    3. According to the Tennessee Atlas and Gazetteer by Delormer page 24-D1 - Whiteside is in the edge of Marion County TN near Dade County, GA. It is a few miles west of Chattanooga and east of the Tennessee River on State route 134. Interstate 24 appears to go near it. 1. [TNHAMILT] ALLRED/ALREAD
    2. I am looking for information on the ALLRED family who lived in St. Elmo from at least 1880 until approximately 1920. The name is also sometimes spelled ALREAD, though this occurs only after 1901. So far, I have been unable to locate anyone who knows much about this family and their life experiences in St. Elmo. However, I believe in "six degrees of separation", so I am hoping someone on this list will have some new information for me. My husband's great-grandfather was William Blackstone ALLRED. He was born in Overton County, TN in 1826 and died in St. Elmo in 1901 (buried in the Chattanooga Confederate Cemetery). In 1877, he married Loraine SHAW (nee SPARKS) in Hamilton County. Loraine was a widow with two daughters from her previous marriage. (She is buried at Forest Hills.) After their marriage, they settled in the Lookout Mountain/St. Elmo area, and some family members think that some members of the SPARKS family owned property on Old Wauhatchie Pike prior to this date. The daughters from the 1st marriage of Loraine SPARKS were: Anne SHAW married John BLAYLOCK in 1880. Josephine SHAW married Robert L. BICE in 1889. The BICE family ran the Incline. Both the BLAYLOCK and BICE families remained in the St. Elmo/Chattanooga area. Josephine died in 1912, and Anne died in 1942. My husband's family has lost all contact with these descendants over the years. William Blackstone ALLRED and Loraine SPARKS had the following children: Charles Frederick ALLRED, born 1879. He died in 1955, and he is buried in Forest Hills Cemetery. Although the family refers to him as "Uncle Fred", he is buried under the name Charles Frear ALREAD. Isabell ALLRED (called Issie) was born in 1881. Her first husband was Frank FOWLER, and he is buried in Forest Hills along with their adopted daughter who died at age 2. Her second husband was Mr. BROWN. She married a 3rd husband after she moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Lorraine ALLRED (called Lula) was born in 1883. She later marries in Alabama and moves to Cleveland, Ohio. William Bailey ALLRED (called Bud or Bud Bailey) was born in 1885. Although he dies in Cleveland, Ohio in 1919, he is buried in Forest Hills Cemetery in Chattanooga. His death certificate refers to him as William ALREAD, but the obituary in the Chattanooga newspaper calls him Bailey ALLRED. Beulah ALLRED was born in 1891. She later marries and moves to Birmingham, Alabama. My father-in-law is the son of William Bailey (Bud) ALLRED and Effie HOUSE. He was born in St. Elmo on July 4, 1914. Unfortunately, Bud and Effie separated, and Bud died in 1919. Therefore, my father-in-law did not get to know much about the ALLRED side of the family. However, he did live in the Chattanooga area until he married in 1936. The family name was changed from ALLRED to ALREAD between 1901 and 1905. My husband has discussed this with numerous family members and has received varying explanations. One things is certain, however, it was NOT a clerical error. The family purposely changed the last name. If you have any information on this family or if you can point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. Michelle Alread

    1. [TNHAMILT] Davis Family, Chattanooga, TN
    2. Martha Davis
    3. Hello everyone! My name is Martha Davis and I am a 29 year old telephone secretary/writer wanna be currently living in Atlanta, Georgia. During recent events, I have become visibly aware of how small my family as become - as my mother says "almost extinct" - and I feel a longing to learn more about where I came from and find the missing family that has slipped away from contact for various reasons. Since I've never been a geneologist before, I looked to the internet to find out how to get started. Instruction #1 - start with your immediate family. Get all you can from them. Just my luck! I will have to find my immediate family before I can ask anything...(Hee Hee) My mother, Julianne Ledford, married Carroll Jacob Davis in Hamilton, County (Chattanooga) in 1971. She was 18 and he was 26. My mother remembers he had been married twice before and I have two older half-sisters and a half-brother. The brother is about 2 years older than me and his name is Jeff. (My mother used to babysit him when she was pregnant with me and believes his biological mother is named Cynthia.) I was born in August 1972 and my parents divorced three months later. Mom moved to Atlanta in search of work and slowly lost contact with "C.J." Davis. She remarried a few years later and I became the cutest, blondest new member of my stepfather's (John Owens) family. (which has a strong Cherokee Indian background). I am going through the process of learning more about my mother's and my stepfather's past (as I am just as much as member of that family as any "blood" kin) but I would love to find those missing brothers and sisters from the Davis family...to start learning more about my biological family as well. If anyone has any information..please e-mail me and I will respond immediately. Martha Ann Davis Seduce her mind and you can have her body, find her soul and she's yours...forever. ---Anonymous

    1. [TNHAMILT] Charles Wesley HOWARD
    2. Patricia Payne
    3. I am a new member of the list and have several connections in Chattanooga. I am looking for info on Charles Wesley (CW) HOWARD and his wife, Emma/Ella TRUNNELL. He was originally from Ohio and she was from Bullitt Co., KY which is just outside of Louisville. They married in KY in 1879 and are in Chattanooga in the 1880 census. He was "General Agent for the CSRR". I assume that is a railroad? They are still in Chattanooga in the 1920 Census, at 609 Chamberlain Ave. He is listed as an "industrial manager", 68 yrs. His wife was still living and there is also Tam M. 30, f, born in Tenn , who was a teacher in the Public Schools, who was living in their household. I am interested in locating them in an earlier census and finding info on children, etc. I don't know if "Tam" was their daughter or not. Are there any indexes for the 1900 or 1910 censuses of Hamilton Co? Thank You for any Help, Pat in FL

    1. [TNHAMILT] James and William Williams
    2. Hi, my name is Lynn Alberti and I am new to this list. I have been researching my family tree for years and have a brick wall and need some help. My ggggrandfather was James Williams and according to his will he was a partner in the steamboat "Jefferson" as well as "Friendship" and a claim against "Lewis Wetzel." According to the book "Ways Packet Directory" -- the Jefferson ran on the upper Tennessee River by James and William Williams - I am under the impression they were brothers. I would truly appreciate ANY information on these two men. I do thank you for you time and any help or suggestions you may have! - Lynn in California

    2. I want to thank everyone on the list who has suggested I contact the author directly. He has informed me that he has no extra copies himself. In addition, he wrote, "this was the product of the St. Elmo Improvement League and they control the rights to it or we [Mountain Press] would have had it reprinted." Hopefully, someday the book will be reprinted, as I have quickly discovered a large group of people who are also interested in obtaining this book. Thanks to everyone for some great suggestions. 1. [TNHAMILT] Looking for any clues as to who Charles Smith was
    2. Kathleen Burnett
    3. Charles Smith is found in the Hamilton Co., TN U.S. Census in 1830. He was living most likely in the area of Hamilton County that is on the boarder of Walker Co., GA. The census gives his age as between 50 and 59. There is a female in the household between 30 and 39 and a very young boy (daughter? daughter-in-law?) I have not been able to find any information on Charles Smith before 1830 or after 1830. Living next to him is a James M. Smith, age 20 to 29, and several families away is a Layton Smith 30 to 39, William Smith 30 to 39 and a George Smith 30 to 39. Are they connected to Charles, don't know but would love to know.
