    3. On 28 October 1762, John sold the 318 acres he bought from James Mitchell in 1741. John Cook of Amelia paid him 200. Ann, wife of John Craddock, relinquished her dower right. The same day, John and Ann bought 120 acres on Flat Creek and Little Creek from William Childrey and his wife, Sarah, for 50. Two days later they bought 130 acres on the upper side of Flat Creek from John Mayes and his wife, Elizabeth. This last purchase became controversial. The land had belonged had to William Mayes Sr., the grandfather of John Mayes. John Mayes knew that his father, William Mayes Jr., had inherited the land and presumed that he would inherit it from his father. Yet at the time of the sale he did not own the land. To avoid controversy, on 29 March 1770, William Mayes Jr. of Halifax County sold the land again to John Craddock for the nominal price of five shillings. Ironically, according to an estate inventory of William Mayes recorded in Amelia County 2 January 1775, John Craddoc! k was the administrator of the estate.Virginians - The Family History of John W.
