    1. [TNHANCOC] Martha (Davis) Elrod
    2. Eddie Davis
    3. Martha (Davis) Elrod was my great grandpa George Washington (or "Wash") Davis' sister. Wash lived with them for a while and is listed in their household on the 1850 census, in fact, he was also listed with his widowed mother on the 1850 Claiborne County, TN census, apparently he arrived before the census taker in Hancock County. 2. Hallie Garner
    3. There is a Daniel Stewart listed as a child age 12 in Lee Co. in 1870. This fits with the dates you have for him. He is listed in the home of James Stewart age 64, Mary Collins age 50, Lenty age 26, Jane age 24, Daniel 12, Julia A. age 17, Caldenia age 8, Margaret E. age 14 and Sarah Goin age 70. James was born in Lee Co. and Mary Collins was born in Hancock Co. The 1870 census does not state relationships, so it does say if Daniel is a son or a grandson. This is Jonesville Township family 52, 1870 Lee Co. It might be your Daniel. You may want to investigate who the other people are to help determine relationships.

The best treatment I have seen on Goodmans in general is to be found in Pat Elder's book MELUNGEONS: Examining an Appalachian Legacy. This ia good sound book based on real research.

    2. Hi Terry I have a cd for Tennessee in 1850. It lists, Hancock Co, ELROD, all are in '32 subdivision': page 37:Rowan age 25, Martha age 29, Orlena age 1. There is a Peter Elrod age 18 on page 7, also Mary age 21 and Sarah age 45. All are white, all born TN. This cd doesn't give household number or line number, so you don't know family groupings for sure. You also can't see who is head of household, or if they are in a household headed by someone of a different name. On page 1 there is what appears to be a family: Elrod John, age 29, Susan age 30, Sarah, 8; Celia 6; Lewis 4; Rowan 2, Susan 0. Again, all white, all born TN. The disk is helpful but cannot replace looking at the actual records. Nancy

    1. [TNHANCOC] early Hancock Co. records
    2. Kathy & Greg Hines
    3. This URL http://www.state.tn.us/sos/statelib/pubsvs/earlyrec.htm says: The State Library & Archives lists the Hancock marriages as starting in 1930 and the probate records as starting in 1924. That isn't really all there is for Hancock Co., is it? I'm hoping to find a death/probate record for a Peter Elrod - probably about 1833 in Hancock or Hawkins Co. The children of Peter & Sarah Elrod should have started being old enought to marry about 1820. I did find my Rowan Elrod marrying on January 21, 1847 in Claiborne Co., TN. He was the second youngest of probably about ten children. Are there books to buy or places to write to hunt for early 1800 marriage and probate records in Hancock Co.? Many thanks to the veteran Hancock researchers who have already helped me. Because of that 1850 lookup, I *know* my family was in Hancock by 1850. You folks are the greatest. Kathy in MN

    3. Many Thanks Nancy, That does help - a lot! Rowan Elrod was supposedly born in Hawkins Co., TN and I have found that he and Martha Davis married in Claiborne Co. But, I couldn't find them on the 1850 until now. I think the Sarah you mentioned is his mother. The others are most likely siblings. Rowan & Martha Elrod are on the 1860 Pulaski Co., KY census. I was trying to locate the rest of the family with this ten year census leap back. You've helped me find them. Thank you! 3. My name is Terry Douglas Creasy and I been researching the family of Celia Goodman, who was b. about 1840/1850 believed in Hancock County, Tennessee. Does anyone know who her siblings are? It is believed that her children were illigitimate. Yet according to the International Genealogical Index, it says that a Thomas Goodman, supposedly my great-grandfather, married Celea (it says Celea Bunch) in 1884 in Tennessee. I believe the former is probably true; one son, William, was born May 1874--that's ten years earlier than the 1884 marriage date! Of course, that could be a typo error--should be 1874 instead of 1884--but according to records so far, they say that Celia never married and she had a large family. Her father was William Goodman, her mother Rachel Bunch; her grandfather was Benjamin Bunch, grandmother, Mary Dotson. Celia had eight children: 1) Mollie; 2) Martelia, who m. El Courtney; 3) Mary, who m. John Belcher; 4) Rev. William Goodman, who m. Louise Oxford; 5) George; 6) Robert Taylor ("Uncle Bob"), who m. Annie Creasy; 7) John, who m. Maude Hall; and 8) Elizabeth ("Lizzie") who m. Clarence Costello Creasy--my grandparents. Elizabeth was b. 15 Dec 1885 in Sneedville, Hancock County, Tennessee and d. 1 Sep 1964 at Barbourville, Knox County, Kentucky. Clarence Costello was b. 5 Sep 1886 in probably Knox County, Kentucky and d. 20 Oct 1946 at Pineville, Bell County, Kentucky. Elizabeth and Clarence are buried at Stacy Cemetery, Girdler, Knox County, Kentucky. Any information on Celia or Thomas would be deeply appreciated. Thank you. Thomas Goodman was believed to have to born abt 1854 in Tennessee. Sincerely, Terry D. Creasy

