    1. [TNGRAING-L] McCann, Grainger County, 1900 Census?
    2. Ross Cameron
    3. Tracy, No apology necessary. Most queries are about at least two families. The more names you mention the more likely someone will find a connection. I thought that I remembered a previous posting about this family so I searched my email archive and found your message to TNGRAING from almost a year ago which has some additional information so I am reposting it here. <<<<>>>> I am trying to find any one that might have information on the McCann family in Grainger County, Tennessee. My husband's grandfather was John Carl McCann born August 21, 1889. He married Audestia Boatman in MO. They lived in Illinois and some of their 16 children were born there. They supposedly still have family in Grainger County, Tennessee. Some with the last name Beckham. My husband's father was Louis "Mack" McCann. He met his wife, Mary Beatrice Cook in Grainger County while on leave from the Marine Corp. They moved to Corpus Christi, TX. Any information on either side would be greatly appreciated. Please email at [email protected] Thanks, Tracy <<<<>>>> I did not reply last year because I didn't have any connections. For example it was just last month that I extracted the later marriage records which had the McCann connection. I found John Carl McCann in the 1920 Morgan Co., Ill., census which states that he was born in Tennessee. His sister who was 18 was also born in Tennessee, so they should be in the 1900 Grainger Co. census. I have the 1900 Grainger County census microfilm and CD but I do not have an index to it. Perhaps someone who has the published 1900 Grainger Co. census could check the index for McCann. There will probably be only five or so families -- Andrew and/or Mary and their four sons all old enough to have their own families by 1900. It would appear that John Carl is probably the grandson of Andrew and Mary McCann, but I don't know whether his father was Norton (Horton?), George H., John W., or Pleasant W. The 1900 census should resolve this. His sister's name is difficult to read. The bottom loop of the y from Henry from the line above makes it difficult to read. I would guess that the name is Nora or perhaps Norene (?) or something like that. I can't tell whether the name is that long or it is just smudges or stray markings on the film. To follow up on information from the earlier message, I found the following marriage bonds in Grainger Co.: Hattie McCann, 19, and G. Clyde Greenlee, 23, dated 5 Nov 1909. Lillie McCann and Bud Beckham, dated 24 Mar 1899, and they were married 26 Mar 1899 by S. J. Pike, M. G. This would be at least one of the Beckham connections to the McCann family. There could be more. Lillie was likely born after the 1880 census, so I don't know what family she is in, but she could be John Carl's sister or cousin. Martha McCann and George Whitt, dated 20 May 1905. Martha McCann was the second wife of George Whitt. He was likely some relation to her because she was the daughter of Andrew and Mary (Whitt) McCann. Her husband George Samuel Whitt was a relative of my Cameron cousin George T. Whitt (son of Robert Whitt and Sarah Cameron) who married Margaret Handcock in 1892. George Samuel Whitt first married Mary Morgan on 28 Dec. 1876. There are some other McCann marriages to Northern, Brabson, Whitt, Hayes, Greenlee, Lance, Hixon, Williams, Moody, Patterson, Roach, Dodson, and Morgan, which I will send have to send later. Ross Cameron >>> [email protected] 03/26/03 08:03PM >>> Ross and List, I am sorry that I had questions of two families at once. Just thought it would be another email that would not bring a response. I was very excited when there seemed to be an interest. I will try and clarify and also answer questions that have been asked. I will try and do some of that direct. I am not sure if you want the list tied up with all of my questions. I have found my husband's grandfather, John Carl McCann, listed with his wife Emma Audestia Boatman McCann in the 1920 Prentice, IL Census. They were married in 1915 in Hannibal, MO. Two of their children had been born at this time. Also living with them is John Carl's sister. I cannot make out her name. It looks like it starts with an N. She is 18 years old and was also born in TN. I am wondering if anyone would have access to (I believe there was one) the 1910 and 1900 Census? The Cameron connection is supposed to be through the McCann side. John Carl McCann moved his family from Prentice IL to the Corpus Christi, TX area. I do not know if John Carl McCann moved with his parents to IL or if they stayed in Grainger County. I do know that family remained in Grainger County. More to Come! Thank you for your responses, Tracy McCann
