    1. [TNGREENE] Help! Youngs, Lusters, Crumleys and Where is Brownstown?
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: stacisgarden1 Surnames: Young, Luster, Crumley, Brown, Johnston Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.tennessee.counties.greene/9373/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have waded through a sea of Crumleys, Browns and Johnstons but I'm paddling in circles when it comes to the Lusters and Youngs. I'm too far away to do first-hand research in Greene County, TN. I'm looking for the ancestors of William Luster and Catherine "Catsy" Young. Nancy Catherine Crumley Allender was the daughter of Lucinda Byce and Allen Crumley Born: 5 Jan 1848 in Green County, Tennessee. Died: 25 Jun 1902 in Cushman, Arkansas. Allen Crumley's parents were William Crumley was born 15 May 1823 in Green County, Tennessee, and died 21 Jun 1884 in Cushman, Arkansas and Nancy Luster was born 1 Nov 1824 in Green County, Tennessee, and died 25 Aug 1905 in High, Lamar County, Texas. Nancy Reed Luster Crumley was the daughter of William Luster and Catherine "Catsy" Young, William's second wife. We know that this is the same line of Crumleys of Frederick Co. VA/Berkeley Co. WV. They intermarried with the Brown and Johnston families of Winchester, VA. All of these families were involved with the Revolutionary War, either by providing supplies or as front line militia. >From a handwritten letter by Nancy's son, Thomas Atkins Crumley of Snyder, TX dated 8/13/1936 we know that: 1) His parents were Nancy Reed Luster and William Crumley. 2) They moved to Batesville, Independence Co, AR after the Civil War. 3) His grandparents were William Luster and Catsy Young of Greene Co, TN. He lists Tom Luster, Jenie Luster, wife of Moses Crumley, and Perry Luster as the children of William's first wife and Catsy's children as William, James, John, Amos, Nancy (his mother), and Matilda married Jessey Forrester. 4) James Oscar Young was the son of Catsy's brother, Dr. Young's and he was still living on the family homestead at Lick Creek, Greene Co., TN. Thomas tells the person he is writing to "write Perry Crumley and request for Young to help and Perry will see him." 5) Once again, the place known as Brownstown, TN came up. In "The Robert Fulton Crumley Family" compiled by Floyd Burney Crumley in 1978 (who I believe has since passed away) he confirms that Burney Crumley was the cousin of Lewis Allender (my grandmother's brother) and they lived in High, Lamar Co. TX. His father was Robert Fulton Crumley, son of Thomas Atkins Crumley and Mary Caroline Gambill of TN. Another family narrative from Texas that involves a Young lineage in TN is that of Dr. Hugh H. Young, "Two Texas Partiots", Volume 44, Number 1, Southwestern Historical Quarterly online, www.tsha.utexas.edu/publications/journals/shq/online/v044/n1/contrib_DIVL453_print.html In his very interesting first person narrative of his family's history, it states the following: 1) Dr. Hugh H. Young was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1870. 2) His Grandfather, General Hugh Franklin Young was born in Rockbridge County, VA, not far from the Natural Bridge (about 1804). His (Gen. Hugh F. Young's) great-grandfather, who was born in Ireland, killed an Indian who had murdered his only brother, so that fighting Indians came naturally to him. 3) There were 16 children in his grandfather's family and 8 in his father's. (I think this means that Hugh F. Young had 15 siblings and William H. Young had 7 siblings.) 4) Dr. Hugh Young's father, Gen. William Hugh Young (born 1838), left McKenzie College and "went to Nashville, where he lived with his uncle, Dr. John Young, a prominent physician who subsequently took an important part in politics. 5) At the age of 21, Gen. William appeared at his uncle, David Young's home in Staunton, VA, on his way to the University of Virginia. He met his future wife, Frances Kemper the neice of David Young's wife. He attended school with Frances' brother George Kemper and their mutual cousin Charles Kemper Young. 6) Gen. William personally selected his regiment that assembled at Dallas and organized into the 9th Texas Infantry. The regiment acquired it's early training at Little Rock, Arkansas, after which they joined the Confederate Army of Tennessee. Gen. William Hugh Young, at age 26, was the youngest Brigadier-General in the Confederate Army. He survived nearly all the great battles of the Army of Tennessee, including Shiloh. While covering the retreat of Gen. Hood's forces from Atlanta, Gen. William was in charge of capturing the fort above the Allatoona Pass. He was wounded and eventually caputred while retreating. "His captors thought him so valuable a prisoner that, although serverely wounded, he was carried over many miles of rough roads up to the top of Kennesaw Mt. Into the presence of General Sherman", who described their interview in his memoirs. Q. Is Dr. John Russom Young born 1808 and shown on the 1850 Greene Co. TN Census the same as the Dr. John Young that Gen. William Hugh Young studied with near Nashville? Would Nashville be the largest city for reference or were there two Dr. John Youngs? Dr. John R. Young (Jr.) is found on the Greene County, Tennessee 1850 Census: Household #1416 - John R. Young, male, age 42, born in Tennessee, occupation: Physician, value of real estate: 2000 David K. Fink, male, age 21, born in Tennessee, medical student Alexander D. McAalpin, male, age 77, born in Virginia, pauper Mima, female, age 67, born in Virginia, pauper Mary, female, age 38, born in Tennessee Nancy A., femle age 4 John, male , age 2 I've seen family trees that link this Catherine Young with the Weems family. The family of Dr. Hugh Young is a completely different line. With a name like Catherine Young, it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. I keep looking in VA and MD, but I haven't found any wills or documents listing a Catherine yet. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
