Also check church records. In Sevier & Cocke Counties there where courthouse fires and I've had to be very creative in researching. A few years ago I bought some beautiful land in Cocke County. Since there was a courthouse fire, no land records really amount to anything. I was very lucky when I mentioned my property to an aged cousin. He related the property had been our ggggrandparents old homestead back in about 1830-58. I was thrilled to know after 150 years the decendants come home. The lady I got the property from, her son constant referred to the land as his mama's place. I wish I had a picture of his face when I told him my family settled it and his folks came along about 100 yrs. later. Now he doesn't say it was his mama's place.
