Dedar Sheri, Big John Mayes was the father of these children. <grin> Henry's Nancy was "Big John"'s first wife." <grin> Please reread my correspondence. (I hope I don't sound sharp because I am smiling :) :) I never know how I am coming acrross in my email messages and I do not mean to sound cross or abrupt. (like I said I am a slow typist so I tend to "offend" people by my brevity). I do know that these people can be very confusing. I really have not followed up on Big John and Nancy's children. I believe some of them had left Grainger County. This would be according to either documents connected with the slave case or with documents connected with Big John's estate settlement. (I don't have this information in front of me right now.) You should recheck Larry Hodge's transcriptions of "Big" John's estate settlement at Selena's website. I can check my 1850 census CD sometime because I have meant to see if I can do some follow up work on Big John's and Nancy's children. Also now that I have a census subscription I should be able to track some of them down. One of the children, Greenbery I believe was mentally handicapped or as they put it in those days an "idiot" so he would be most likely living with Big John's 2nd wife Nancy May Mayes or somebody else. I will look at the 1850 census and see what I can figure out. I also have them as children of Nancy, daughter of Henry (thanks to Gail). If this is true, I need to know, and I really would like to know who the father was of these children, if they are sibs. If not sibs, I need help with who they should be assigned to. > Thanks for any help or suggestions. > > > Gail Roorda <[email protected]> wrote:Dear Shar, > > I can try to find Phebe. Gail, all is ok. What I now need help on is this Big John's approximate birth date as well as any children born to the John & Nancy marriage. I have corrected my data to read Nancy as a daughter of Henry already. Yes, the children attributed to John and Nancy, most did leave Grainger Co., as a 6 to 8 wagon train with several neighbors. I have names the neighbors names somewhere as well as the approximate date. This group passed through Stewart Co., TN and onto Trigg Co., KY, where descendents live today. I have noted that very little information has been seen on Big John Mayse. At this point I do not know who his father, mother, sibs were but if the birthday someone provides me is what I think it to be, then he's a Virginia born Mayes. Any help appreciated by anyone on this list. Also I must tell the list how much I appreciate their help and input to this Mayes research for me. This is not my ancestor, I am helping another do this research because he does not have a computer and lives in Missouri. We correspond by snail mail at this point. I hope to be able to provide him and his family an as correct as I can get it, family. I also will be sending all printed out emails and other documents to him for his use in continuing his research.
