    3. I appreciate very much anyone who maintains a genealogy mailinh list or web site. In general here's always more criticism than praise for their volunteer efforts. So thanks Bridget, Jim Rader, Claude Ferguson, and the many many others who have inventories cemeteries, transcribed census records, and all the many other documents posted on the interet. For anyone interested, the Bright Hope ledgers is now at Claude's web site http://www.kiva.net/~jeskewic/brighthope.html I do have a question or two that I hope someone can answer for me. How is RootsWeb managed? It seems that Ancestry.com is having more and more of a control - for lack of another appropriate word - over information available at RootsWeb. I realize that administering such a comprehensive site is a monumental task, but it's my understanding that RootsWeb was created as a free service and that in the past contributions have been asked for to pay for the use of servers and to maintain equipment, but it seems to me that advertising is appearing and the the recently appearing OTHER MATCHES column on the search results pages refers researchers to Ancestry web pages where information is available to members only. I'd just like to know how much control Ancestry has at RootsWeb now. Will individual gedcoms eventually be accesible only to those who have paid annual dues to Ancestry? How much longer will it be before we have to pay annual dues to gain access to public records? I for one am a senior citizen on a fixed income and cannot afford to pay for access to public records even if those records have been gathered by someone else? Am I the only one with questions like this? Bob Wallace

    1. [TNGREENE] Former Greene County page or Site
    2. Joyce G. Reece
    3. I'm not sure I can give you the techincal aspects of it but Ms. Schneider had volunteered to host the site. I have been told that while it might not be ethical to remove the site from USGenWeb that, in all respects, no one could do anything about it. She will have to remove all references to the fact that it is a USGenweb site since she will no longer be affiliated with them. Someone else will now have the option to build and maintain a web site for Greene County...I'd hope it would be residents of the county so they could tap into the resources needed to do it. Ms. Schneider may have good cause for moving the information...she may not...we may never know. She will probably have to remove the re-direct page if she doesn't have permission to have moved the page. Rootsweb, basically, furnishes unlimited space for some of the networks such as the American Local History Network and the AGHP. USGenWeb has some of their own servers, although some sites were still on Rootsweb's servers. I think, in many ways, it depends on how she obtained the information she posted on the site. For instance, on our site www.rootsweb.com/~tnmcmin2 (an American Local History Network site) we are being allowed to tap into the resources of our local Historical Society's library/resources. If she did all the work she may feel justified in 'owning' the work. Our page is being maintained by us but much of the data is being completed by volunteers who are being kind enough to transcribe information. In this aspect I and my co-hostesses do not own that particular information....we simply maintain the site. On the other hand some of the information is our own work so who's to say that we should just 'give it away' to anyone who might take over the site. Perhaps it's an individuals decision. Frankly, and this is just my opinion, I think USGW's leadership could do better than what they are doing when it comes to determining what their website's hosts guidelines should be. There are people in our county, me for one, who was going to a lot of trouble to get information transcribed for the internet just to have the information ignored by the host for genweb. After about 9 mos. to a year of emailing the 'powers that be' I decided that they really didn't care if the county site improved or not so we applied for our county's ALHN site. It has been a success. We have had almost 6500 hits, on our links page, since April 22, '03. You can visit www.usgenweb.org to find addresses for the Board of Directors, etc. for USGW if you want to contact them with questions/statements. Joyce Gaston Reece ----- Original Message ----- From: ReynoldsWrites2@aol.com To: TNGREENE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, September 17, 2003 6:18 PM Subject: [TNGREENE] Former Greene County page or Site This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ihB.2ACI/4302 Message Board Post: The former Greene County page or 'Site' which genealogy researchers were used to seeing for the past 7 years and which was hosted by Bridgett Schneider has been removed from Usgenweb.org and is now at the following URL: http://www.genealogyforyou.com/usa/tennessee/greene Bridgett told me that the site is exactly as it was before except that it is no longer with Usgenweb.org but another server. She also said the format for the Greene County Archives has been changed by someone else, making it more difficult to find things. Bridgett said that she has redirects on the main pages that folks usually visit on the site and claims the site is picked up by 90% of the search engines. She recommends book-marking the main page. Can anyone tell me how it is that a host of a web site can just leave and take the web site with her/him? Doesn't the information belong to the people of Greene County, since it came from their records???? And is the host of a county web site paid by Usgenweb, or does she act voluntarily? How is she/he selected to handle all material for a county? 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ihB.2ACI/4302.1.1 Message Board Post: My message was merely an attempt on my part to understand what is really going on and how the system works, nothing in my message was a personal expression of outrage at you for moving "your" own site. You took all of the records from Greene County that you say was 90% due to your own gather- ing and moved to another server. Right? And you said you begged others to contribute but no one wanted to. You admit that the information on the site is public inform-ation and that Usgenweb is an All Volunteer project with no one getting paid. Right? So apparently you volunteered to be the Host for Greene County, Tennessee. Right? And you did all the hard work of gathering information because of having deep personal roots in Greene County. Right? And you say you wanted to do something to help others research. So I ask, how is it helping others who were used to seeing your fine work, to suddenly find it missing??? And many would not know the name of the new place you took the information to. And to confuse me further, you say that the site I originally complained about being changed was the Usgenweb Archives site. I don't believe I was complaining but stating a fact, that the records that used to be on the Greene County page were and are now in the Archives, and my puzzlement over why they were moved. I was unaware of the information you have provided--that you personally dug out most of the information on the Greene County page from public records and got little help from any one else. Nor was I aware that you felt so unappreciated. I am just a curious seeker who wants to know how things work. I recall asking you long ago how things get put into the Archives section of Usgenweb, whether there were certain dates that were required, and you didn't know. As you say, many Hosts don't live in the counties that they 'host;' I knew that. I didn't know that they were all volunteers and I bet a lot of people reading this didn't either. So your information has been most informative. Your statement: "I tried my best for the researchers of Greene County, and this is what I get in return; thanks a bunch." bothers me a lot because there was no personal attack on you and none was intended. But I am still puzzled. If you were a volunteer, and did most of the work on the Greene County page your- self, and wanted to help others reseach, wouldn't it have been kinder to leave the information behind when you left? On behalf of myself and many others, I want to thank you for all the work you did as an unpaid volunteer and I'm sorry you felt so unappreciated. I am a member of the Greene County Genealogical Society and they also do a lot of work for the researchers in Greene County, and I'm sure they also appre- ciate what you did.

USGenWeb does NOT pay for my site, nor any other site at this time (the national organization, nor the state organization). I *can* take the site with me because it is my site, 90% of the information was gathered by me, and I put it on the web. I used to ask folks for contributions, actually beg for them, but no one wanted to contribute. The information on the site is public information, it doesn't "belong" to anyone specifically, but everyone. If everyone will look on this message board under the dropdown menu labeled "classifications" -- all wills, deeds, bios, obits, etc, etc. etc. are still available. Nothing has been removed that was contributed to this board. Why are you so outraged with me moving my own site? The site you originally complained that was changed was the USGenWeb Archives site. I have nothing to do with the those changes, I don't handle any of the information that comes in there, and you will have to take your complaints to the TN USGenWeb ARCHIVES host, not me. I tried my best for the researchers of Greene County, and this is what I get in return. Thanks a bunch. Why did I originally take on the Greene County TNGenWeb site? Because my roots or so deep in that county that I wanted to do something to help others research. My ancestors were there when it was created, and my parents were the first to leave the area. Just because I don't live there doesn't mean a thing. *MOST* USGenWeb County Hosts don't live in the county they host. Bridgett
