Hi, I'm not sure if this is the William Brown that you are talking about, but I have a William Brown who married Elizabeth Hankins. William was born 1797. They had a son, John Hankins Brown who married Sarah Hendry. William died in 1864. I dont' think he served in the CW, but probably died by something related to the war. John Hankins Brown did die from serving. He died at Andersonville Prison. The Browns are not my primary line, the Hendrys are, but we do have a lot of Browns who marry into the Hendry family. Is this William Jotham's brother or son? I thought Jotham was born much earlier than 1797 or around that time. Tara Painter is my source for a lot of Brown information.
