Dear Shar, How are you related to Edward MAYES? I was contacted by a nice gentleman on this list who it turns out is descended from Edward MAYES and Nanie GREENLEE and have been working on Edward's family this week. Edward was Liggen and Esther (Easter sp, in her father's will) DANIEL MAYES's son. If the gentleman who contacted me is reading this message I should explain what is delaying the rest of my information. <smile> Edward's wife was Nancy "Nanie" GREENLEE and she was the daughter of John GREENLEE, Sr. and Elizabeth SUNDERLAND. The children of this marriage are known and I located some interesting information about them on the internet as well as checking marriage and census records etc., offline. What occured to me as I was researching the Liggen MAYES/John GREENLEE, Sr. family connection is that the only known children (at least as far as I know and I would appreciate some further information if anyone else knows more) of Liggen and Esther DANIEL MAYES are those who intermarried with the GREENLEE family. I started thinking about this, and over the years I have been researching the only researchers I know of who are descended from Esther and Liggen would be descended from the children who intermarried with the Greenlees. Some years ago when I was looking into whether I was descended from Liggen and Esther I remember looking for information on Senator Robert LaFollette on the internet because he was a direct descendent of Liggen Mayes. This is a little fuzzy to me now and I can't remember exactly HOW the senator was descended from Liggen and Esther, but I think that was through the Greenlee's too. The early Grainger County censuses indicate that Esther and Liggen would have had more children than those who married the Grenlees. The information that I have is that Esther and Liggen moved to Claiborne County and probably died there. Does anyone know anything about this? I had never really thought about this and frankly think of the Claiborne County Mayses as mostly being descended from my third great grandmother Jane MAYES IVY's brother Thomas (son of Sherrod). This really adds another dimension to Mayes family research and I wonder whether some of the Claiborne County Mayeses who I can't figure out are descended from Esther and Liggen rather than Thomas. Anyway food for thought. Does anyone know anything about a will or settlement for Liggen? The Mays and Mayes entries I copied from Byron Sistler's Index to Early East Tennessee Wills and Administrations don't have a listing for Liggen or Esther. Gail, My husband in not related to MAYES (unless that one has slipped by ;^) He is related to the ROACH and OWENS that married into the MAYES Family Hamilton ROACH (bro of Our John ROACH Jr.)md Julia Caroline MAYES... also the Robert OWENS + Nancy MAYES Owens listed in Edward's Estate...was the bro of Clarka OWENS who md: John ROACH Jr.( GG-Grandparents of my husband) they are all buried in Greene Co. MO except Hamilton ROACH & Julia C. MAYES-ROACH who stayed and died in Grainger I have a picture of Robert OWENS and Nancy MAYES what I didn't realize before was that Nancy and Julia C. were sisters and both children of Edward, I assume ?? Is this correct ? Dear Shar, You said ".. also the Robert OWENS + Nancy MAYES Owens listed in Edward's Estate...was the bro of Clarka OWENS who md: John ROACH Jr.( GG-Grandparents of my husband) I do know who Clarka and John were..I noticed them on the 1860 census when I was looking for Hamilton and Julia Caroline. This is all so interesting. I did vaguely know that there were connections between the Mayes and Roach families. Also I have been reading msgs on this list from various Roach researchers over the years <smile> It is nice to talk to one of you and have the opportunity to share some information. You said: "they are all buried in Greene Co. MO except Hamilton ROACH & Julia C. MAYES-ROACH who stayed and died in Grainger.." Do you have DODs for Hamilton and Julia Caroline Roach? Gail

John ROACH Jr....s/o Green ROACH + Margaret MCDANIEL ; John Jr. bro of Hamilton ROACH + Julia Caroline MAYES another bro of Clarka's , Alpheus OWENS Jr. md: Margaret ROACH youngest sister of John Jr....Margaret also child of Green ROACH If you ask me ,Grainger Co. is just ONE big family.. Gail, no... I don't think I do, I don't think anyone does, there are some old unreadable tombstones on the old Green ROACH land...that might be theirs..but could be Green or Margarets also... all I have noted, is they died after 1880 census...and I don't think they were still around in 1900 census, but not sure about that. If I find anything I'll let ya 'll know SharR <<< Do you have DODs for Hamilton and Julia Caroline Roach?>>>
