Does anyone have a printed census for 1850 for Hancock? I'm looking for details on this family: head of household is James, subdiv. 32. He's on page 10 of the original census. Seems to have his widowed daughter in law Sarah age 32 in his household. Need the exact listing of people & ages in the home. Thank you Nancy Cassada Nelson Bordentown NJ
Virginia, Morgan Anderson was postmaster of Datura 7-28-1893 and was father of Lucy m: John Rhea. Morgan was a vetern of the Rev War. Peter was postmaster of Beech Hill 1-25-1898. Also mentions that Peter was a County Trustee years of 1846-48 and 1874-76. I'm not sure if they were the same man...Maybe latter is his son as you will see below his daughter was born 1765 died 1843 Also says Peter (of Grayson Co VA) was the father of Nancy Anderson Livesay 1765-1843, wife of George. I sure want to get excited about your email! Things do look interesting though and we've been looking for a connection to someone else researching for a long time. I have forwarded your information on to an older cousin to see what she makes of this. If you have any documents on your information I'd love to hear what/where etc.or what assumptions you have made maybe it will help confirm a relationship. My great grandparents were Daniel Lewis Stewart born about 1859 in VA. d 5-10-1929 in Davidson, OK, Tillman County. He married Elizabeth Collins b abt 1862 in VA and d abt 1904 Lee County, VA probably Jonesville area. He also married Daisy King in OK. and had Gertrude b 1915 and Maureen b 1919 We found record of a Daniel Stuart and an Elizabeth Collins married in Hancock, TN in 1877. Told we cannot obtain copy of record since all records were burned. This information was published in ministers records but no further information has been found so this is unproven. Family story is that Elizabeth was disowned when she married Daniel because he was an orphan and had nothing. Twin sons Clyde & Claude said there was no family around when Elizabeth died. Times were hard for the family. The family is found on 1900 US Census, VA., Lee County which is the earliest we have found them anywhere so far. Daniel is found in 1920 US Census, OK, Washita County, ED 194 sheet4 family 61 Daniel, renting home, 54, read & write yes born VA, mother born VA, father born VA, occupation section head, railroad worker. Their children were: 1. Bradley Stewart, b 2-2-1880 Jonesville, VA Lee County d 1-8-1945 Pineville, KY, Bell County. He married 9-3-1903 in VA to Cordia Barlow b 3-30-1883 d 3-7-1920 Pennington Gap, VA Lee County. Their children were Bonnie Virginia Stewart b 6-10-1905, R C Stewart b 5-12-1907, Rusha May Stewart b 1-13-1909, Henri Louette Stewart b 11-05-1910, Guy Woodrow Stewart b 2-12-1913, Nell Jack Stewart b 12-06-1915, Ruby Golden Stewart b 12-13-1919. He also married Fannie Warden 3-26-1921 in Jonesville, VA Lee County 2. Nancy Stewart b Feb 1884 probably Lee County, married White Elderidge possibly in Bonham, TX. 3. Charles Stewart b Aug 1887 Lee Co. VA d in Baltimore, MD. married Bertha. 4. Clay Stewart b Feb 1889 VA ?, d 5-25-1955 in a tornado in Blackwell, OK. married Axie Slusher. Their children Charles, Vilas Lee, Cornell, and Mary Etta. He also married a Bertha ? 5. Fannie Stewart b May 1892 Lee County VA died in Enid OK. married Wylie Stanley and children Byna Mae Stanley and Vilas Lee Stanley. Fannie also married Charles Chapin. 6. Clyde Stewart (twin of Claude) b 8-13-1894 Jonesville, VA., Lee County d 10-20-1953 in St. Louis, MO at the Frisco RR hospital he was resident of Cordell, OK and is burried in Lawnview Cemetery Cordell, OK married 2-1-1914 in Clinton, OK to Cora Elizabeth Wilkins b 9-21-1895 Glen Rose, TX d 10-22-1984 Enid OK (These are my grandparents.) Their children Thelma Lucille Stewart, Ruby Maried Stewart (my mother), Clyde Howard Stewart, Kenneth David Stewart, James Lee Stewart and Donald Lewis Stewart. 7. Claude Stewart, Sr. (twin of Clyde) b 8-13-1894 Lee County, VA d 5-21-1992 in Tishomingo, OK buried Ravia, OK, married 12-27-1914 Lela Miranda Paralee Wilkins (this is sister of Cora Elizabeth Wilkins that married his twin Clyde.) she was born 1-22-1897 in Glen Rose, TX and d 6-1-1977 in Ravia, OK. Their children William Carl, Roy Donald, Claude Jr. Bobbie Joyce. 