    3. What great list members! Thanks so much to everyone for the information regarding availability of these papers. I'll check them out. I'm researching a Daniel Lewis Stewart b abt 1859 marriage to Elizabeth (perhaps Martha) Collins b abt 1862 and died abt 1904. They are on the 1900 Lee County Census with 9 of their children. I did find a Daniel Stuart marriage to Elizabeth Collins in Hancock, TN 4-29-1877 on a list copied 1916 by Rev. Arthur H Taylor. I'm told there are no marriage records in Hancock County for this period due to a fire. Can anyone identify who the above are to help me eliminate or confirm them? Does anyone have a missing Elizabeth? Or Daniel? Twins could run in Elizabeth's family she had two sets. Elizabeth is described as fair with red hair. Daniel was dark with black hair. Believe they were sharecroppers in Lee County. Family story is that Daniel was an orphan and Elizabeth was disowned for marrying him since he had nothing. We also have heard we have indian, black dutch ancestors. Any help appreicated!

    2. Regarding the William Grohse papers, I know that the Latter Day Saints library in Salt Lake has at least one microfilm of his work, that is available on loan at your local Family History Center. Look in their index under Hancock County. Nancy

    3. Many of the Wm, Grohse papers have been microfilmed and are available both from the Tennessee State Library and the FAmily History Center of the LDS Church. There is nearly always a branch of the Family History Center in every town where you can borrow their microfilm for only the cost of mailing. They are most generou. The papers are not always indexed so you look through the pages and then copy the pages you want. Depending on where you live, the library may have them because many libraries do, since there is so little material available on Hancock County. Yes, there was a Stewart family that lived on Newman's Ridge, but whether or not they were Melungeon I don't know. There were others that were not Melungeon living in the Mulberry Valley and Blackwater that are often confused with the Melungeons.

    3. I have a two page document, photocopied many times, that may possibly have been passed on by William Grohse, described as the resident genealogist of Hancock Co., now deceased. This appears to be a typewritten account and it appears to be in book form or possibly from a binder. This document has the lineage of my Goodman family from Hancock Co., with references such as: (p.108 AHT, pp. 77 & 78 AHT), etc. - does this refer to an Ahnentafel? When showing children, it starts "Issue", then it lists the children. I am fairly new to genealogy, so I am not familiar with all the terminology. Wondering if any of this is familiar to anyone, and where I might be able to get more information. Bill Lines wdl74@adelphia.net

    1. [TNHANCOC] Mary Carpenter born Jan 1878
    2. Seeking info on the family of Mary Carpenter born Jan 1878. About 1897 she married John S. Williams and their son Elisha was born in 1898. After 1900 they had two more children Lydia and Nellie. Nellie died when she was only three months old. Mary died young. Her daughter Lydia probably lived with her Aunt Laura Mabe (wife of Bill Mabe) after her mother Mary died. She married Mr. Baker. Lydia had three sons who were placed in an orphans home when she died of tuberculosis so she must have died at a young age. Nothing is known about the first name of herhsuband or what happened to her husband. John Williams married second to Blanche--last name unknown. No further information is known on this marriage except that they did not have any children. Finally about 1920 John married Lida S.Brown, daughter of Richard and Frances (Grigsby) Brown. Any information about any of these folks would be greatly appreciated--especially about Lydia Baker and her three boys . Vinita Lynch Shaw vinil@aol.com
