Directions are: From the corner of Democrat Road and McDonald Road (Rt 348), go 2.2 miles until you see a gate on the left of the road. (This is .2 miles past 2052 Democrat Road). Lash Walker at 1370 Democrat Road has the key to the gate. Once you enter the pasture, the cemetery is about a mile from the gate. Follow the road until you come to a cabin. Continue following the road behind the cabin and up the hill. After the second sharp curve to the left there is currently a small clearing. The cemetery is close to the left side of the road enclosed in a fence. The fence is very old and partially destroyed. There are many field stones and unmarked graves.

Ransom was born about 1752, probably in Virginia, and died about 1804 in Brunswick County, VA--his will was made in Nov 1803 and proved Oct 1804. 5 Sep 1772 he married Elizabeth COMAN in York County, VA. She was born about 1754 and died about 1813 in Brunswick County, VA. Together they had 7 children: John Harwood (24 Apr 1773-28 Sep 1850, m. Sela LIGHTFOOT & Sarah BRASWELL); William (27 Oct 1776-2 May 1826, m. Fannie Lucinda BALLEW); Peter Ransome (1778-??, m. Sara JAMES); Susannah R (abt 1780-bef 1840; m. Richard MOORE); Elizabeth H (abt 1780-abt 1857, m. George WILLIAMS); Beverly (25 Sep 1785-1 May 1873, m. Nancy RAGSDALE); and Samuel (Jun 1787-Sept 1855, m. Nancy JAMES). John and William stayed in Virginia. Peter and Samuel moved to Tennesse, Beverly and Elizabeth moved to Missouri. I have yet to trace Susannah. Ransom's parents were Richard FOSTER (abt 1725-Dec 1794, Surry County, VA) and Susannah ??. (It seems to be accepted that she was Susannah RAND, but no one has been able to prove this. I believe she was probably a RANSOM since this name is used for many generations and RAND is never used. So far, I haven't found proof for either version.) Richard and Susannah had three children mentioned in Richard's will: Ransom, Peter, and an unnamed daughter who had died and left a daughter named Susannah CLARK. I have been trying to confirm parents for Elizabeth COMAN, but at this point only have working theories. Hope this helps. I have quite a bit on the descendents of Richard and Susannah that I would be glad to share with other interested parties. I am a descendent of Beverly FOSTER and Nancy RAGSDALE so have more on that line, but have information on several of the other children as well.

Lamb or Hamm, Ham, or Hamn that may have come up missing from your family about 1850 to 1870. Many years later he made a deathbed confession to killing a man in Tennessee, changing his name and fleeing to Texas. Circumstances are unknown. He married Sarah E. Jowers, born in Mississippi. It is unknown if they married there or after he arrived in Texas. Information from an 1880 census shows that he was a carpenter by trade. He was born in Tennessee <1833> and his father was born in North Carolina, his mother was born in Tennessee. James was my great great grandfather and I would appreciate any information on his real name and the family that he left behind.

On your left hand side of the road at some point you will see Ottway Road and a big Methodist Church. That's not it. Go 1 1/2 miles further and you will see Union Road and go left onto it and look for a little white church called Union Freeway Church. Go past the church a little ways and look for a big pasture and a hill in the middle of it. It just looks like a patch of green trees and bushes. That's the cemetery and there is a gate on the road near a parking area. Be careful as the ground is uneven and you could twist your ankle. You can't actually get into the cemtery because of the briar bushes.
