Hi, Gail - Bill and I had some conversation about this. You have probably seen that by now. I was just trying to get the information with the right Alga. Thanks, Betty B. Date: Tue, 8 Jul 2003 20:37:37 -0500 Dear Betty, I was going to send "comments' first, as I did with the previous transciptions, but since the comments were arriving after the transcriptions I finally decided to send the transcription and then send the comments on Alga's discharge later when I had more time. I am still having some difficulty sending outgoing email. My messages sit in my "outbox" forever and when they finally go, they go in a batch and thus arrive on the list out of sequence. Re Alga's discharge: A couple of nights ago about midnight I was going to email a Roach researcher whose address I happen to have (actually by this time it was more like I KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE ..!!! <grin>) and offer to pop a photocopy of Alga S.'s?? discharge right into the mail so SHE could take a look at this thing!! (I did get one duplicate of this page for Shar, but like I said I can easily send copies to any Roach researcher who wants one.) I am unable to explain the discrepancy in age (depending on how you READ the age in this document (but it is definitely "something" two I THINK twenty???)..maybe the clerk received the wrong information? At first I assumed the soldiers took the discharges to the Courthouse and had them recorded. From the filmstrips of various Grainger County records it is obvious there were days when people took documents to the Courthouse and had them recorded (probably on "court day"). They were apparently charged by the word. However, I now think that these documents were more likely sent to the Courthouse to be registered by the army or the Department of War, or whatever. Why they were entered in the deed books I don't know. Whether or not Henry Sheperd received the correct information this document is not the best example of his handwriting. When he writes the word twenty or thirty it usually is quite clear and distinguishable. Maybe he scribbled this off in a hurry? The end of a long hard day perhaps? As far as the age goes maybe he was distracted and wrote down the age on another discharge? The truth is I was rechecking the document against my transcription and then noticed that I had picked up the discharge of DANIEL L. Roach. Now I would never confuse or combine two transcriptions because I always CAREFULLY check and recheck my transcriptions particularly if they I am sending them to a list or to a message board. A government official whether county, state or federal one hundred and fifty years ago would probably not be as careful or concerned. They would never realize the difference to us many decades later especially if our ancestors weren't rich and famous and the records are few.
