This man you are showing lived in Hawkins County and COULD be the Benjamin Brown whose son married the daughter of John Sevier, our first governor in TN. I just don't know who this man is. Benjamin Brown that I researched lived in Washington and then Johnson County until his death. He moved to TN from VA. He did not have a son named Rufus. To make the census transcription project at http://files.usgwarchives.org/tn/greene/census/1860/ even more useful, I made a GEDCOM file out of it. This free file can be imported into any genealogy software (open a new folder!) and read by a variety of utilities. This is a free finding aid for use with the transcription project. Tennessee Historians Search For Civil War Relics State historians plan to hit every county in Tennessee as part of an effort to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Collecting Tennessee History Moore says this project is partly about authenticating true artifacts from forgeries. It's also meant to collect Tennessee stories of the Civil War that didn't make the history books. http://www.vpr.net/npr/126282187/

He mentions his wife "Marget", daughters Marget, Jane, Martha Culp, Grandson William and a Daniel Hunt. ---------------- However, the will of Margaret Baly, who mentioned her only daughter, Sarah, was dated 1805 and in Greene Co, TN. But if she were the Marget, from the Claudius will, she would have a daughter, Martha, in 1805, who was married to Culp in 1816. Also Claudius does not mention Sarah, and Margaret would be dead in 1816. ------------------- There is a marriage record of Ephraim Bailey who married Margaret Johnson in 1790 in Greene Co, but I have found no other mention of Ephraim Bailey anywhere else in Greene co (i.e. tax lists, wills, court records, etc) I would like to demonstrate that Ephraim was the father of Sarah, but can find no supporting evidence. One must also be aware that Claudius Bailey married Margaret Johnston, supposedly in Orange Co, NC (I have a will of Charles Johnston dated 9 June 1789 in Orange Co, who mentions his son-in-law "Chaldous Bailey") So there are contemporary records that indicate Claudius Bailey married Margaret Johnston before 1789 and Ephraim Bailey married Margaret Johnson in 1790 (see Greene Co marriages). In the meantime, Margaret Bailey dies in 1805, leaves an only daughter, Sarah, and her will is witnessed by William McCamish, who will be the father-in-law of "my" Sarah Bailey when she marries in 1807. Who is Sarah Bailey's mother or father? I do have all these wills and more from people who I suspected might shed some light on this problem. I found an excellent source for wills in this area of the country, from "STRICTLY BY NAME" at http://www.copies1918.com/ Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Fellow Greene County Researchers: I have gone through the estate records I could find (settlements, inventories) for my Sexton, Horton, Marshall and Fortner ancestors in Greene County. FYI, DAR in Washington D.C. has microfilmed copies of many of these records (unindexed, some very hard to read..sigh) in the library there. This is where I was happy to find them, since my two trips through Greene County have all been on days when the library and courts were closed. In my cases, I found that clerks often listed as recipients the HUSBANDS only of daughters of the deceased, so I would suggest you investigate whether John Leain and Carter Milton were married to the daughters of John Davis. My interest was for my 3 g grandparents who died in the 1820s, 1830s, and beyond, so we had marriage records for most of the daughters. Another footnote is that we found name mistakes. For example, the clerk listed a male Armitrage (the name of a lawyer in the area) instead of Armstrong which was accurate, as a beneficiary of Isaac Horton's estate. I hope this helps you. The quitclaim deed, or an accompanying court order, however, should have included the wife's name I believe, if she was still alive. If she wasn't alive, I believe their children, not the husband should have signed the deed. This was all before community property, etc. etc. Good Luck! Janet (Baugh) Hunter In prior records, they have all been listed as children of John, but I am not convinced that John Leain and Carter Milton are children. They might possibly be grandchildren or some other relation. Their names were not listed in the records as John Leain "Davis" or Carter Milton "Davis", while the rest were listed as Davis. -----Original Message----- From: eawd47@aol.com To: sclevenger@iquest.net; TNGREENE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Sat, Apr 24, 2010 5:21 pm Subject: Re: [TNGREENE] John and Sarah Davis Hi Sarah, We have corresponded a long time ago. Adam's son John Wesley SHERRILL, is listed as representitive of the estate of Adam & Ellen SHERRILL. As John Wesley Sherrill was only 12 years old when his parents died, this "gap" in the estate settlement was not too unusual.
