The names are not familiar and I do not find the marriage for J. Powell and M. Wilkinson in the HC Marriage Records----; the marriage for slaves and free blacks were not recorded here at that time. I know that a lot of Cantrells lived in middle TN and there has been a book published on the Shearin family by a Cantrell. It just might have something in it about Mary. I think Mr. Cantrell was advertising his book on GenForum --Shearin pages---a few years ago probably, you might get in touch with him to see if he has anything in his book about your Mary. Good luck. pat vincent

Wilkinson and Mary Cantrell were my ancestors. He was b. 1815 and she was b. 1817 both in Spartanburg Co. SC They married in TN 1835. He drowned-county unknown leaving Mary with 4 sons and one daughter-all under 11 years of age. In abt. 1849 she married Jonathan Powell (widower) who had children. They moved to Cape Girardeau, MO per the 1850 census. I have been trying for three years to find out more about George and his parents and siblings, and where he is buried. Thanks for the offer of help. Yesterday I sent for a copy of his will at the State Archives of TN-hopefully it is the same man. Marciel marcielhwood@cs.com

    2. Betty Clingman
    3. Hi list members, Some of my ancestors migrated from Halifax, Mecklenburg and Brunswick Counties in VA to Bolivar, Hardeman Co., TN about 1830. Part of that group moved on to Ellis Co., TX in the 1870's and others are buried in and near Bolivar. A cousin and I have been discussing the correct pronunciation of Hardeman. Is it two syllables as in "Harde-man", or is it three syllables as in Hard-e-man"? Thanks for the help. Two women who used to search for a fee are both having health problems. In about six months I might be able to help you a little----I have Wilkinsons, don't know of any Cantrells who were here, Powells were and are here. If you want to send me an outline of where you are in your research and who specifically you are looking for, I may have something----but am deep into a project right now, so I will not have time to do much. pat v.
