    3. Thank You, Gail. Would you or anyone on this list have any dates on Big John's children? Sheri Gail Roorda <[email protected]> wrote: No Sheri, The Phebes were not one and the same. Big John Had a daughter named Phebe and Liggen had a daughter named Phebe who married James Greenlee. Phebe Mayes Greenlee is supposed to be buried at West Cemetery, I believe. Chances are if we ever get all the Mayses solved we will find out that everyone had a Phebe named after Henry Mayes of Virginia's wife Phebe. I do not know whether the Edward Hodge(s) are one and the same. I think maybe Ross Cameron knows something of the Galyons. Or perhaps Kenneth knows... 3. Dear Sheri Kelly, In a letter to the list dated March 3 You said: "Thank You, Gail. Would you or anyone on this list have any dates on Big John's children?" I was going to reply to this that I know who the children would be, but have no listing as to their ages. <teehee> As I said I do not have that large a database and I consider it primarily a researching tool and it just includes the families I am working on especially if good information exists elsewhere. That is why I just keep referring you to other researcher's websites. <grin> However, inspired by your questions my database is increasing since I am pulling files and entering data. Linking these people up requires a little careful thought and work as anyone who does research in this county will understand (we have all noticed that these people lend a whole new meaning to the term "collateral kin".) Yesterday I accordingly I opened my 1850 census CD and printed off the households of Jane May Mayes, Frederick Mayes (the older Frederick), Marcus Daniel, John Oliver, Edward Hodge (Pheby was of course dead by 1850 and Edward was married to his second wife Orlena). I also printed out the ancestry index entries for "Big" John's children who were living in Trigg County Kentucky so I can look these up (if I ever find the time.) However, I find I have a question for you. Today I decided to look at the Kentucky Vital records index to see if any of Big John's children lived long enough to have a death certificate (I thought it unlikely.) I did not find Thomas or David or Wm Mayes. However, when I did a search on Mays I found a "Fredink Mays". Actually I thought that Frederick s/o Jane May and Big John remained in the Grinager/Hamblen County area and that I had seen him on later censuses. However, "Fredink" is the right age to be Frederick and i wonder if Frederick moved to Trigg County like his half brothers. I am hoping you can enlighten me. Bet everyone is wondering why I am posting this to the list rather than writing to Sheri personally. <smile>Well, since everyone in the county is "connected" I am wondering whether anyone has further information on what became of the Marcus Daniels, John Olivers, Frederick May husband of Big John's daughter Elizabeth and if anyone knows which of the Johns listed on the 1850 Grainger County census is Big John and Nancy's son. BTW I was looking at the infromation on GenForum again, and I noticed that Larry Hodge (I must have seen this before, but it didn't register) believes that Big John was married before he married Nancy. This would, of course, mean that Big John was married three times. Sheri, (or anyone?? <grin>) do you have any further information on this?? Gail

    3. Gail, I appreciate you taking the time to email me. I agree that all correspondence (within reason) should flow through the list because surely there will be one small clue which could help another researcher on a totally different ancestor. Some where I have a small list of families who left Grainger Co., TN and headed to Trigg Co., KY-going through Stewart Co., TN. I have found Mays (all spellings) records in Stewart Co., TN which happens to be just one step from Trigg Co., KY. This list of families were Joyce, Solomon, Meredith, Litchfield, and Flora. They left in a wagon train of 6 wagons from Grainger about 1850. I also went on FamilySearch.net and have found there are several publications from early Mays descendants as well as a Joyce tome which could have some important clues. These books may be available for inter-library loan, but I do not know. I will try to answer some of your questions below. I do not have as much at my fingertips as I do in my mind and so I will answer only those things I know as a fact. As I said above, sometimes there is one little clue which can turn a search into a more productive direction. However, inspired by your questions my database is increasing since I am pulling files and entering data. Linking these people up requires a little careful thought and work as anyone who does research in this county will understand (we have all noticed that these people lend a whole new meaning to the term "collateral kin".) (I am kin to myself I think.) Yesterday I accordingly I opened my 1850 census CD and printed off the households of Jane May Mayes, Frederick Mayes (the older Frederick), Marcus Daniel, John Oliver, Edward Hodge (Pheby was of course dead by 1850 and Edward was married to his second wife Orlena). I also printed out the ancestry index entries for "Big" John's children who were living in Trigg County Kentucky so I can look these up (if I ever find the time.) I need to find my papers to see who lived where. However Frederick (son of Big John) did move to, and live in Trigg Co., KY. Of course he would have been a young child were his full siblings. However, I find I have a question for you. Without doing additional research, I can tell you there was also a Frederick May who married Elizabeth, Big John's daughter and they may have remained in Grainger Co., TN or a surround area. Also I believe there was yet another Frederick May in the area, perhaps a son of Peter May. I have not followed up on either one of these. Actually I though perhaps Peter could be a sibling of Big John and this would make Elizabeth the first cousin of said Frederick. First cousins married often as you know. Small gene pool. However, "Fredink" is the right age to be Frederick and i wonder if Frederick moved to Trigg County like his half brothers. I am hoping you can enlighten me. Bet everyone is wondering why I am posting this to the list rather than writing to Sheri personally. This would, of course, mean that Big John was married three times. Sheri, (or anyone?? ) do you have any further information on this?? I agree with Larry and think that at least William was the son of an earlier marriage of Big John. The gentleman I correspond with thought that Elizabeth may be from another marriage as well, but having no dates of birth or death on the majority of the kids (Greenberry b c 1825, David b c 1826, Samuel b c 1838, Thomas b before 05/01/1849 & died 1852, {I just realized the this young Thomas was most probably a son of Big John and Jane based only on the mention of him being a minor heir in 1849. All the others with the exception of William and Samuel, are married by Big John's death.} Big John married Jane May in 1840.) then Mary b c 1842, Rhoda b c 1845, Frederick b c 1847 & d 1926, and Amanda b c 1849 is all I have.) I have read where an Alexander McConnel received money for part of the share for William Mayes, one of the heirs of Big John, and who was the Lafferty guy who also received money on behalf of William Mayes? Also regarding the Levi Satterfield who was 'minding' the eleven slaves in the estate inventory of Nancy Mayes, he was born about 1787 and his spouse was Martha Mayes, daughter of Elizabeth Mayes (Sherrod) and John McCarty. I do not know the connection but Levi was a witness to Mary Edwards will and had some dealings with the selling some property directly by Mary Edward's property to Balsar Shirley. Thomas Dyer, Noah Jarnagin, and Marvel Weekly were also mentioned in the deed document. It seems that a daughter of Sterling Mayes and a daughter of Johnson Mayes married Edwards men. I do not know if there is any connection to Mary Edwards. I also have found a cemetery record for a William Mayes, born 10/31/1776 and died or buried 11/18/1861 in Sumner Co., TN. Thomas Mayes was born about 1774, as was Big John. Surely somewhere there is a link or clue to the relationship of the VA Mayes who ended up in TN. I also researched Jordans for quite sometime and they've done the same thing, from VA to TN to KY, or as will everyone else, one branch always seemed to pass through NC on their way to GA and AL. My Coffey lines are NC to TN and then some branched off to KY. Plenty to research. If anyone has any help to offer or suggestions to make, please do. Sheri P.
