Elizabeth, was named Lee Ollie Lafayette JONES -- I think this Ollie may have been a relative. Thanks, Nancy Harwood Houston, TX

    3. Hardeman county does have a good library and helpful people. I don't know their hours. A Mrs. Cheshier was very helpful to me the last time I stopped. I lived in Bolivar many years ago and I had relatives from the county. A book was published about 20 years ago on the history of the county. It has many family histories. It would be good to review the book before you get there if you can find one. The Bolivar newspapers have been indexed by Cox and others..... There are a couple of good collections there but as I recall the finding aids are brief. I have not spent much time in the library so I don't know much about the depth of resources. Bolivar is a small but very nice historic looking town. lot of good history, old homes and nice folks. I am from McNairy county, which as someone else has already pointed out, is down the road about 30 miles--east. They have some good references on the Hardeman county. Also Madison county library in Jackson has some good resources that MIGHT be worth some time. You might also like to know that there are several good historical sources of information on the county at several major archives. If you get a chance and have access you might do a search for Hardeman county on a data base called First Search. Some interesting things will pop up. One major collect is related to Jones which I noticed you listed in you list of names you are researching. Wish I was going to Hardeman county :) David In Jonesboro Arkansas It has At 07:50 AM 5/13/98 -0500, you wrote: >Susie --- We were in Hardeman several years ago & I believe there is a Lib >in Bolivar. 3. Hello Barbara, Hopefully I will find some Hardeman county books to bring home. I have checked the ones I have now and could not find anything on your specific ones. I do see an article from 1 June 1867 death of Caroline R. MCMAHON , in Memphis , wife of Col. John H. MCMAHON. That's all I found. I also have a roll of microfilm on early county records, if you will remind me in a few weeks. We are planning a busy week in TN. and also expecting a new grandchild before the end of the month so I will not promise to look at the film before then. Thanks for the reply. Happy Hunting Susie
