In answer to questions about Harde-Facts: (pronounced like 'artifacts' with an 'h') It is a very small newsletter (9 pages) printed quarterly [Jan, Apr, Jul, Oct] from 1984 to 1998 with the exception of 1992 and 1997 when no issues were printed. It is NOT indexed, and contains miscellaneous information about Hardeman County history and genealogy, with emphasis on previously unpublished/unprinted material. I do not solicit subscriptions, in fact will not take them at this time. [I do not know whether I will be able to compile it in 1999]. Some of the libraries/archives which have been sent copies from the beginning are: NSDAR Library, Washington DC Allen Co Public Library, Fort Wayne IN Samford Univ. Library, Birmingham AL TN Gen Society Library Brunswick TN Family History Library, Salt Lake City UT TN State Library, Nashville TN Hardeman Co Library, Bolivar TN Briefly, some of the topics have been : marriages from 1861 [beginning after Mr. Quinnie Armour's WPA copied marriages which have been published] to 1890 [in the Jul-98]; abstracts of things like some of the will books, deed books, & John Houston Bill's diary; early land entries; some tax records; some family history tid-bits [no indepth lineages]; registration of voters for 1865; some muster rolls; some bible and cemetery records; etc. Some of this information is of course on microfilm and may be obtained from TN State Archives. Since these twelve years of hodge-podge have not been indexed, finding 'a' name is very time consuming so I cannot offer that service. If I were to be asked for advise of someone starting a newsletter, it would be to index as you go along to save time for your reader and yourself. pat vincent-<[email protected]>

Want to talk with genealogists in other parts of the world? Well, guess what? You can! Internet Relay Chat (IRC) allows you to communicate instantly with other users. When you are talking in IRC, everything you type will instantly be transmitted around the world to other users who have also connected to the IRC server. They can then type something and RESPOND to your messages-and vice versa. I should warn you that the program can be very addictive once you begin to make friends and contacts on IRC, especially when you learn how to say "cousin" in 14 languages. RootsWeb IRC has a wide variety of channels open during the week, from USGenWeb State meetings to our new live IRC Server chat in Australia. The RootsWeb IRC Server also hosts the IIGS IRC Channels which include the regularly scheduled discussions of topics such as military records and researching in specific localities: United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and Germany. If you are familiar with IRC, but not RootsWeb's IRC, you need only add irc.rootsweb.com to your list of servers. (We run on the standard port of 6667.) If you would like to try IRC, but do not yet have software, you can obtain lists of IRC client software at various search engines all over the net (<http://www.yahoo.com>, etc.). After all the research Bill did to write his story, he is still dumb-struck that this kind of thing is "legal". He also realizes that it is not an isolated incident. NOTE: As of 8/24/98, the "Death of a Cemetery" story is still on-line at: http://www.starnews.com/news/citystate/98/aug/0822SN_rhoads.html Bill says he has heard today from dozens of people about the story and was shocked to learn what a firestorm it sparked here on the Internet. He has even heard from descendants of the Foltz family formerly buried in Rhoads Cemetery who are absolutely outraged about this situation! They feel they should have been notified that Duke Realty was going to do this so they could have relocated their family members. Duke alleges that it did all that was legally necessary to try to find living descendants -- they published a tiny notice in the legal classifieds. Bill brought up something really important and asked me to emphasize it to all of you. If the present status of Indiana law disturbs you, write a letter or send an e-mail TODAY to the Editor of the Indianapolis Star/News. The address is: Editor Indianapolis Star/News P.O. Box 145 Indianapolis, Indiana 46206-0145 E-mail: [email protected] When you write to the Star, be sure to include your mailing address and telephone number or else they will not publish your letter. (Your address will not, however, be published; it is used only for verification purposes.) If the Star publishes enough letters in response to this situation, then public outrage will surely catch the eye (and hopefully the hearts) of some of our Legislators. (Unfortunately, Bill Shaw does not have e-mail, but you can write to him in care of the Star at the snail-mail address above.) Also, invest a few 32-cent stamps and mail letters to your State Legislators today. Make a little noise and let them know that the law MUST be changed. If you forwarded any of the previous messages about the Indianapolis Star article to other groups or friends, send them a copy of this message as well. Be sure to regularly visit the Indiana Pioneer Cemeteries Restoration Project website at: http://www.np.huntington.in.us/inpcrp/ for updates on this situation. Thank you for your concern.
