    1. [TNGREENE] John Harmon b. 1807, son of Christian
    2. Robert Wallace
    3. Does anyone have any evidence to indicate the John Harmon b. 1807 who married Magdalene Cobble is the same John Harmon b. 1807, son of Christian and Mary Snider? Christian did sell property in the Midway way area to my John, and my John named one of his sons Christian. Is this circumstantial evidence of their relationship? Since I can't find any other possible parents of my John Harmon b. 1807 (my great great grandfather), I'm inclined to believe that Christian is his father. John and Magdalene were my great great grandparents, and like Christian Harmon and Mary Snyder were members of Sinking Spring Lutheran Church and are buried in the church's cemetery. The church's baptism records (that I've seen) do not show a baptism of my John. When did Christian and Mary leave Greene Co.? Can anyone answer this one for me? Bob Wallace

    1. [TNGREENE] Smelcer/Smelser Family
    2. leneta Ingalls
    3. Someone recently submitted a post on Smelser family from Greene County, TN. Somehow I accidentally erased the message before I read it. My wife's gg grandmother is Susannah Smelcer Guin that married Patrick M. Guin in Sept. 1850. I haven't researched that family so I was very interested in the post. I believe Susannah's father is Joseph Smelser. There seems to be 2 spellings of Smelcer/Smelser and I don't know if they are two different families. I know the spelling of Guin has about 6 different spellings and they are all of the same family. Please get back with me on the Smelsers. Bob in Oregon [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>

    1. [TNGREENE] Esther, Rachel, and Susanna Horn
    2. KERRY C MC*GRATH
    3. Looking for the names of the parents, not necessarily one set, of Esther, Rachel and Susanna Horn. All were born in the early part of the 19th cent, ca. 1805-1815. Census enumerations suggest that Esther and Rachel were born in North Carolina. All married in Greene County Tn. Susanna Horn married a Squibb. Esther Horn also married a Squibb. Possibly the same Esther Horn married Gravenor Likins. Rachel Horn married William Likins, Gravenor's brother, ca. 1842. This was William's second marriage, his first was to Sarah Squibb, brother of the husbands of Susanna and Esther. Susanna and Esther(s?) apparently were dead by 1860. Rachel moved with her husband, William Likins, to what is now Greene County, Missouri in 1843. Any help in identifying the parents, siblings, birthplaces of these three woman would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Kerry McGrath

