Good Evening, List: Would anyone be able to tell me who they believe Big John Mayse parents were? He was born c 1774 and died c 1848. I would also be interested in knowing his first wife's name. I have found a Nancy Mayes of Henry Co., VA but have not confirmed that. I also have a Jane May as the second spouse. However, other records found indicate a 'Dolly' was his spouse. I do not know who big John's parents were. However, his first wife Nancy Mayes was Sherrod's daughter which explains the involvement of John and Nancy's son-in-law John Oliver in the Mayes slave case. Big John's second wife was Jane May (really confusing huh?). I know of no Dolly. Big John did have a daughter by his second marriage listed in the records as Polly (quite likely Mary since Polly was a nickname for Mary.) John Mayes (Big John) married Nancy Mayes (d/o Sherrod and Elizabeth Smith Mayes) about 11 January 1805. I say about since this was when the bond was issued (no return). Big John married Jane May 20 October 1840 in Grainger County. It is possible you did not see my response on the list. Or maybe you didn't get it. Good Mardi Gras Morning List: Yes, I am in Louisiana and Mardi Gras has kicked off it's final day of celebrating before Ash Wednesday, which begins the Lenten season. It is dreary and drizzly here but after watching the early morning news, the tourists and locals are out in full force in the CBD (Central Business District) of New Orleans, awaiting the oldest and most revered of parades, Rex and Zulu. I am 45 minutes away and am content to read the newspapers or watch the reports on tv. I have received information on the children of Goodwin/Gooding and on Dudly. I wanted to post exactly as I have it on paper, the children's names and information and hope to have some of the confusion cleared up. Although I am doing this for another I want to get as much known correct information before continuing to finish out the work. The spouses listed will be next to the person in brackets. I have: Goodwin or Gooding Mayes 1784-1860 VA married Elizabeth Caruthers/Corruthers 1787-1809, no children noted, married Celia Mitchell ?-1835, no children noted, married Caty/Cathy Kinnon 1792-?, children noted: Edward Mayes ?-1863, Sytha Caroline Mayes (McCarty) ?-?, Anna Mayes ?-? (David Burnett), Jane Mayes 1808-1880 (Joshua Kidwell), Green Berry Mayes 1810-1887. Then it appears Goodwin or Gooding married a Catherine Vineyard, no children noted. Now I have Dudly Mayes 1786-1844, married Elizabeth Daniels and their children listed are: Mary Jane 'Jennie' Mayes 1808-1880 (Joshua Albert Kidwell, Sr.), Green Berry Mayes 1810-1887 (Nancy Ivey, Elizabeth Line), Edward Mayes 1812-1863 (Mahala Jane Jones), Scytha Carolins Mayes 1815-1844 (James F. McCarty), Anna Mayes 1818-1844 (David Burnet), William Mayes 1821-1844, (Winafer Kirk). If anyone can clear up some of the confusion above, please contact me when possible. I understand that there are debates stll on-going of who had whom. I want to assign the children to the correct father and the remaining childen will be left as is. I do not need too much additional information on the above people, only correct lineage. Question: Nancy Mayes, daughter of Sherrod/Sherwood (does anyone really know his name?) married first a Ruben Groves and had a son Ruben Groves. This younger Ruben married a Jane Mayes born 1823. Would anyone know who she is from? This is the same Nancy who married John Mayes/Maize/Mayse "Big John" of who's parents I am searching for. Good Evening, List: Questions I have on some Mayes in order to clarify my own thoughts are: A James Mayes married Jane Howell (Thanks Gail). This Jane Howell's parents were Henry Howell and Jane O. Collins. Would anyone know who James Mayes parent(s) were, and does anyone know which line of Collins does Jane O. come from? Has anyone determined Jane Howell's date of birth?
