    1. [TNGRAING-L] Civil War Prisons (Point Lookout)
    2. Gail Roorda
    3. Dear Fellow researchers, Obviously it has been several "tomorrows" since I sent any more information about Civil War prisons. I have found a lot of sites, but I don't seem to have time to write up the information and send it to the list. Today's prison is Point Lookout. Point Lookout is online at: http://www.clements.umich.edu/Webguides/Schoff/NP/Point.html At the bottom of the page is a list of records you can search at this site. I could find no list of those who died at Point Lookout at this site, but since I last wrote to the list I did finally remember where I saw the Point Lookout Cemetery information. (I apparently did not bookmark the site.) Interment.net http://www.interment.net/Default.htm The Point Lookout burials are at the following URL, but you may just find it easier to go to the home page listed above and search on Point Lookout. The URL below may not work. (You could try copying and pasting.) http://www.interment.net/data/query_select.idq?CiRestriction=Point+Lookout&s elect=%2Fus%2Fmd&SUBMIT=Search&CiScope=%2F&CiMaxRecordsPerPage=30&TemplateNa me=query_select&CiSort=rank%5Bd%5D&HTMLQueryForm=search.htm However, yesterday when I was rechecking my bookmarks in hopes of finally sending this information on to the list, I did find another list of those who died at Point Lookout. http://www.members.tripod.com/~PLPOW/plpow.htm Warning there is some controversial material at this website. This list is part of the Point Lookout Descendents organizations site and not unnaturally reflects the point of view of the members of this organization or at least those whoi have constructed the site. I wasn't sure whether to send this URL on or not.. I am getting really hesitant about posting some information to lists I am on for fear of restarting the Civil War all over again. I am hoping this won't generate some sort of "flame" over whether Point Lookout WAS worse than Andersonville or whether or where it is appropriate to fly the Confederate flag, etc. We have all seen a lot of this kind of thing on Tennessee lists in the last several years. As I said this site definitely reflects a point of view which may be a little exteme for some folks, BUT there is a good deal of interesting material here: http://www.members.tripod.com/~PLPOW/plpow.htm As I said the only soldier in my database who died at Point Lookout was Marmaduke "Duke" Mayes. According to information at interment.net and this site M.D. Mays served in the 61Tennessee, Company G. Since men tended to "jine" up together I returned to the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System website: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/ selected regiments and did a search on this regiment and came up with the roster for the 61st Regiment, Tennessee Mounted Infantry (Pitts') (81st Infantry). I considered scrolling through this list to see if I could could find any familiar Grainger County names. <grin> However, there are 1921 names on this roster. So I went back to soldiers and did a search on M. D. Mayes, and printed out this information, but if you are looking for a Grainger County soldier this might be a good roster to check. I did notice that the first page listed a whole "slew" of Acuffs, and I wondered whether any of these soldiers were Jeff/Grainger County Acuffs, but I am not (at least as far as I know) connected to the Acuffs so I couldn't tell, but I think Bill has Acuffs and maybe some of the rest of you do, too. Well, it is getting very late here, and I am struggling to stay awake so goodnight to you all and "happy hunting". Gail in MO