8. Margaret Stewart b May 1897 m Wesley Roush (This is all we have.) 9. Donna Belle Stewart b March 1900 married Jerry Evans with daughter Betty Jo 10. Cora Stewart b abt 1902 in VA may have died in Kingsport, TN married Ed Lumpkin 11. Wesley Stewart b abt 1904 twin of Tommy. 12. Tommy Stewart b abt 1904 twin of Wesley. Wesley and Tommy died at or shortly after birth. Elizabeth died as a result of their birth. We have not yet found her burial place or the burial place of the children. Some more details. Clyde and Claude were fraternal twins. Clyde was tall, dark hair and hazel eyed and I remember him as dark complexion. Claude was a small man in stature, very fair, with blue eyes and sandy hair. His beard was red. Family history says Clyde looked like his father, Daniel Lewis Stewart, and his twin Claude looked like their mother, Elizabeth Collins Stewart. Daniel and some of his sons were dark from what I can tell from a picture or two we have. We have not found earlier information and have been hoping to connect with some other descendents. Daniel may have been an only child. We have been wondering if he was melungeon. since we are at such a brick wall. I also remember my mother replying to my questions as a child saying that we were Irish and black dutch. Clyde, Claude and Daniel all worked for the Frisco Railroad. Well, what do you think? Where do you live? I am in Tulsa, OK and Bobbie Joyce (my mom's double cousin that I sent your info to) lives in Tishomingo OK. Do you think our Margaret Stewart and Wesley Roush could be related to your Ella Mae/Rose and John Wesley Rouse? With yours being in Lee County and then OK and working for the RR it sure is interesting. Do you know where in OK they were or when? I'll be anxious to hear from you and from Bobbie on the possibilities. Tina

I have no idea how much these costs or where to order them. But, it will be a break through for Black researchers. You may be able to inquire http://www.familysearch.com This information was in the Cleveland Oh Plain Dealer Newspaper. A Mormon Church has CD-ROM packed with thousands of records from the Freedmon's Savings and Trust Co., a post Civil War bank for ex-slaves. It will be unveiled on Monday by the Church of Latter Day Saints at a news conference. There will be more than 70,000 of rare, poorly organized and aging paper files of bank account holders. Slave ships kept no slave identities , and if they were kept it was by the owners and first name only. It has taken the Mormons more than five years to compile the records stored at the National Archives. Along with the names, addresses and employment information , the cards often had children's names and sibblings, service in the Union Army and the client's former owners, along with their former plantations. I am looking for the parents and siblings of ELVIRA "ELVA" COLLINS born 1782 Bedford County, Virginia and died after 1855 Hancock County, Tennessee. She married about 1803 in Lee County, Virginia to Moorman Lawson son of Bartholomew Lawson and Susannah Simkins. Any information on any Collins in the County during the time she was there is very much appreciated. Patricia
I am trying to make contact with anyone researching Ishom Mills (1761-1832) or his brother Hardy (1763-1841). Ishom is said to have raised 22 children; he lived in the part of Hawkins County that is now Hancock. My g g grandmother, Martha, whose last name was either Wells or Mills, married James Hopson in Claiborne County TN in 1844. I am trying to connect her to the Mills family of Hawkins-Hancock, if possible. She was born about 1824. Patsy may have been a daughter of the James Mills who was in Claiborne County for the 1830 census. She may be the 'extra' female age 20-30 in the 1840 Claiborne census, in the home of Hardy Mills (a younger Hardy, he is age 30-40 in 1840). If anyone knows which brother this Hardy & James belongs to, or if you have any info at all about Ishom & his brother Hardy, I will be grateful. Nancy Cassada Nelson Bordentown NJ
Hello there. I am hoping to contact any Sutton families in Hancock Co. and/or the surrounding area. At the Hancock Co. Fall Festival there was a Mr. Sutton who had a booth with knives of all shapes and sizes. If anyone knows him and would contact him for me I sure would appreciate it. I lost his business card and don't even recall his first name. We both figured we are part of the same Sutton family. Thanks very much and hope you all stay warm over there.
