Can anyone tell me (1) where Tannery Flats is or was? (2) What and where the community of Lxxxxfree was, listed in the 1860 census, and perhaps others. (I believe it was / is near Lookout Mountain.) (3) Is there a town history that tells how Duncan Avenue was named? I am researching a Duncan family. A. DeN. Ayer

It has been a long time since I posted this STOUT line. I would like to connect with descendants of Samuel STOUT b. abt 1801 in Randolph Co., NC Samuel Stout married Mary (possibly FOUST) abt 1821. They had the following children. Those not proven have an * in front of their name. *Luke P. b 1823 *Zeno b. 1824 Lasadia b. 1826 Elizabeth b. 1828 William M. b. 1928 Mary b. 1831 Martha b. 1833 Sarah b. 1835 Samuel b. 1839 The family was living in Hamilton Co., TN in 1850 with the exception of Luke, Zeno and Lasadia. By 1860 Samuel and Mary are in DeKalb Co., AL, as is Luke, Zeno, Lasada and Samuel the son. William M. is in Randolph Co., AR and Elizabeth who married John HUMES is in Livingston Co., KY. Martha who married William BEAN remained in Hamilton Co., TN. If you connect with this Stout line, I would love to compare information. I would especially like to know if you have discovered what happened to Mary and Sarah. Kathleen Burnett

Looking for anyone who has any information on a Wesley Davis who bought river-bottom land in Hamilton Co. area in 1855. The source of this info names 2 children: L. Davis and Jane T. Davis Wolf. Anyone recognize any of these names? Donna
I've added a feature to the main page of the Hamilton County site - so that you can choose different backgrounds as suits your taste. Please let me know what you think of it. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnhamilt/ Additionally the James County site has a book listed that you may be interested in concerning Tennessee Prisons. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnjames/ Tim Stowell tstowell@chattanooga.net Chattanooga, TN
I'm hoping someone has information on George Washington Wolf b. ca 1814, 1st wife, Elizabeth d. ca 1865, 2nd wife Malinda. He is usually seen as Washington Wolf. He is found in Hamilton Co. in 1850, 60, 70 and in 1880 he and family are in James Co. He and my gggrandfather, Thomas Davis, bought and sold some land in Hamilton Co. in the 1840's. I'm wondering if there was any family tie between the Wolfs and Davis's - possibly Elizabeth was a Davis? Anyone out there know about these folks? Donna

Some sank deep roots and others moved on, scattering our ancestors from coast to coast. Our purpose is to have fun, get acquainted, and swap genealogical information. The above is a list of the families which we know for sure had ties in early East Tennessee and the ones we have some information on. However, ALL surnames are welcome to attend whether your name is listed here or not! There will be a wealth of information to share. Plan on attending please! We Do Need A Head Count though as to NOT overbook the Park. (Numbers of persons coming that is what needed). We would love to have volunteers for some of the surnames on the list to act as co-hosts/co-hostesses to greet and help people with their surname, to be made to feel welcome and to help them meet researchers working on the same surnames. We want everyone to have fun, feel welcomed, and enjoy themselves. **That's What Tennessee Stands For: THE VOLUNTEER STATE ** "Where pride walks and the flag flies!"** We know that we have some college instructors attending who perhaps can be persuaded to speak about history/genealogy. We also have experts and accredited genealogist who have been researching for 30 plus years. They are ready to share their information with us. ---------------------- Attendance is FREE . . . but we will have a "donation" jar to offset the cost for using the campground, tableware, entertainment, and clean up. ---------------------- PLEASE PLAN ON ATTENDING AND BRING: 1. First and foremost yourselves... 2. ALL BOOKS, BIBLES, PICTURES, FAMILY SHEETS, AND INFORMATION YOU HAVE AVAILABLE... 3. A covered dish to share. (For those who are traveling some distance and for whom this is not a feasible option, you may either bring a sack lunch or a non- perishable or deli item that can be picked up at last minute locally. 4. Drinks, ice chest 5. A chair or blanket to sit on...If you are serving as a host or hostess, you will also need a small table (card table size or larger) to display your family information on. -------------------------- Last year was our first attempt to pull all these early settlers' descendants together. As far as we knew, it had never been attempted before. It was a resounding success for a first attempt, and it was agreed that it should become an annual event. This area is so very rich in history, both as an Indian frontier and as an isolated jewel of Union sympathy during the Civil War. It also served as a departure point for westward movement and new settlement. Our ancestors left us a rich heritage, which we are striving to preserve and pass on to our children and grandchildren. This rich tapestry of ideals and values is what made us a great nation and what made each of us what we are today. And it began with our earliest immigrant ancestors who came here to start a new life and a new country. COME and SHARE that heritage with us on July 13-14. We are looking forward to making many new friends!! The East Tennessee Historical Society invites members and guests to attend one of four Civil War genealogy workshops in February conducted by noted lecturer and author Dr. George K. Schweitzer. Two workshops will be hosted in lower East Tennessee in McMinn and Hamilton counties. Workshop participants will learn how to determine if an ancestor served in the Civil War, how to locate records for both Confederate and Union veterans, and how to prove descent. Research will focus on Tennessee, but much of the information will apply to other states, as well. The workshop is being held in conjunction with the East Tennessee Historical Society's new heritage program, Civil War Families of Tennessee. Workshops are free and open to the public. A schedule of the lower East Tennessee workshops is as follows: February 16, 2002 - Athens, TN - 10 a.m. to Noon McMinn County Courthouse, Blue Room Cosponsored by the McMinn County Historical Society February 16, 2002 - Chattanooga, TN - 3 to 5 p.m. Chattanooga-Hamilton County Bicentennial Library, 1001 Broad St. Cosponsored by the Chattanooga Area Historical Association, the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Bicentennial Library, the Dade County (GA) Historical Society, and the Delta Genealogical Society For directions to the various meeting locations, please contact the following organizations: Feb. 16 - McMinn County Historical Society, 423-744-3911 Feb. 16 - Chattanooga-Hamilton County Bicentennial Library, 423-757-5317 For additional information about the East Tennessee Historical Society genealogy workshops, please contact Cherel Henderson, ETHS Associate Director, 865-215-8823, cherel@east-tennessee-history.org, or visit the ETHS web site at www.east-tennessee-history.org

