"In 1791 he lived Burke Co., NC so I have wondered how he knew Sparling. I have wondered if he lived Md. between 1756 and 1770 where there is a blank in my original records of him. "Kay in Tennessee " ======================================================= Hello Kay, Knowing how families often migrated together, and how they tended to "stick together", it is possible your John HINDS was acquainted with the BOWMAN family in Maryland. It is possible that John did live in MD for a while, 1756-1770, OR that there were some ties between the HINDS and BOWMAN families later in Greene Co., Tennessee. Now, about your HINDS family. Wow! My daughter-in-law's mother was a HINDS. We've traced them back to about 1840 in Roane Co., Tennessee, and I wonder if your HINDS are related to our HINDS. One thing to remember is how the counties in Tennessee were formed when doing research. Roane Co., to where our HINDS first migrated, was originally a part of Greene Co. 1776-Washington District of NC was formed 1777-Washington Co. NC was formed 1783-Greene Co., NC, was formed from part of Washington Co. 1792-Knox Co., NC, was formed from part of Greene Co. 1796-Knox Co., NC, became Knox Co., TN 1801-Roane Co, TN, was formed from Knox Co. This is just to illustrate that when someone was said to have been in "Greene Co." in 1791, that doesn't mean that the actual place where he was located is now located in Greene Co. I think with your John HINDS, he may have lived in the part of early Greene Co., that became Knox Co. You might find records in Knox Co., or even in Roane Co. It's always to take into consideration the county formations when searching for records. Where you "think" the records should be is not always the place where they actually are. I would love to know about your HINDS families in Tennessee to see if they tie into our family. Especially since we haven't been able to get back past Joseph HINDS, born about 1840. Possibly related to your line. I believe the Bowmans were German Also the name Sparling may have been changed to Spurling along the way." Hi Kathleen, Yes, there was a Sparling BOWMAN, Sr., b. about 1752 in MD, d. 15 Jul 1839 in Greene Co. His son, Sparling BOWMAN, Jr., b. about 1781 in PA, d. about 1860 in Greene Co. Yes, this BOWMAN line descends from Johannes "John" BAUMAN/BOWMAN, b. abt 1711 in Bavaria, Germany. He settled in the Salisbury Hundred, near present day Williamsport, MD, before 1730. John's line is the one that ended up in Washington, Sullivan, Greene Counties, TN, in the late 1700's. The name "Sparling" as a given name comes from John's wife, Catherine SPARLING. Her maiden surname was given to her 5th child, Sparling BOWMAN, who ended up in Greene Co., TN. From him, several descendants had either a first name or middle name of "Sparling". I've never run across any of the BOWMAN families in Greene Co., TN, who had descendants named "Spurling". Not saying it didn't happen, but I would be more inclined to think that IF that name were found in official records, it was a misspelling error by some clerk. The given name "Sparling" shows up all over Greene Co. There was a "Sparling BOWMAN", son of Kennedy BOWMAN; a "Sparling Jackson BOWMAN", son of Andrew BOWMAN and Mary CRUM; then there was a "James Sparling CRUM", who was the grandson of Mary "Polly" BOWMAN, daughter of Sparling BOWMAN, Sr.; a "Sparling B. HARMON", son of Elizabeth "Betsy" BOWMAN, also a daughter of Sparling BOWMAN, Sr.; and, finally, from what records I have, a "Sparling WADDLE", son of Rachel BOWMAN, also a daughter of Sparling BOWMAN, Sr. Whew! It seems that just about all the descendants of old Sparling BOWMAN, Sr., gave the name "Sparling" to one of their descendants. I've even found a "Daniel Sparling BOWMAN" in Rutherford Co., TN, who was the Grand-Nephew of Sparling BOWMAN, Sr.! When those people found a name they liked, it seems they latched onto it and kept it going. As to the surname "SPARLING", I have no idea what it was in Bavaria, Germany, but it became "SPARLING" very quickly in America. Probably a year or two after that for indexes to be available from Ancestry.com, and maybe another year or two for images. The 72 years delay was implemented to protect the privacy of living persons, when that was about the maximum lifespan. Given that lifespans are much longer now, and considering the privacy and identity theft issues that releasing the 1940 census might involve for still living persons, I expect that in the next couple of years, Congress may debate and act to tack on at least another 10 years to the release date for census info, if not more.
