    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: marlysjp Surnames: Carter, Gilton Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.tennessee.counties.greene/9390/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have the death certificate of Nancy Carter Gilton (wife of Thomas Gilton/Jilton). Nancy and Thomas are my husband's ggg-grandparents. Thomas Gilton was a blacksmith, b. in Virginia about 1816, and appears in the Censuses in Greene Co. from 1850-1870. According to the death cert, Nancy Carter was born on January 11, 1835 in Greene County, Tennessee and died July 24, 1915 in Washington Co., TN. Her parents are listed as William Carter and Fannie Carter. That implies that Fannie's maiden name was also Carter, but it's also possible that whoever gave the info didn't know her maiden name, and just gave her married one. I haven't traced William in the censuses--I think there's one in 1840 in Greene Co., but he doesn't have a girl child of the right age to be Nancy in the house. Fannie, however, appears in as Head of Household in 1850 (as Fanny Carter) and 1860 (as Francis Carter). She was born in about 1801 or 1802 (48 in 1850, 59 in 1860), either in Tennessee or Virginia. Besides Nancy, she had at least two other children: Henry, born about 1836-1838 (age 14 in 1850 and 22 in 1860) in Tennessee; and James, born about 1841-1843 (age 9 in 1850 and 17 in 1860). Henry in 1860 lives next door to his mother with his family, including a wife named Sarah (age 30) and three children: Noah (4), Hugh (3), and James (11 months). Is anyone working on this Carter family? I would love to learn more about William and Fannie Carter, and whether Nancy had other siblings besides Henry and James. Thanks!
