Hi, I'm not sure if this is the William Brown that you are talking about, but I have a William Brown who married Elizabeth Hankins. William was born 1797. They had a son, John Hankins Brown who married Sarah Hendry. William died in 1864. I dont' think he served in the CW, but probably died by something related to the war. John Hankins Brown did die from serving. He died at Andersonville Prison. The Browns are not my primary line, the Hendrys are, but we do have a lot of Browns who marry into the Hendry family. Is this William Jotham's brother or son? I thought Jotham was born much earlier than 1797 or around that time. Tara Painter is my source for a lot of Brown information. She is a descendant of John and Sarah (Hendry) Hankins. Renaee

Your James Oliver, Greene County, Tennessee married to Rachel Falls is of great interest to me. In the 1850 Census Johana Falls was living with them. She is the mother, or so I believe, of Isabella Falls who married John Paxton in Greeneville, Tennessee in 1854. James Oliver is listed as a witness to their wedding. And in subsequent censuses and until she died I believe Johana lived with John and Isabella. I assume she was a widow from her husband Frank. Where in Virginia are the Olivers from? Perhaps it will be a clue as to where in Virginia I can find John Paxton as a young boy. They may have been members of a group that moved from Virginia to Tennessee together. Any help you can be will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jan Bultema kbultema@comnetcom.net

James Weston's brother must have been Harvey Weston, who married Mary Ann Brown. The family migrated with the Christopher Cooper Jr. family in 1851 to Sullivan County, MO." Mary Ann Brown was the daughter of Mirey's brother Sylvanus, so she was Mirey's niece. Jim Slone

I am interested in the Pates that move from Greene Co into the Huntsville, Madison Co AL area. One of them in 1817 is Stephen (his will) and he mentions friend Mathew. There is an 1808 case in Greene where a Mathew Pate attacks another man in a knife fight. He sells his 550 acres (this is testified to later by his adult son Jeremiah). The case is given to a higher court in Washington Co. In Green Co documents later it is said that Mathew "is gone" from this co. Whatever that could mean! The 550 acres that Joseph has (and there is a Joseph Pate in Madison Co @1809) could possibly be the 550 acres that Mathew has to sell in 1808. I keep looking at Greene Co because my Henderson Clark (bn1797)'s uncle is there. The Uncle is also Henderson Clark bn 1784. The Clarks seem to have land on or around the Nolichucky. When Henderson Clark (bn1797) marries Elizabeth Pate (bn1800 parents unknown) in Madison Co, Al in 1819, the Stephen Pate will has s! aid in 1817, my eldest son James, son in law James Milliken and 5 underaged children. He also mentions my friend, Mathew Pate. James Pate, Jane Milliken Pate (married 1st 1814 to Stephen Pate and then to his brother Mathew Pate-both of these men are thought to be bn @1790), her remarriage to Mathew Pate 1830, her son Andrew Jackson Pate bn1815 (Madison Co, AL) and my Henderson Clark and his wife Elizabeth Ann Pate are firmly in Dyer Co, TN. (AND to make it all more interesting, Andrew Jackson the President is said to be a house guest in Madison while AJ Pate is born and is considered a "cousin". The Hermitage confirms he is in the Huntsville, Al area that week.) Thanks for your help and if there are any good clues on the Clark Pate relationship, I truly would appreciate your help!!! The info thaat was given to me said that William Babb married "MARY BROWN". But the Mirey makes more sense. I do know that their daughter, Elizabeth Babb, was my G Great Grandmother. She traveled to SW MO. with the wagon train led by my G Great Grandfather, James Weston. They went to Barry Co. MO. while his brother, went to Sullivan CO. MO. with the Coopers. He also married a Brown, but an Aunt of Mirey's I believe. True? This was sent to me. from a letter by Edgar Weston, descendant of James Weston: "My great great grandfather James Weston born 7 Mar 1807 Greene County, TN m. Elizabeth Babb, born 1 Sept. 1810 Greene County, TN. About the time that they were married, James and Elizabeth Babb Weston along with William Babb born 1786 TN and wife Massa, Mercy, Mary Brown Babb born 1785 VA, moved from Lick Creek Greene County, TN to Hawkins County, TN about 3 miles from the Virginia line. The date was 1827. William Babb became Justice of the Peace in Hawkins County, TN. He was a Cabinet Maker. James Weston was a Wagon Maker and Blacksmith. He also did farming. A large group of SW Virginia and NE Tennessee people began moving to SW Missouri 8n 1831 and later the Trail of Tears or Cherokee Removal from East Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia brought many soldiers, freighters (? spelling), wagon makers, blacksmiths, etc. through Barry County, Missouri, down the old Indian Trail. They went back home and many moved to SW MO and some Babbs came on the Trail of Tears and returned to E. Tennessee in 1836. In the spring of 1851 - 12 or 13 wagons led by my ggg father, James Weston came to Barry Co. MO and settled. He located in South Barry Co. Mo and established a farm and built a blacksmith shop at a crossroads about 2 miles from his farm. Early in 1858 the Butterfield Stage and mail line to California improved the old Indian Trail and cut trees to widen it for stage coach travel and the Butterfield Stage US Mail began in 1858. It passed less than 2 miles from my ggg father James Weston's blacksmith shop. A stage stand to furnish horses, stagecoach and harness repair, an Inn to feed....." .........Jim Sloan!, I don't know who wrote that, he must be a cousin also. But I am also happy to meet annd greet you. I hope to attend the next Brown Family Reunion. Thanks again, I will be out of state without a PC for a week, I bet my mail box will be full. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ihB.2ACI/4205.1.1.2.2 Message Board Post: Hi Candy, Well, let me see if I can confuse the issue further for you. According to the Brown research records I received at the 2001 Reunion, William Babb married Mirey Brown, daughter of Jotham Brown, Sr. and Phoebe Johnston Brown. Quoting from a research paper distributed at the Reunion: "From the Montgomery County, Virginia court records – Deed Book C – page 326: May 16, 1800 – the following heirs of Jothem Brown, then deceased, conveyed 104 acres lying in that county, on Terry’s Creek, a branch of the Little River to Benjamin Craig of the same county. The heirs named on the deed as follows: Wife, Phoebe Brown, Christopher Cooper, Salvanes (Sylvanous) Brown, John Willes, David Brown, John Brown, Mary Brown, Lydia Brown, Elizabeth Brown, Jothem Brown, Mirey Brown and William Brown. From this instrument we have the probable children of Jothem Brown Sr. It would appear at this time only two daughters were married, one to Christopher Cooper, her name Jane, and one who married John Willes. Additional research distributed at the Reunion indicates that Mirey Brown married William Babb on 5 November 1807 in TN. If this is your ancestor (and it sounds like it is) she was indeed a sister of the Jotham Brown who married Margaret Maloney, but we believe her parents were Jotham Brown, Sr. and Phoebe Johnston. If so, you are my distant cousin, and I'm very happy to meet you! Who has the right answers? We may never know. This at least is one version that seems to make sense. And you sure have a lot of Brown cousins in Greene Co.! Jim Slone
