Sometimes a neighbor was the one who gave the information to the census taker--to save them that extra walk down the road--so don't always think that the census info was given by a primary source! I have no explanation. The 1850 census, being the first fully enumerated census, does have a lot of errors. I have seen many times where children in the household may actually have a different surname than the "head".
