Martha E. Winstead Sept. 20, 1917 - July 29, 2002 Martha E. Winstead, 84, of South Bend, Ind., passed away at 1:05 a.m. Monday, July 29, in Regency Place of South Bend. She was born Sept. 20, 1917, in Pulaski, Tenn., to the late Willis E. and Adelaide E. (Birdsong) Winstead. She is survived by a sister, Ruth W. (Robert) Lee of Pulaski; two nieces, Lucy Collins and Martha Lee; a nephew, Robert E. Lee III; and by one great-niece and three great-nephews. Also left to cherish her memory is her longtime companion, Dorit Lust of South Bend. Ms. Winstead retired from the South Bend Medical Foundation as vice president of professional services after 42 years of service. She received her teacher's certificate from Athens College, Athens, Ala. She received her BA from Martin College, Pulaski, Tenn., and her MA from Indiana University. She was an emeritus member of Alpha Mu Tau, the DAR Schylur Colfax Chapter, the American Society of Medical Technologists and served as president of both the State and National Society 1971-1972. She was also a registered medical technologist A.S.C.P., and a registered blood bank technologist A.A.B.B. In 1970 she received the Professional Lectorship Award A.S.M.T. Ms. Winstead was an author of "The Re Agent Grade Water - How, Why, When" in 1968, and five volumes titled "The Descendants of Samuel Winstead." She was a member of the South Bend Geneology Society. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Cremation will be at the Michiana Crematory, and burial will be in her birthplace of Pulaski, Tenn. The Welsheimer Funeral Home assisted with the final arrangements.
