Gail: Thank you for getting back to me on these many questions. I simply never realized how involved this Mayes thing would be, but I also am finding information on my own lines while trying to help others. The worst part is that I cannot have dedicated research time. I have printed out your email and will make additions and corrections to my data concerning your family. I came very close to making a major error in my family linkings (the Mayes) when I assigned the wrong father to Nancy. If you hadn't mentioned Henry was the Jane's father, not Sherrod, who knows what terribly mixed up things I would have done. Thanks for that. BTW, I had started my Collins research in 1998 when I happened to try to help another on the Coffey lines. Then somehow the Coffeys took over until I had a 2001 reunion whereas I was appointed the McCool family historian. At that time I dropped all other research and dedicated 1 full year at about 20 hours a week doing McCools. So by reunion 2002 I had a nice piece of work which cost me $52 each to print out to donate to the 4 oldest of each family represented there. I then began back on the Coffeys and chose to research any Jordan (any spelling) line to all Coffeys to try to determine who Caswell Coffey's wi! ves were and who could be the possible mother of my 3rd ggf, Thomas Nelson Coffey. I became so overwhelmed with grabbing bits and pieces of crumbs of Tennessee Jordans that I was glad to take a break and try to help Tom Mays. Tom's ancestor was Frederick Mays who married Martha Cassandra Jordan. Martha Cassandra was a daughter of Tilman Jordan. Must go. I will be posting questions to the list for the most part in hopes it will continue to trigger questions and queries and corrections for the Mayes researchers. I also keep watch for all my connections. Thanks again, Sheri --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Tax Center - forms, calculators, tips, and more
Dear Sheri, I really enjoyed reading your letter about your own research. I always love hearing what other researchers are doing! HOWEVER please RECHECK the message I sent to the list last evening. In your reply to this message you said: "..assigned the wrong father to Nancy. If you hadn't mentioned Henry was the Jane's father, not Sherrod, who knows what terribly mixed up things I would have done.." I said Henry IVEY (IVY) was Jane MAYES IVY's FATHER-IN-LAW <smile> and that Jane HOWELL IVY was Jane MAYES IVY's MOTHER-IN-LAW (<smile>don't mean to "shout" just trying to get the point across.) which could have caused your Frederick MAYES descendent's confusion regarding DODs (I KNOW all the Jane's, Henrys and Nancys are terribly confusing. <smile>) My third great grandmother, Jane MAYES IVY, WAS Shrerrod MAYES and Elizabeth SMITH MAYES's daughter. Jane MAYES IVY was born in 1792 and died sometime after 1870 most likely in Hamblen County, Tennessee. Her husband, Benjamin IVY, died in 1853 in Grainger County. Benjamin was the son of Henry IVY or IVEY (1754-16 July 1836) and his wife, Jane HOWELL (1759-circa July 1848). Bye for Now, Gail
Gail: Thank you for the clairification on the Jane Mayes. I appeared to have everyone in order and printed out your email to re-verify. Now, another query: Jane Howell Ivey is in no way related to the Jane Howell who married James Mayes, then Reuben Groves, Jr, or at least that's what I have determined. The surname Howell happens to be merely coincidential, right? Sheri Gail Roorda <[email protected]> wrote:Dear Sheri, I really enjoyed reading your letter about your own research. Dear Sheri You said, "Jane Howell Ivey is in no way related to the Jane Howell who married James Mayes, then Reuben Groves, Jr, or at least that's what I have determined. The surname Howell happens to be merely coincidential, right?" No concidence here Sherry. Jane "Jincey" "Jenny" Howell Mayes Grove was my 4th great grandmother Jane Howell Ivey's niece. Jane Howell Mayes Grove was the daughter of my Jane Ivey's brother, Henry Howell and his wife Jane O. Collins. (Some sources: Henry Howell's Revolutionary pension file #795. In a deposition dated Feby 1848 shortly before Jane Ivy's death, Jane Ivy stated that Henry Howell was her brother (actually Henry's pension file is Jane O. Collins Howell's application for a pension, Henry Howell died in 1819.) Also Jane Ivy stated that Henry Howell had served two tours with her husband (Henry Ivey or Ivy). Jane O. Howell left a nocuperative will in 1849?? in Grainger County mentioning her daughters Jane now Jane Grove and Prudence Carmichael. I don't think Jane Grove or Jane Mayes as she would have been then was mentioned in her brother Thomas K. Howells earlier will. He "remembered" Prudence Carmichael and Prudy's children and some of the Countses. James Mays and Jane his wife are mentioned as heirs of Henry Howell, dec'd in land records after Henry died.. I am working from memory here since I don't have time to dig all the "stuff"out right now. It is getting very late here and I need to get up very early so bye for Now, Gail
