Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ihB.2ACI/4205.1.1.3 Message Board Post: As far as I know, my maternal great, grandfather John Brown (who m. Annie Ford and had Mary Catherine Brown who m. Joseph F. Payne) is not part of the Jotham Brown line. I tried to email you once or twice in the past to see if you had any information but got no answer. Now you are responding to my message to someone else and I will answer your listed problems as best I can: Re No. 1. Jotham Brown who m. Margaret (Peggy) Maloney (and have side-by-side toombstones, and children you have listed), also married Phoebe Johnston, according to what I have. He married Phoebe on 10/8/1807 and their children were: 1. David E. b. ? d. 5/1/1843 m. 8/6/1795 1) Elizabeth Ann (Peggy) Craig, and m. 7/24/1799 2) Elizabeth Johnston whom you say is Mary (Polly). 2. John A. m. Elizabeth J. Nichols 3. William m. Martha Blair on 8/27/1811 4. Jane m. 10/20/1786 Christopher Cooper the lst 5. Phoebe m. John Willes 6. Mary m. William Stapleton 12/8/1803 7. Sylvanus Jotham m. Ruth Johnston 9/8/1794 8. Elizabeth m. John Willoughby 12/27/1899 9. Sylvaneous m. John Willes (who also m. Phoebe) 10.Lydia m. Aaron Crumley the lst 8/23/1814 and you say there were 2 more children: Jotham the II and Mirey, but my notes say that Jotham II was the son of Jotham I and Margaret (Peggy) Maloney, not Phoebe Johnston, and Jotham II m. Mary Polly McCurry 4/1/1824. Mirey was probably a nickname for Mary and I had a Mary listed but deleted her, thinking I was wrong to have 2 Mary's, but Mirey was probably the Mary who m. Wm Stapleton. Now, you say the children of Jotham I and Margaret (Peggy) Maloney were Robert, Hugh, John, James, Martha, and Rev. Alexander Brown. (So, just for verification, I am giving what I have on their children: 1. Jotham who m. Nancy Unknown. 2. Hugh who m. l) Sarah M. Samples, 2) Lucinda Stonecypher 3. Martha A. 1821-97) 4. Alexander 1823-93 m. Jane Babb 5. Johnny B. 1828-1906 m. Perthenia Neal 6. Robert 1808-92 m. Anna M. Babb 7. John 1813-59 m. Sarah Sally Woolsey 8. James 1815-57 m. Jane M. McAmis 9. William 10. Nancy Since Phoebe Johnston was born 1797 and Jotham I Brown was born abt. 1770 and married both Phoebe and Margaret (Peggy), do you agree that its possible that all these children by both Phoebe and Margaret are Jotham I's? And do you note that he did not duplicate any names of children except John???? But to complicate matters even further I have Jotham Brown b. 1783 Va d. 7/21/1859 at Roaring Fork, Greene Co. TN as having married 3/18/1819 Elizabeth (Polly) Johnston and these are their children: 1. Sarah b. 8/26/1826 d. 11/26/1910 2. Ruth 3. Amelia 4. Mary A. 5. Nancy 6. Nelly 7. James E. 8. Jotham Jotham I Brown was the son of David A. Brown I (b. 1750 d. 2/2/1808 m.1770 Lucy Unknown b. 1750 d. ? whose children were: 1. Jotham I b. abt. 1770 d. aft 1808 who m. l) Phoebe Johnston,2. Margaret (Peggy) Mahoney 2. David A. the 2nd b. abt. 1773 d. aft. 1/15/1843 m. 2/10/1808 to Elizabeth Mae (Betty) Unknown 3. William b. abt. 1773 d. bef. 1850 m. l0/15/1795 Catherine Sweet 4. Ann b. 10/14/1780 d. 5/17/1855 Indiana m. bef. 1817 Jacob Sands 5. Thomas G. lst b. 1781 m. Keziah Frazier 3/16/1802 6. Elizabeth b. abt. 1785 m. James Willoughby 3/16/1802 7. Mary (Polly) b. abt. 1785 m. John Mace 11/26/1808 and possibly m. William Babb and had Elizabeth b. 9/1/1809 (or else there were 2 Mary Polly's born abt 1785?) 8. John Wesley b. 1/27/1788 d. 12/18/1849 m. 1/7/1817 Margaret Kincheloe 9. Jane b. abt. 1790 m. 1/1/1810 James Poteet in Rhea Co. 10. Isabella b. 1793 d. 4/11/1867 Poland, Clay Co. Ind. m. 1/2/1823 to Nicholas Mace (probably brother of John). David A. Brown lst had Jotham Brown lst and I have listed his children with Phoebe Johnston and his children with Margaret (Peggy) Maloney. Jotham Brown lst had Jotham Brown II with wife Margaret (Peggy) Maloney, not with Phoebe, unless I'm wrong, which is entirely possible. Jotham II m. Mary Polly McCurry 4/1/1824. I do not have names of their children. Now. David E. Brown (not David A. Brown), who was the son of Jotham Brown lst and Phoebe Johnston, married Elizabeth Ann (Peggy) Craig, dtr of Benjamin Craig and had the follow- ing children: 1. David E. 2nd who m. Mary Unknown 2. James 3. Nancy m. Simeon Holder 3/9/1836 4. Polly B. (Mary) m. Solomon Thompson 5. Sylvanus m. Mary Carter 6. Martha 7. Phoebe B. m. Campbell Tucker 8. Jonathan M. (1819-43) 9. William m. Elizabeth Hankins and Lucinda Hankins 10. Joseph You say that David was also married to Nancy Ann Craig, which I suppose is entirely possible, since men often married sisters on those days. But you also say that they had a son named Jotham who m.Polly Johnston or Mary (Polly) Elizabeth Johnston. I find this to be very confusing, since the Jotham who m. Mary (Polly) Elizabeth Johnston was Jotham Ist, son of David A. Brown and Lucy Unknown--, not the son of David E. Brown and Elizabeth Ann (Peggy) Craig). Next you say that the children I associate with Jotham the 2nd really belong to Jotham Benjamin Bown, grandson of Jotham lst through Sylvanus Brown and Ruth Johnston so I want to give you want I have on Sylvanus and Ruth's children. First of all, they m. 9/8/1794 and Ruth was the daughter of Moses Johnston. Children were: 1. Elizabeth 2. John who m. Catherine Morrison 3. Lydia who m. William Crumley the 2nd 4. Mercy 5. William 6. Moses b. 1798 m. 7/21/1818 Saray Crumley 7. Harvey b. 2/10/1813 d. 12/9/1879 m. l) Nellie Unknown, 2) Eleanor Malone m. 7/24/1834 8. Alfred b. 1815 m. 1845 Mary Eakins 9. Mary As you can see by the above list, there was no Jotham Benjamin Brown listed as a son of Ruth Johnston and Sylvanus Brown--but I could be wrong, or rather, the person who gave me this could be wrong. I checked my entire Family Tree Maker for the name Jotham Benjamin Brown and did not find it. Next, you asked me about William Brown, son of Jotham lst, and who he married. It was Martha Blair m. 8/22/1811. I realize the Brown line can be very confusing because they often used the same names. Since this isn't my line as Browns as far as I know, I can not vouch for the above in- formation, although I do have more. I hope this helps you and anyone else researching Browns in Greene Co. and Washington Co. TN.