I have a picture of a boy with the age of 13 yrs & surname, KNOEDLER, written on the back. A first & middle name are also written on the back of the pic, but b/c of confidentiality concerns, I'm not posting the full name. On the front of the pic mat is a studio name, but the name is not very legible. It looks like H. W. G????? - but I can make out that it was or is in Chattanooga, TN. This picture was in a used frame a relative bought, and I'd really like to get it back in the hands of the rightful owner. I've also posted to the KNOEDLER family forum on GenForum. Dating photos is not a talent I have - the child is in a suit & tie & I suppose it could be anywhere from the 1920's - 1950's. If you think this is a relative of yours, pls let me know & tell me the full name of your relative so I can check it against the full name on this photo. I am not a regular subscriber to this list - only joined to post this msg. Will stay subscribed for about a month in case anyone posts a response to the list, but prefer that I be contacted off list at my email addy below. Thanks. Since some of you most likely have Georgia connections: Forwarded with permission: Hi all, I have just completed the informational pages for the Georgia Civil War Soldiers Index. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gagenweb/military/gsi/index.html ===================== I want to thank Virginia Crilley and Tim Stowell for lots of help and encouragement during the course of this project. Feel free to link to it from your county sites, special project sites, personal sites, etc. ===================== The Index is an alphabetical listing of most soldiers serving the state of Georgia during the War Between the States. In all, the list contains over 211,000 records, with more (approximately 10-20,000) to come in the next few months. I have received approximately 450 emails regarding this Index since it went online in late December. I have received many thanks from those who have found information on their ancestors. Along with many of these thanks, came offers to assist me in my genealogy research should the need arise. Please save your offers to help me personally. Instead of using your time to email me (unless you have a question not contained in the FAQ), please transcribe a deed, or a will. Anything you have lying around in your files. When you have it transcribed, send it to the county coordinator for that county, and/or the county file manager for the Archives. Let's get a much larger amount of free data online this year, than has been seen in all previous years. I hope the Index helps you in your research, I know it has mine. Sincerely, Keith Giddeon Tim Stowell CC Hamilton, James Counties RC West Tennessee
TN didn't require death records until 1914 and even then it took a few years before everyone complied and filed the records with the counties. Chattanooga and Hamilton Co. recorded a few before that but the records are not complete. (Some of these records can be requested and viewed through the Church of Latter Day Saints' Family History Centers). You can also request records from the Tennessee State Library and Archive. Their website http://www.state.tn.us/sos/statelib/pubsvs/intro.htm also has a small index for some early death records. I have had more luck establishing 'date of death' through obituaries. The Chattanooga-Hamilton County Library has a wonderful data base on line. You can't view the obits but you can research names and general dates and then order a copy. Best of luck! Mary
