Tracy, I have a lot of information on Camerons in Grainger County beginning with my 3-greats grandparents, Absalom Cameron and Elizabeth "Betsey" Gallion (a/k/a Galyon) who were married there in 1812. Most if not all of the Camerons in Grainger County are descended from them. I am now trying to identify and link all of the Camerons and their relatives who appear in Grainger County censuses 1830-1930, Grainger County marriage records 1796-1926, Grainger County tombstone inscriptions, and Grainger County death certificates 1914-1946, obituaries, etc. as well as some neighboring counties. I do have the following marriage record: Cameron, Willie, age 19, to McCann(?), Cora, age 22, on 3 Oct 1917 Cora's surname is given as McCannm in the transcription that I have. I have not seen the actual marriage record to check the name. I believe that this is the same as the following couple in the 1920 Grainger Co., TN, census, 7th Civil District, E.D. 67, sheet 3B, lines 68-70, dwelling 56, family 58: Cameron, William J., head, m, w, 19, mar., Tenn, Tenn, Tenn Cora J., wife, f, w, 24, mar., Tenn, Tenn, Tenn William J., Jr., son, m, w, 1 ?/12, Tenn, Tenn, Tenn It also appears that this could be the following couple buried at Central Point Cemetery: Cameron, John W., 29 Apr 1900 - 18 Aug 1963 ssw/ Cora C. Cameron, Cora C., 3 Sep 1897 - [blank] ssw/ John W. Many times first and middle names are switched between various records like census, marriage, and tombstone records, so that William J., and John W. could be the same person. The ages are very close. Cora's middle initial is also not a match. However, this is all still speculation at this point because I don't have confirming evidence to positively link these records. There also appears to be a link between the McCann family and the Whitt family; some of the Whitts married Camerons. I also have the following connection between Cameron and McCann through Greenlee. Joseph Alexander Cameron born 16 Mar 1905 died 29 Mar 1984 mar., 1st, Novella Mae Greenlee daughter of Gilbert Clyde "Buttermilk" Greenlee and Hattie McCann born 2 Nov 1910 died 27 Jul 1941 Novella mar., 2nd, Everett Hubbard I have more information on the Cameron family above, but not on the Greenlee and McCann families mentioned. Some in this branch of Camerons also lived in Jefferson County. Do you have a date of birth for John Carl McCann? I am not sure which "he" you are saying was born in Illinois. Was this John Carl McCann? Or was he born in Grainger Co.? In the 1920 Grainger Co Census there are three McCann families/persons indexed: Norton (or Horton) McCann, age 69, born Tenn. ED 55, p. 13B, and his wife, Martha, and their son, James, 43, and his wife and children living in the same household as Norton/Horton [They are living next to the families of Perry and Walter Cameron.] Mary McCann, age 91, b. Tenn., living with her son-in-law and daughter, George Whitt, 63, and wife Marthy. There are also 3 McCann families in the 1880 Grainger Co Census including some of the above families: McCan, Andrew, 58, VA, VA, VA Mary J., 52, VA, VA, VA [probably the Mary, 91, in the 1920 Whitt household] John W., 16, TN, VA, VA Pleasant W., 14, TN, VA, VA Harriett L., 12, TN, VA, VA Marshel R. R., [granddau.], 10, TN, TN, TN McCan, Horton (or Norton), 30, TN, TN, TN Martha, 23, TN, TN, TN James, 4, TN, TN, TN, Mary, 2, TN, TN, TN McCan, George H., 18, TN, VA, VA Eliza J., 22, TN, TN, TN Do you know when and where John Carl McCann died? If so, you could get his death certificate and it might give his parents' names. I will see what else that I can find on these possible connections. I can also provide more information on the Cameron lines. Do any of the above names seem familiar? Ross Cameron >>> [email protected] 03/25/03 10:30AM >>> I am looking for information on my husband's family. His father was Lonas/Louis "Mack" McCann. He was the son of John Carl and Audestia Boatman McCann. He was born in Illinois and raised in Corpus Christi, TX. But, his family was supposed to have come from Grainger County. He is supposed to have been related to the Cameron and Beckham (sp) families. Someone living in the Rutledge or Bean Station area sent him newspaper clippings of his children in the sixties and seventies as they were growing up in Grainger Co. I am also looking for information on my husband's mother and family. She was supposed to have been born in Grainger County in 1930. They lived in West Virginia prior to that. Her name was Mary Beatrice Cook. She was the daughter of Robert Scott Cook and Della Beatrice Huffman/Hoffman who later married Orbin Anders. I have found the Cook's listed in the 1930 Grainger County Census. Mary Beatrice died in TX in 1963 and was brought back to Grainger County. They are all buried at Helton Springs in Rutledge, TN. Any information (now matter how small) would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Tracy McCann ==== TNGRAING Mailing List ==== To UNSUBSCRIBE please send your message to [email protected]
