    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Maloney Malone Melone Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ihB.2ACI/4215.1.1 Message Board Post: Maloney is definitely a separate name in Irish genealogy, not just a mis-spelling of Malone. Maloney is an "Americanization" of O'Molony. Molony is from the Gaelic OMaoldhomaigh, which means "devoted to Sundays" i.e. devoted to the church. Molony is a County Clare name, where they were chiefs of Tulla, with the seat in Kiltannon. see "Learned Families of Thomond", also "Clans and Families of Ireland and Scotland", also "Your Irish Ancestors", also "Burkes Guide to Irish Country Houses". The ironic thing about this little corner of the world is that there are Malone, Melone, and Maloney all in one county at one time.