I sent the correct list to the Greene Co list yesterday. You wrote: -William and James Kilgore are listed as cousins. James Kilgore married Samuel's cousin Jean (dau of John Henderson and Charlotte Miller). William was listed as his father. James could have also had a brother named William. Also, Jean could have have sons named either James or William. This is incorrect. William Kilgore s/o Charles married Jean/Jane Henderson d/o John Henderson Sr. James s/o William & Jane Henderson was still living in 1843 when baptism for William & James Kilgore occurred. I believe Samuel must have referred to William Kilgore's brother James Kilgore who died in 1824 who would have been dead before Samuel left for MO. James Kilgore married Peggy Walker in 1809 Greene Co TN. I can understand that Samuel Henderson might have named William Kilgore his cousin because of the marriage of Jane Henderson to William Kilgore (presuming John Henderson Sr. was the b/o James died 1793) but why James Kilgore who married Peggy Walker d/o Anderson Walker? No connection there unless there's a kinship that we can't see. Three of John Henderson Sr.'s children married Kilgores: Samuel Henderson M: Sarah Kilgore 1800 Greene Co TN; Lydia Henderson M: John Kilgore (died 1848 Greene Co TN) 1800 and Jane Henderson married William Kilgore 1796 Greene Co TN! . William Kilgore and Samuel Henderson s/o James seemed to have had a friendship because they were listed on several deeds together involving James Henderson's estate. Several years ago, Louise McPherson (an excellent researcher) sent me a list of the baptism's of Samuel Henderson that she'd received from another researcher-Harper. However, that list apparently contained some errors. Samuel Henderson did NOT baptize John Henderson uncle. A Samuel W. Henderson s/o John Henderson & Elizabeth Wilson baptized a John Henderson whom he named as his uncle. Harper's list also claimed that Samuel Henderson had not baptized his father-but that is incorrect. Revised list from source, shows that he did in fact baptize his father, James. If you'd like the list again. Please email me at [email protected] Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Samuel seems to have used current married names (for instance, he baptized his mother as Hannah Tallent). So, I've tried to look through them to see how they group together: -Samuel and J/G or M Henderson are James' parents. Sollars would refer to one of Hannah's parents. -Mary Henderson is his wife. -He refers to Uncle Wakins and Abijah Flower, to whom he says he is nephew. No idea how to track those. -Mary Henderson, Thomas Henderson, and William Henderson seem to go together; as if Mary is mother to Thomas and William. Henderson would be her married name, so she would be married to James' brother -- or possibly to the brother of the grandfather, Samuel. -John and Samuel Henderson are his father's (James) brothers. My records indicate they married Charlotte Miller and Lucy Rickman, respectively. I don't know which Henderson was married to Mary and father to Thomas and William. -"Uncle" Chapman and James and Sophia Chapman seem to go together. It's hard to tell if they are connected to Thomas and Mary Crawford just below. The only Chapman I could find was William Chapman who married Elizabeth Henderson (dau of John Henderson and Charlotte Miller). -Thomas and Mary Crawford also appear to go together (and you have a marriage record for them). I see no reliable way to connect them. -William and Elizabeth Stewart are listed as cousins. Samuel did have a cousin Elizabeth, who married William Chapman. I don't know if these things are related. Maybe Elizabeth married William Stewart after William Chapman? -William and James Kilgore are listed as cousins. James Kilgore married Samuel's cousin Jean (dau of John Henderson and Charlotte Miller). William was listed as his father. James could have also had a brother named William. Also, Jean could have have sons named either James or William. I know, I'm not much help, am I? I thought I had a good theory until I saw the list. --Jay Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: hendejb Surnames: Henderson, Sollars, Chapman, Crawford Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.tennessee.counties.greene/3551.2.1.1.1.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Well, here's my theory (keep in mind that it's a theory and would need to be proven by finding some actual records to support it): Mary Henderson is the sister of James, (and John, Samuel, and Ellen, apparently). (Their father is rumored to be named Samuel, but I have no proof) She marries a "chap" named Chapman (whom Samuel, son of James, refers to as "Uncle") and has two children (James and Sophia). This Chapman "chap" dies, leaving Mary Chapman and her two children. In 1784, Mary Chapman marries Thomas Crawford. Baptisms for the dead are done in the maiden names of women so that explains why he baptized Mary Henderson in Nauvoo. The marriage record you found would have used her current surname at the time (Chapman). The "Uncle" Chapman would have been her deceased husband. And his cousins their children. Also note that Samuel was born in 1785, so he would not have known "Uncle" Chapman (who apparently died prior to 1784) -- a good explanation as to why he didn't name him specifically in the baptisms for the dead. An even further note is this: After the baptisms for the dead, Samuel would have desired to have that whole family "sealed" together in the temple. He apparently knew the names of his Aunt and cousins, but did not know the first name of her first husband. Therefore, he would have used what name he could to perform that sealing. Question: do you have any indication of children of Thomas Crawford and his wife Mary? Another question: do you have a list of those deceased for whom Samuel performed baptisms in Nauvoo? That might help shed more light on connections. By the way, I agree that John (died 1824) is most likely the brother of James. It appears that John, James, Samuel, and Mary all appeared in the Greene County area around the same time (along with Sabert Sollars, brother to James' wife, Hannah). I just wish I could figure out where they came from. So, I guess to prove my theory, a marriage record for Mary Henderson and "Uncle" Chapman would have to be found. And possibly birth records for James and Sophia Chapman. Or even a death record for "Uncle" Chapman. Samuel Henderson was listed as a nephew of a Mary Henderson when he "baptized" his dead in Nauvoo, IL. Mary Henderson could have been a desceased sister of James who died young or she could have been a sister-in-law of James-we don't know. She didn't apparently marry Thomas Crawford. He also baptized "Uncle" Chapman who probably was the f/o James & Sophia Chapman whom he listed as cousins. Do you know who Uncle Chapman might be? I actually descend from John Henderson died 1825 Greene Co TN whom I believe may have been the b/o James but this isn't proved. He is the son of James Henderson, who died in 1793. According to family records, James Henderson had a sister named Mary, but I do not have information on who she married. If she had married Thomas Crawford, that would explain why Samuel Henderson would name himself their nephew (Samuel's mother was a Sollars, not a Crawford). My records indicate that Mary was born aroung 1767, but I have no other information about her. --Jay Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
