She was a member of Wallace Memorial Bapt. Church. She was born in Treadway, Tenn., later moved to Strawberry Plains. Then moved to Long Beach, Calif. for 27 years, and then to Knoxville. She was a beautician. Survived by husband, Price Edwin (Tommy) Turner; daughter, Judith Kitts Burge both of Knoxville; grandson, and wife, Mark and Kristine Burge of Calif.; great grandson, Nick Burge; granddaughter, Michelle Burge and great granddaughter, Abigail Burge; sister, Beuna Smith of Strawberry Plains; brother,Milburn Seale of Ga.; several nieces and nephews. Funeral service 8 p.m. Sunday Fielden Chapel with Rev. Paul Moore officiating. Interment 11 a.m. Monday Beaver Creek Cemetery.     3. The East Tennessee Historical Society is hosting its 2002 genealogy conference June 14 and 15 in downtown Knoxville. The conference will be located at the Knoxville Hilton, just a block west of the East Tennessee History Center. Detailed information, including a PDF version of the brochure sent to ETHS members, is now online at the ETHS web site: http://www.east-tennessee-history.org A brief description of some of the activities and sessions included in the conference follows: Friday, June 14, 6:00 p.m. – Midnight “Midnight at the McClung Historical Collection” @ the East Tennessee History Center ETHS will partner with the Knox County Public Library to feature a special event at the East Tennessee History Center. Attendance is limited to the first 45 registrants and includes an additional registration fee. The additional fee will be used to purchase resources for the McClung Collection.     3. >From the Topeka Capital Journal http://www.cjonline.com April 10, 2002 Larry E. Hopkins, 80, Topeka, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at a Topeka hospital. Mr. Hopkins worked in the office machine service field for more than 50 years. He also worked for 10 years in the Kansas Legislature. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and saw action in the European and Pacific theaters. He was born Sept. 7, 1921, in Sneedville, Tenn., the son of Charles and Laura Lucas Hopkins. He was raised in Sneedville, Tenn., and had lived in Topeka since 1943. He was a member of Grace Bible Church. He married Mary MacArthur on Nov. 18, 1944, in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include three sons, Gary Hopkins, Keller, Texas, Mike Hopkins, Topeka, and Mark Hopkins, Linwood; a daughter, Becky Streeter, Topeka; three brothers, Stanley Hopkins, Hemlock, Ind., Eck Hopkins, Sneedville, Tenn., and Herb Hopkins, Summitville, Ind.; and seven grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Alta Vista Cemetery in Alta Vista. Mr. Hopkins will lie in state after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, where visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Bible Church or the American Heart Association and sent in care of the funeral home.

Born Nov. 2, 1911, in Hancock County, Tenn., and a member of Friendship Baptist Church, Jonesville, Va. He attended Tenn. Poly Instate and Vanderbuilt University. His parents, W. M. Chambers and Lavina Chambers of Hancock County preceded him in death. Five brothers, Wright Chambers, Eugene Chambers, Dr. C. C. Chambers, Dr. S. C. Chambers, and Col. John Chambers, and three sisters, Roxie Campbell, Bobbie Nash, Nelia Drager, and one surviving sister, Maude Blackburn. Survived by his wife of 64 years, Johnnie C. (Overton) Chambers; 3 daughters, Judy & husband Harold (Trapp), Sylvia Chambers Pouney, Sharon & husband, Paul (Burton); son, Gary & wife, Marsha Chambers; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.     3. Hi to all listers, I just talked with my aunt who lives in Sneedville, and she said that the Town Creek that empties into the Clinch River was backed up almost to the 'old' high school. Hwy 66 and the hwy to Morristown are ok but the road to Tazewell is blocked. The bridge at Briar Creek is under water. If it doesn't rain heavily for the next few days it will be ok. From: The Knoxville News-Sentinel, Knoxville, Tennessee, March 14, 2002 Overton, James Malcolm (Jim) age 95 of Harriman passed away Tuesday March 12, 2002 at Harriman Care and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Overton was born in Hancock County, TN to the late Robert Patterson Overton and Lucy Epps Southern. Also preceded in death by: sister, Othella O. Pettigrew; and wife of 66 years, Margaret Cassell Overton. After graduating from Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) at Harrogate, TN, Mr. Overton came to Harriman in 1932 while working for the Tennessee State Highway Department and later during World War II went to work at the K-25 Plant where he retired from Union Carbide in 1972, after 28 years of service. As a Christian, Mr. Overton shared his faith and was a Deacon, Elder, Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent as well as holding other key positions in the First Christian Church of Harriman, Morrison Hill Christian Church in Kingston, and Post Oak Springs Christian Church at Post Oak where he was a member. He was very active in Civic Affairs and public causes having served on the Roane County Industrial Board, Roane County United Way Board of Directors, President of Politically Involved Citizens (PIC) and twice President of the Roane County Chapter of American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). As an outstanding athlete while attending LMU, playing both football and baseball, Mr. Overton was inducted into the University’s First Athletic Hall of Fame in 1981. Mr. Overton is survived by: three nephews, Richard Pettigrew of Coral Gables, FL, James Pettigrew of Easley, SC, Robert Pettigrew of Asheville, NC; and a cousin, Winnie Day of Harrogate, TN. Funeral 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Kyker Funeral Home Chapel in Harriman with interment 11:00 a.m. Friday at Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Kyker Funeral Home in Harriman. Quillen VA Medical Center, after a courageous battle with pneumonia. He was saved at a young age and became a member of Swan Creek Primitive Baptist Church. He was baptized by Elder Hobart Hall. He was a decorated, retired Navy veteran of the Korean War. Daddy fought all his life with war related illnesses. His fight is now over, he went home. We, the family, will miss him so much. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Lewis and Hattie Dodson Reed; brothers, Henry Lee, Kermit, and Dr. Fred W. Reed; sister, Jewell Dean Reed. Announcing the publication of the second volume of Tennessee Convicts: Early Records of the State Penitentiary. This volume covers records from 1850 through 1870, including more than 2,200 prisoners and their family members who are named in the original ledger volumes. During this period abolitionists, Confederate bushwhackers and Union army soldiers convicted by courts martial were among those who crowded the State Penitentiary. In addition, the regular complement of counterfeiters, horse thieves and murderers from across the state are also represented. He was a member of Sneedville Masonic Lodge #277, Scottish Rite in Knoxville, Kerbela Shrine Temple in Knoxville and Eiks Lodge #160. He served 11 years on the Hamblen County Election Commission. He was a graduate of Hancock County High School and attended Lincoln Memorial University and East TN State University. While living in Hancock County, he taught school and was a mail carrier. He worked for the State of TN, during the Browning Administration, with the Alcohol and Tobacco Taxing Authority. Following his move to Morristown, he worked as a veneer buyer with Hill Brothers Veneer for 18 years, later with Hatfield Lumber Company for 10 years. Hatfield Lumber Company became Stewart Lumber Company, where he worked for 10 years prior to his retirement in 1986. Preceded in death by his parents, Willis Winkler, Sr., and Mattie Givens Winkler; and brothers, Shields Winkler and Willis Winkler, Jr. Survivors: wife of 64 years, Lucille Holmes Winkler; sister, Hazel Turner of Sneedville; 3 nephews; caregivers, Gail Daniels, Margie Manning and Sally Turnmire. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Mayes Mortuary with Dr. Richard Emmert officiating. Interment will be in Jarnagin Cemetery. The famly will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Mortuary.
