The men you are looking for are John Templeton & James 'Jim' Wright. They killed an OWEN'S man and were sentenced to hang for their crime. Look in Hancock County & Its People Volume II. I think that is where the article about this is. If not, I have been sent this by a Wright & Templeton Researcher as they shot and killed Clinton H. Legere on July 19, 1903. Hello List, My gr-grandfather CHARLES LIDY OWENS was born 1861 in TN , moved to Rose Hill, Lee County VA and died 12-22-1890 possibly in Hancock Co Tn. He was shot and killed maybe on Wallen's Ridge. He was killed supposedly over a horse. I have been trying to find out WHO killed him. The only record of his death is in Lee Co ..says he was shot. No other info. Now my question...Is there anyone, any place, any old court records , any old newspapers of that era..1890-1891 in Hancock Co. Also Below are some articles in a book Hancock Co and it's people.......Does anyone know who JAMES or JOE OWENS was? ========================================================= Hancock County Wednesday March 11 1891 Another Hancock homicide JAMES WRIGHT shot and killed JOE OWENS at Kyle's Ford Hancock County on Saturday, February 28th. The killing was the sequel of an old grudge. Morristown Gazette ====================================================== A MURDERER ESCAPED JAIL DECEMBER 16 1891 JAMES WRIGHT whose arrest in Missouri and returned to Hancock County Jail at Sneedville we noticed in these columns a few months since escaped from that prison on the evening of December 3rd. It is said that WRIGHT had been confined in shackles to with in a few days of the escape., when the jailer was persuaded to remove them. WRIGHT was charged the murder of a man named OWENS in Hancock County. A negro prisoner escaped jail at the same time. ======================================================LIFE SENTENCE AFFIRMED WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 23 1892 JAMES WRIGHT who was sentenced by the Circuit Court of Hancock County to the penitentiary for life, for murdering of one OWENS at Kyle's Ford and who appealed his case to the Supreme Court had a hearing by that body last week and the sentence of the lower court was affirmed. ====================================================== HANCOCK WED MARCH 23 1892 JIM WRIGHT again escapes. News comes of a bloody fight in the third district of Hawkins County, On the morning of March 18th, in which JAMES WRIGHT wanted for the murder of JAMES OWENS, of Hawkins County, figured. It seems that the sheriff of Hancock County with a posse had traced WRIGHT to the house of kinsman AARON TEMPLETON where they came upon him at day break. A deputy knocked for admittance at the front door and when it opened by TEMPLETON walked in and demanded the surrender of WRIGHT, saying he knew he was there and that they had come for him and were going to have him before they left. TEMPLETON grew furious, telling the deputy he would die before he would allow them to take WRIGHT, at the same time impending the progress of the progress of the deputies. Shooting soon began and when the smoke cleared away it was found TEMPLETON had been shot, the bullet going through his body, and fatally wounding one of the officers. While the shooting was going on WRIGHT who had been sleeping upstairs, let himself down from the window of his room by means of a rope ladder and made good his escape. Good Morning, fellow East Tennessee researchers: I am doing some research and am hoping to determine some family connections on Perry Coffey. In my data I have three Perry Coffeys. I hope that two of them are the same individual but need your help in confirming my theory. I have Perry Coffey b c 1854 Hancock Co., TN, William Carroll Coffey and Martha J. Unknown as his parents. No marriages noted. Siblings of this Perry are: William Marion, Margaret, Sarah Jane, Jemina, Isaiah, James, Lydia, Rosa, John, Amanda, Jessie. I have Perry Coffey b c 1853 N.C., Cleveland Coffey and Malinda (dau of George Coffey) Coffey as his parents. The parents are not proven. This Perry married Sally Steve Ann Sanders in Ozark Co., Missouri in 1873 but was proven to be residing in NC in 1860. Possible siblings/half siblings, or cousins of this Perry include: Andrew Jackson, William W., Thomas Y. (or M.), Martha, Susan Elizabeth, George Holland, Margaret Elvira, Nancy Mahala, Frances L., Daniel P. M., Sarah, Napoleon, Jesse. I have Perry Coffey, no birth date known but was married to Nancy Mayes, daughter of Thomas Mayes, (son of Fleming), and Elizabeth Lawson Mayes. Based on Nancy's birth of 1852 I am assuming (!!!!!!) that this Perry Coffey was also born in her age group. This is all I have on this Perry. No parents, etc. If anyone has any clues, hints, help, or suggestions to provide please let me know. Also to the Mayes researchers, my Missouri Gentleman had no complications with his heart surgery and called me on Monday. He is expected to have a full recovery and his very first question was had I heard from the DNA 25 marker test. (No, it's too soon). He states as soon as the test results are noted he hopes to be connected to the East Tennessee Mayes and states he has more information to provide to me after the DNA results depending on who he may be connectetd to. We shall see. I also have not had any response from the lady I snail mailed a few weeks ago, which has not suprised me. Sheri bluemoonrotts@yahoo.com --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Listers: I have a Cleveland Coffey who helped in organizing the United Baptist Church of Christ of Cedar Springs, near Thornhill, Grainger Co., TN in January 1846. He was appointed the church clerk at the meeting to organize. Listed in the minutes were several ladies who were members of this new church, and three of them were Aelitha Harvy, Emiline Harvey, and Mary Harvey. I saw NO male Harveys joining in the list I read. In 1851, this same Cleveland Coffey was administrator of Celia Emaline Coffee's estate. Since he is administrator and not executor, I do not believe they were married, but do need to rule this out. I do have Cleveland as being married first to Susan Hayes in NC, then to Malinda Coffey, daughter of George Coffey and Margaret Rucker Coffey of Grainger Co., TN. This marriage was 11/1839. I do not know when nor where this Malinda died but would be thrilled to find any clues in that direction. Then Cleveland probably married Mary Ann Miles of Greene Co., TN but I do not know where that marriage took place as Cleveland died in Caldwell Co., NC in 1863 and Mary Ann was named the widow. If there is a Harvey researcher on the list, or if someone can help me determining who Celia Emaline "Coffee" was, and if she is the same Emiline on the church rolls, I would appreciate it. Good Sunday Morning, Listers: I found this and am hoping someone will know who this Nancy is for this Edward Hodge. The Edward Hodge I have in my data has no Nancy marriages. The Nancy I have in my database who would fit the c 1820 birthdate, TN is was married to John Joyce (she was Big John Mayes daughter, sister of Phebe, who did marry an Edward Hodge), but I believe this Nancy died in Trigg Co., KY.
