Surnames: Bird Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ihB.2ACI/4290 Message Board Post: This query goes back to when this was the Free State of Franklin. Jonathan Bird was said to be born here, in either 1777 or 1783. I would like to find out who his parents were. I have found the names of three possibilities: Amos Bird a magistrate in the first group of settlers, John Bird, Joseph Bird. All three were listed in the first county tax list for Greene County. I obtained this information from "The Overmountain Men" by Pat Alderman. Jonathan Bird married Margaret Brandon in NC, and moved to Alabama. He died in Titus Co. Texas 1850. I hope someone may have this information. Thank you, Donna

Osiller Ellison married Henry Tarrant and one of their daughters, Rebecca, married a Joseph McCurry. All this is pretty well documented in Greene County records. I know nothing of Rhea families or other subjects addressed.

Checked Cross Anchor records again for Joy but didn't find anything. However, he could have been buried there after the work for these records was done. That was late 1960's to possibly early 1970's. There are lots of Malones buried there and Nina probably belonged to some of them. I'm wondering if you have any idea what area of Greene County your grandparents lived in. There are lots of little communities there and thought you might remember hearing anything like this mentioned - it might help narrow down who Nina's parents were. When I'm working on my Malones, I will keep this in mind & let you know if I come up with a connection. If you come up with any further information, let me know.

He was a tailor in Rheatown and Greeneville and they moved to northwest MO after the Civil War. I have more info on this line if it connects with yours and would be to send further info.

I was also curious about the squirrel scalps until I read somewhere that squirrels were so abundant in the uncleared lands of the pioneer settlers, destroying their crops, etc., the practice of accepting squirrel scalps as payment for taxes was developed in an effort to reduce the squirrel population. I am also working on Brittons and McCurrys in Greene County. If you are interested in comparing notes, let me know.
