Dear Shar, I can try to find Phebe. However, the 1870 Grainger County census is about the worst census that ever was. Years ago when I first started researching I was trying to read it on my neighbor's microfilm reader and I kept running into where she was calmly working on some of her genaealogical projects yelling, "I can't BELEVE this census!" In the end I only extracted my immediate ancestors and very close collateral kin. I have begun going through this census again (very sloooowly) My genealogical society in St. Joe has a copy of the 1870 Grainger census and one day I decided to try to read it on the society's really great reader/printer and found out I can read it when usiing this machine.. However it has been months since I have been able to get to St. Joe! I am really hoping to go soon so I can order in film at the FHC and get a copy of this Edwad Mayes heirs document. One can't expect Ancestry.com censuses to be better than the original microfilm especially since they are scanned images, but I will try to find Phebe in the next couple of days. Apparently Ancestry was experiencing some trouble this weekend, but I didn't try the site so I wouldn't know. (Unless Tina comes through in the meantime <smile>. I am sure we all really appreciate your help, Tina!) Maybe the census for that section of the county is better. Most of my folks lived in that part of Grainger County which became Hamblen County in 1870. However, I think Edward and your Roaches and all those folks lived in what is PRESENT day Grainger County. Bye for Now, Gail in MO
Yes, and they are probably in the 5th dist. but that film has alot of Initials instead of names...as I remember... I have a problem with my eyes and can't stare at those films for any length of time, like I used too... To the List, and to Gail: I need to know if anyone can provide me with the parents and any dates of: David Mayes 1826-?, Thomas Mayes, Mahala Mayes (married John Oliver), Nancy Mayes (married John Joice), Greenberry Mayes, Pheby Mayes (married Edward Hodges), Martha Mayes (married Marcus Daniel), Elizabeth Mayes, and John Jr. Mayes, and William Mayes 1801-?. At this current time I have all the above as siblings. I also have them as children of Nancy, daughter of Henry (thanks to Gail). If this is true, I need to know, and I really would like to know who the father was of these children, if they are sibs. If not sibs, I need help with who they should be assigned to. Thanks for any help or suggestions. Gail Roorda <[email protected]> wrote:Dear Shar, I can try to find Phebe. However, the 1870 Grainger County census is about the worst census that ever was.
