    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ihB.2ACI/4354.1 Message Board Post: I have a lot of Paynes on my mother's side of the family but do not find this name. Most of them were from WAshington County originally. But there was a line from NC that came to Greene Co., I'm told and oddly the names are very similar to names in my line. We have a lot of Jesse Paynes but my maternal grandfather was Joseph F. Payne, son of Alexander M. Payne and Sarah Isabella Beard. Alex was son of William G. Payne (1790-abt. 1837) and Sarah Elizabeth Greenway (1791-8/15/1837) m. abt.1809. Alex had a brother John H. Payne b. 1810 who married Mariah Unknown b. abt. 1808 and had at least 4 children but no known Jesse. They were Martha 1840, William L. 3//25/1841, James 1844, and John 1848. Many are buried in Earnest Cemetery in Washington Co. which is where I got some dates, but also got a lot of help from 3 genealogists in Washington Co. Try looking at their records.

    3. I have also seen the spelling of Payne\Paine intertwined within the line. Many times the individual who wrote a document used the phonic spelling. With accents and individuals unable to read and write this is how much confusion occured. I know 2 brother who arrived in the US about 50 years ago from Italy. One brother was very nervous and when asked his name he stated in broken English, La and that is what was added to the family name.
