Does anyone know anything about a GUESS or GUEST family that lived in Claiborne or Hancock County, Tennessee in the early to mid 1800s? My ggg grandmother was supposed to be Nancy E. GUESS, born around 1804 in Alabama. She married Adam HOPKINS of Claiborne County, Tennessee in the early 1820s. They were listed in the Claiborne County census in 1830 and 1840. In 1849 the family left for Iowa with other families from the area. Nancy became ill during the trip, and died shortly after they arrived in Iowa. Adam's brother Elijah HOPKINS reportedly married Nancy's sister Sarah (Sally) GUESS, born c1812. The only other record I have found for a GUESS or GUEST in this area was a Joshua GUESS listed in Dist. 11 in the 1839 Claiborne County Tax List. I would love to hear from anyone that might know something about this family! I would also be interested in hearing from anyone who might explain why the family moved from Alabama up to Tennessee. Most of the movement at that time was in the opposite direction! Thanks! Janet Messer Micanopy, Florida Researching BISHOP - HOPKINS - COLE - CLOUSE - CLARK - WEAVER - GUESS
Hi to all, The August issue of the "Looking Back" newsletter is up. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~lookingback/welcomepage.htm I unfortunatley did not get to add any images or indexes to Claiborne County TN 1900 census Hancock County, TN 1930 census or the Lee County, VA 1930 census. The Bell County 1930 PArt 1 index is complete. I will be continuing the images and indexes next month, sorry for any inconveince. There still alot of useful information for each county. There are some Claiborne County, TN businesses listed from 1892 Some more 1850 Lee County,Va names from the Mortality schedules some 1860 hancock County, TN names from the Mortality Schedules Some more names from the Bell county Land grants some families from the 1850 Lee County Va census Some families from the 1870 (first census for this county) Bell County, Ky census, when it was called Josh Bell Some familes from the 1850 Hancock County, TN 1850 census (First census for this county) My Cunningham family from Claiborne County, TN The blue lines are gone, that background didnt work as well I thought. Enjoy! Carol Looking Back
Hi everyone: There are 163 posting in rootsweb archives showing http://members.aol.com/~lctdugan/ which is now a dead link because that little squiggle "~" before lctdugan/ is no longer honored by AOL so that link goes to a "404 Error -- Resource Not Found" I am abandoning that URL also abandoning the email address: lctdugan@aol.com Please use mailto:lonn@lonnd.com for email ( LONN@LONND.COM ) Please use http://www.lonnd.com/tdugan/ for genealogy interest ( LONND.COM/TDUGAN/ For interest in George Slater THOMAS and wife Catherine ?Ingle? THOMAS of VA and TN see http://www.lonnd.com/tdugan/vacourts.html#gsthomas My maternal line is WALKER. Have Interest in THOMASes who returned to KY and southwestern VA after the F&I Wars. Philip and Henry THOMAS may have departed from Cumberland or Bedford County PA area in late 1730's or early 1740's, but we haven't found them. Maybe one sighting of Philip and some unknown THOMASes in the Early Religious Petitions in Virginia. Family lore tells more than we can document. Need document for parents of George "Slater" and Catherine ?Ingle THOMAS Interested also in INGLES about any way you want to spell it -- in Montgomery County Virginia early on. We do not presently know of any connection to William or Mary DRAPER INGLES of Ingles Ferry, but have several Henry INGLES in the area and would like to know whose family they are in. See http://www.lonnd.com/tdugan/vacourts.html#wmingle for William Daniel INGLE and Mary HANCOCK INGLE born circa 1745 with descendants. Some of this line goes through Buckingham County and it seems there are few or no actual records to support the family lore. Any Buckingham reconstruction or other information, however derived, is welcomed. Basically we are in trouble with THOMASes and INGLES before 1800. Not well documented before then. We especially need documents for Elijah INGLE as shown below. I have had 3 people email me about the Hancock County webpage. I have nothing to do with it. Just thought it would be great to have anactive one. Surely someone can help one of you or two of you to organize this. I know some webpages for counties have 2, one being an assistant. I found the name Jackie Robinson on the page and asked if she would help someone. She emailed me and said she would be glad to help...So, whoeve wants to write her here is her email addie. Hello, I have been trying for the last month to two months to adopt the Hancock County Site. I am Special Projects Coordinator of the Hancock County Historical & Genealogical Society. I was Secretary last year. I am currently the Co-Chairperson of the HANCOCK COUNTY & ITS PEOPLE VOL. III. I certainly would like to hear something. I also have a private website of cousins with roots from the Hancock County area. Debra Reed Hancock County Tennessee
Hi, I have emailed three times regarding adopting the Hancock County GenWeb page and have gotten no response. I do a monthly online newsletter called "Looking Back" and thought I would like to have the Hancock County site. I wanted to transfer some of the data I had on the newsletter site to the Hancock County Genweb and then in case anything happened to my newsletter (i become unable to do it for some reason) the information would be always be there. I am more than interested in adopting Hancock County site but have heard nothing. Carol Turner Looking Back
Listers: In the Tennesse Acts 1831-1850 I have found Asbury M. Coffey. He apparently applied to open a road in McMinn Co., TN in 1833. He is #39 (private), chapter 192, section 1. I would like to know if there are any Coffey researchers who may have some information on the Coffey family of McMinn Co., TN. In checking the census records there was also a Jesse Coffey and Marvel Coffey there. These are common Coffey names. I believe that some of the Grainger Co., TN Coffey siblings of Benjamin possibly moved to Benton Co., TN which was very near McMinn Co., TN. There is still a large family of Coffeys in the area of McMinn Co., TN (Athens) who still have a farm which has been theirs for generations and there is a old cemetery there. I have not visited the cemetery. Back in Grainger Co., TN I have a Frederick Mayers. He is #35 (private), chapter 141, section one, 1831. He is the deceased Town of Rutledge commissioner, not the Henry Maze I mentioned in my earlier post. I apologize for this error. I found no Mayers in the census but that doesn't mean I haven't overlooked them. I wonder if the enumerator