Ron to give you some help to your question: There is an abstract of the 1862 Assessment List of the United States Direct Tax Commission for Hamilton County, Tennessee. It was created from National Archives publication T227, Assessment Lists of the United States Direct Tax Commission for the District of Tennessee located at the Tennessee State Library and Archives and other locations. It contains an alphabetical list of property owners, the civil district in which the property was located, the amount of land owned, the value of the land, the amount of the property tax and the page number of the microfilm on which the complete entry will be found. . The assessment was made under the Act of Congress entitled, "An Act for the Collection of Direct Taxes in the insurrectionary districts, within the United States, and other purposes, approved June 7, 1862, and the act amendatory thereto." you do not say where you live, if in Chattanooga, I would suggest the library. I know the Bradley county has this microfilm, but don't know if it also contains Hamilton co?? A FAVOR: if you find that the Hamilton Co library does have this microfilm, or does NOT have this microfilm in its collection, would you please post the response on line, -- so when next in Chattanooga, I can request that film. if you are close to a NARA facility they also may have it -- check first. I found it most helpful for Bradley county, as it stated exactly how much land they owned. Phebe Morgan
I'd need a map or metes and bounds definition of the 1860 Districts used in the census that year. Is there any source for that data? In doing a search for the land that someone lived on at that time, this would be an invaluable tool since they didn't own the land and wouldn't be listed in a deed record. Is there a tax roll for personal property for any year close to 1860? Ron McCandless
I've a question from a visitor that I can not answer and am therefore seeking an answer here. They seek a cemetery in Red Bank by the name of the Mt.Herman Meeting House cemetery. Is anyone aware of such a cemetery and if so, just where it is located? Thanks, Tim
I am working on a research project involving families from the 1920 Hamilton County census in the areas which are now from Highway 58 just below Harrison, to Tyner and Silverdale. Perhaps your family lived in these areas. I have listed over 125 surnames below. If you recognize a family surname and would like to share information, please contact me privately through e-mail to get more specifics on head of household, spouses and children in order to see if we're talking about the same family. I would appreciate any help! Thank you! For anyone that is interested, there will be a get-together of descendants of JOSEPH and MAHALA MCMURRAY HENDERSON on Saturday, October 27, 2001 at Bethel United Methodist Church in Whitfield County, Dalton, GA. Bring a covered dish and your cameras. Dinner will be around 1 PM. This get-together is occasioned by the visit to our fair city of Peter and Maureen Furmidge Henderson. Peter is the son of Jesse Francis Henderson, grandson of William H. Henderson and greatgrandson of John David and Mary Elizabeth McCune Henderson. Jesse (Peter's father) disappeared during World War I and was thought to be dead. However, he fell in love with and married a young lady in England by the name of Gertrude Sanders and stayed there. After his parents death, Peter began searching for his American family with very little to go on, but he did find us and made his first visit here in 1981. We hope that everyone connected with the family will stop by this Saturday and say hello to Peter ! and Maureen and any of the rest of us that they don't know. All descendants no matter how remote are welcome. If you need directions or information please feel free to contact me. I would appreciate the assistance of a knowledgable subscriber. For the period 1970-1979, was Tyner considered within the city limits of Chattanooga? Would a postal address for the period, for someone residing in Tyner, have been given as Tyner, or Chattanooga? Thank you. C. Ward CMW12635@aol.com
Hi All: I am unsubscribing from this list for the next three weeks because of vacation plans. In fact, I'm going to be in Hamilton County, searching for my ancestors. See you all when I return. The directions listed on the Hamilton County Cemetery Page gives the following: "This Thurman Cemetery is located three miles south of Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., TN. Go south to St Elmo three miles to Powell's store, and to the left for one block. Mr Elijah Thurman gave the land in 1873, he being the first person buried there in 1873." I have prowled this area and by going the specified three miles, I end up in GA. Does anyone have better directions? Thank you.
Well, good, Betty. This 1860 listing confirms that the 1880 J. P. McMILLIS I found is the right family. The J. P., Nancy, and James are the same, and D. C. must be David. Some years ago I ran accross a online record of the people who formed a church. I don't remember the exact name but I do remember it had Raccoon in the name. Could have been Primitive Baptist or perhaps Presb. I know there is a Raccoon Mt. in the area of Marion and Hamilton Cos. and that corresponds to the area that I had ancestors in 1836-1840. Can anyone tell me if a roll or record of any church exists in that area? Ron McCandless
I've not gotten any mail in the last couple days. Just checking if I'm still a member. ******************************************* frichter@infocom.com http://www.infocom.com/~frichter
The "Cleveland Banner" newspaper, dated May 5, 1882 has this article: "J.P. McMillan, an old and prominent citizen of Chattanooga, died in that city on the 26th ultimo." I believe this is my gr-gr-grandfather. Does anyone have any information on this J.P. McMillan? Any help will be deeply appreciated. Betty Guthrie McCollum
I've added another 280 graves to Forest Hills cemetery on the Hamilton site. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnhamilt/frsthill.htm covering the burial period of March - September, 1910. Tim Stowell CC Hamilton, James Counties RC West Tennessee
I don't know anything about the newspaper, but I believe, if I'm not mistaken, that the name is SODDY-Daisy, not Snoddy-Daisy...Jo

Is there a newspaper which serves Snoddy-Daisy? I would like to see if I can find an obituary for a Frank Edwards who had lived there for several years and died about March 1 of this year. I have just found out that I may be a very distant cousin of his. I would like to know who his survivors are so that I can locate them. Thanks for your help. Mildred Greenstreet
Again I am trying to connect with a fellow researcher who might have James M. Smith b. 1809 in their data base. What I have on him is as follows: James M. Smith married Susan Wallen about 1830 in Hamilton Co., TN. They lived there in 1830 and 1840. In 1830 they were living by a Charles Smith, old enough to be the father of James, but I have no proof. By 1850 they were living in Lookout Mountain, Walker Co., GA. By 1860 the family which includes the following children (William, Sally, Mary, Priscilla, Campbell, Nancy, Caroline Catherine, Martha, and Tennessee) had migrated to Randolph Co., AR. It is in Randolph Co., they settled. This family belonged to the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Hamil. James M. Smith died 8 Dec 1877 and is buried most likely in the Roach Cemetery in Randolph Co., AR. If you know of this Smith family or have run across it in your Smith research, I would love to hear from you.
Deb, There are several Dooley's, can you give me some first names or approx. year of birth?? Beverly
