I've found Jesse Payne in the 1900 and 1920 census and he listed Tennessee as the state his father was born in and listed he was born in North Carolina. There is some mystery about him and his family. My grandmother never met any of his family and she led us to believe that he was an orphan, with no family living. He died in 1930, my father was only 2 years old, so he never got to ask Jesse Payne about any family and none of the other children knew anything. Mama and I went to Greeneville a few years ago, went to the library and road the roads and looked at cemeteries. Jesse Payne did tell my grandmother that his father, John H. Payne, was a mason and was a master carpenter. We stopped by the Masonic Lodge in Greeneville but no one was there. We thought maybe he would be listed as a mason in the old books. Anyway, if you could help, it would be appreciated. Thank you again, Judy
