Lillard The Garden Club of Benton has erected a marker in the Town of Benton Cemetery, " IN MEMORY OF EARLY SETTLERS, CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS AND SLAVES OF POLK COUNTY WHOSE GRAVES HAVE BEEN LOST" The marker is constructed of rock from the JD Clemmer map of Polk County; with the Clemmer Family donating the rock. The bronze plaque was given by Mr.s Susan Jones. Included in the memeorials are the slaves of the Hildebrand Family, the Gamble Family and the McClary Family. James McKamy's farm which had gained prominence as a stock stand on the Old Federal Road later became the Town of Benton. During the second week of April, 1840, Benton was sold at auction bringing, in all. $11,386.00. However,James McKamy gave each of the three churches, the Baptists, Methodist and Presbyterian a lot; he also donated the original Town of Benton Cemetery.