or record keeper mispelled Mayes. Also, with this Frederick being deceased in 1831, does anyone know if the commissioners of Grainger Co., TN areas had a town commissioner and a county commissioner in 1821-1831? Could this Frederick taken the postion after Henry Mays/Maze died, stepped down, relocated? I also have our John Maye in the Tennessee Acts 1831-1850, 1847, #49, chapter 127, section 1, Grainger Co., TN. His description is "Mentioned". Since I have Big John Mayes as probably dying about 1848, is this John Maye a different John, or is it Big John Mayes? If anyone has any resources to check this and my previous post out, please post any response to the lists. Good Morning Listers: I would like to know if anyone can help me with the above man. I have Henry Mays as a Grainger Co., TN commissioner in 1811, and then, Henry Maze as a former Rutledge (Grainger Co., TN) commissioner, deceased. I believe these are most likely the same Henry, just variations of the surname as is was recorded. Does anyone know which family the above Henry(s) may have been descended? If anyone has the information from the Acts of Tennessee 1796-1830, Henry Mays is #17, chapter 82, section 1. Henry Maze is #26, chapter 193, section 3. Hello List I noticed that Hancock County has no coordinator. We really need one to put info on that page for people who are researching. Does anyone on the list want or be willing to Adopt it..There is basically no info at all. <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnhancoc/">Hancock County TNGenweb</A> http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnhancoc/ Milly WARD Piros List Rootsweb Administrator for Anderson Co Tn~Campbell Co Tn and Fentress Co Tn <A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/millyella/listofpages.html">A List of All My Pages</A> http://www.geocities.com/millyella/listofpages.html Genealogists live in the PAST Lane
Does anyone have access to this census listings? I'd like to know what the complete entry for the family looks like, especially their birth locations. Tennessee in 1850 census. It lists, Hancock Co, ELROD, all are in '32 subdivision': There is a Peter Elrod age 18 on page 7, also Mary age 21 and Sarah age 45. Many Thanks, Kathy in MN
Does anyone happen to have the marriage date for; William J. Davis b.1941 in Hawkins Co., TN which became Hancock Co., in 1844 he married Elizabeth ???(May be COBB, TRENT, GRANT) b. 1849 possibly Hawkins Co., TN They show up on the 1870 Hawkins Co., TN Census with a daughter NANCY age 3. So I can only assume that they married somewhere around 1866 give or take a few years. Ellen Maxey-Downum
Is there anyone that may be able to do a census look-up for me? I am unable to get a CLEAR image for the 1900 census for Hancock County, Tennessee 10th District, Enumeration District #72 Davis, William------------------what are the initials by his name? Thanks ahead of time Ellen Maxey-Downum
Hi, I posted earlier but it did not go through. I dont see much activity on this list but decided to post here just in case. I have an online newsletter called "Looking Back" and it deals with four counties; Lee county, Va, Bell County, Ky, Claiborne County & Hancock County, TN. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~lookingback/welcomepage.htm I have started adding the actual census images for the 1930 Hancock County census as well as an index to go with those images. I am adding images and the index as my time allows. I also have county tidbits that might be of interest. I have added images for the 1900 Claiborne county census(no index yet) and the 1930 Lee County, VA census(index to go with). Since Hancock County is a burned county there isnt alot of early records available so I am going to try to put all the census records up (most will be transcribed putting images up is very time consuming) that I can and any other data for this county as I find it. I would like to start a small Hancock county database so if you would like to contribute please do so. I havent figured out the best way to do this but am working on it. I welcome suggestions. there is a site search engine on the Welcome page that will help you search page on the site. If you have any quesitons please email me directly at ctlookingback@hotmail.com or the email address above. Thanks for reading, Carol Turner Looking Back
Hi, I don't see much activity on this list but am going to post here just in case. I have a online newsletter called "Looking Back" that deals with four counties; Lee county, Va., Bell County, Ky., Claiborne County & Hancock County, TN I have started putting the actual census images up for the 1930 census for Lee County, Va and Hancock County, TN there is also and index to go with the images that I have. I have also started putting the images for the 1900 Claiborne County census up (no index yet). I have the archives for the first 2 issues in case anyone missed them. The link for June is on the July issue and the link for May is on the June issue. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~lookingback/welcomepage.htm I have a site search engine on the welcome page that will make the site easier to search. This month there is some Hancock County businesses listed. The newsletter is updated every month with new additions to the census and other tidbits. I welcome feedback and being that Hancock County is a burned county there are not a lot of early records. My goal is to try to get most of the censuses for Hancock County on, most will transcribed (as I am finding that putting the actual images up is very time consuming, very much wanted but hard for me to do, my everyday life gets in the way:-)) and any other information that I can find. So anything that you would like to see (that is within reason:-)) please let me know. I would like to start a data base for Hancock County, so if anyone would like to contribute please do so. I would like it to be a family database with the earliest ancestor that anyone has good information on and then the people interested can either inquire with the actual researcher/submitter or if time allows I could start putting the information into to a family tree program and then send it out. This will not be easy, so to start I would like to have maybe just a database with the earliest ancestor from Hancock County you have and then the researcher/submitters leave email address or maybe I have keep the email addresses and then anyone interested can email me to get the email address (this might cut down on all the junk mail ). Does that make sense. Well, hope this makes it to a few people. If you have any questions please email me directly at ctlookingback@hotmail.com Thanks for reading, Carol
