I think that the John C., born Jan 1891 is probably your John Carl which you reported as born in Jan 1889. Later records apparently indicate a birth year of 1889. However, because his parents were not married until 1888 and he had twin older brothers, it seems likely that 1891 is a more likely birth year. It is not unusual for ages to be different between different records for persons born back in that time period and earlier. Many people did not keep as accurate an age record as we do today. Sometimes they may have even changed their age to be older or younger for some purpose and then continued to use that age. Because John Carl's father, George listed his birth as Sept 1859, I decided to check the 1860 census. R., w, f, 10, gr. daughter, single, TN, TN, TN It is possible that the granddaughter's last name is Marshel or Marshal instead of McCan/McCann even though this census record indicates her last name is McCan and first name is Marshel. Perhaps checking some early marriage records would help. Also she should be listed in the 1870 census because she was ten in 1880. McCan, Horton (or Norton), 30, TN, TN, TN Martha, 23, TN, TN, TN James, 4, TN, TN, TN, Mary, 2, TN, TN, TN In the 1880 census above, George is listed as married and head of household with wife Elizabeth J. who is slightly older than he and is age two years younger than the other censuses. The marriage records for Grainger County for 1880 are apparently lost. One book ends in 1879 and the next starts in 1881. So this could be a first marriage for George. I did not find a marriage for him in the book that ends in 1879. It is possible, for example, that this wife Elizabeth died in childbirth with their first child.
