    1. [TNHAMILT] Roach Farm
    2. Hi List!!! I am looking for "Roach Farm" where there is a small cemetery. There is a possibility that my ggrandfather Harvey Ferris/Farris might be buried there. I got a reply that there is a Roach Hollow Road about 5 miles from the Tenn. and Georgia line. Roach Hollow Road is supposed to be south of Chattanooga. According to his death notice included in his Civil War military rec'ds he died in Daisy, Tn. I would like to know if Roach Hollow Road is near and could it possibly lead me to Roach Farm??? As usual, I truly appreciate any insight you might have. Thanks for the help! I'm still looking for Harvey's burial site. Barbara from San Diego

    1. [TNHAMILT] RAINS LOOK-UP
    2. Jo Basden
    3. David, I did not find your Philip but these RAINS are who I found in Hamilton County, TN on the various censuses: 1840: JOHN S. RAINS 20001 - 10001 1840: JAMES RAINS 00000001 - 00000001 1850: #387/#387 Harrison Twp. RAINS, Liburn 26 m. farmer TN Rebecca 21 f. TN Missouri 03 f. TN James 1 m. TN 1850: #768/#768 Chattanooga RAYNES, Sarah 22 f. Tn Philip 1/2 m. I would suspect that Sarah is probably the widow of your Philip and they named their son Philip. Philip could possibly be the son of John S. Rains of the 1840 census but the census certainly does not show an 11 year old boy in the household in 1840. And James of 1840 seems too old and does not show a son. Hope some of this gives you at least a lead...Jo "david c. rains" wrote: > I am trying to identify the parents, birthplace, etc., of Philip > Rains, > who appears in the 1850 Mortality Index for Hamilton County as dying > of > "the fever" at age 21. > > Does the Index have such information and if so, is there anyone in > Hamilton County who might check it for me? 1. [TNHAMILT] Living Person Query - # 3
    2. Tim Stowell
    3. When I was associated with the Volunteer State Life Ins. Co., in downtown Chattanooga, several unique and colorful individuals frequented the area. One of these people was "Murph." I never knew much about the man, I dont even know his full name. My best guess is that his last name was Murphy. "Murph" was small of stature, with a prominent nose. His voice had a nasal, "hushed" tone. He had a quick, jerky gait and always walked as if he were on a mission. He was a "regular" in the lobby of the Volunteer building and, I imagine, was similarly recognized in lobbies of other buildings all over the city. Murphy lived in the Colonial Hotel across from the old newspaper building on 10th Street. For a time, he worked on a part-time basis at Spencers News Stand on 9th Street, half way between Cherry and Market, before 9th Street was widened. One of his co-workers there was Alec, or Alex, a "small fellow." Spencers was a fairly large place, with a soda fountain, a selection! of tobaccos, newspapers, magazines, etc. Spencers was owned by Johnny McMahon, "a tall, pleasant fellow," who also owned a nearby pawn shop. Harry Allen, a popular policeman who walked a beat in that area, and all the druggists from Moore and King, would occasionally stop in at McMahons place for a soda. Allen later became a Chattanooga city official. "Murph" ran errands for Elmer Baker, long-time elevator operator in the Volunteer Building, and may have also served as a courier for downtown law firms. He also frequented the American Legion Hall on Lindsey Street and ran errands for its members. "Murph" was virtually never seen without his raincoat, which he wore all the time, regardless of the weather or the temperature. Some say "Murph" had been in the Army and that he advanced to the rank of sergeant during the second World War. His family may have lived in New York. If anyone knows anything more at all about "Murph," please contact me. 73060.3310@compuserve.com - Tom Williams

Does the Index have such information and if so, is there anyone in Hamilton County who might check it for me? I will be glad to pay for a researcher's time. Thanks, David C. Rains
