    1. [TNGREENE] Fwd: John and Sarah Davis (county court practices in settlements).
    2. Fellow Greene County Researchers: I have gone through the estate records I could find (settlements, inventories) for my Sexton, Horton, Marshall and Fortner ancestors in Greene County. FYI, DAR in Washington D.C. has microfilmed copies of many of these records (unindexed, some very hard to read..sigh) in the library there. This is where I was happy to find them, since my two trips through Greene County have all been on days when the library and courts were closed. In my cases, I found that clerks often listed as recipients the HUSBANDS only of daughters of the deceased, so I would suggest you investigate whether John Leain and Carter Milton were married to the daughters of John Davis. My interest was for my 3 g grandparents who died in the 1820s, 1830s, and beyond, so we had marriage records for most of the daughters. Another footnote is that we found name mistakes. For example, the clerk listed a male Armitrage (the name of a lawyer in the area) instead of Armstrong which was accurate, as a beneficiary of Isaac Horton's estate. I hope this helps you. The quitclaim deed, or an accompanying court order, however, should have included the wife's name I believe, if she was still alive. If she wasn't alive, I believe their children, not the husband should have signed the deed. This was all before community property, etc. etc. Good Luck! Janet (Baugh) Hunter In prior records, they have all been listed as children of John, but I am not convinced that John Leain and Carter Milton are children. They might possibly be grandchildren or some other relation. Their names were not listed in the records as John Leain "Davis" or Carter Milton "Davis", while the rest were listed as Davis. -----Original Message----- From: eawd47@aol.com To: sclevenger@iquest.net; TNGREENE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Sat, Apr 24, 2010 5:21 pm Subject: Re: [TNGREENE] John and Sarah Davis Hi Sarah, We have corresponded a long time ago. I don't really have any more information than I had at that time, but here is a summary of it: John Davis - birth unknown, died 1806 in Greene County, TN Sarah Davis - birth unknown, died about 1823 in Greene County, TN marriage date unknown In Greene County Court records, 23 June 1809, 6 people were listed as legatees, receiving $478 each: John Leain Fields Davis Patcy Davis Sarey Davis Carter Milton Jesse Davis The names are as they are listed in the records. In prior records, they have all been listed as children of John, but I am not convinced that John Leain and Carter Milton are children. They might possibly be grandchildren or some other relation. Their names were not listed in the records as John Leain "Davis" or Carter Milton "Davis", while the rest were listed as Davis. In 1811, John Lane appears as a resident of Sevier County, TN in a quitclaim deed. He is listed as an heir of John Davis and he gives up his claim to the land where the heirs of Fields Davis now live. In 1815, Patty Davis appears in land records with Jesse Davis as heirs of John Davis, deceased. I have not been able to find information on John Lane and Carter Milton (or hadn't when I searched last). I haven't done much research on the Davis family in a while. I know Gary Davis has been doing some land research and he might be able to clarify some issues. I have more on Jesse Davis and some on Fields, but not much on the others.
